It's not exact science why people label whomever "the best"....you said it yourself, it's all a matter of opinion. Some MC's are more deserving of that form of respect than others.....Rakim has earned the right to be considered one of if not the best to touch the mic. I personally think he is.

Nas told the story of Rakim and left it at Rakim and Dre having creative differences and parting ways.
Alot of niggas say Nas is the best (including me even) and dont really take into account that he took the time to make a whole song about Rakim. A tribute song to an MC that aint even dead. And obviously can still check a mic with the best of em.
