Nasir Jones (born September 14, 1973), known simply as Nas, formerly Nasty Nas, is an American rapper.
Son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas is well known for his 1994 debut album Illmatic, which many consider to be one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. This album established Nas as one of hip-hop's most profound lyricists, introducing his signature poetic style. Raised in the notorious Queensbridge housing projects in New York City, he represents a continuation of a hip-hop tradition in Queensbridge that has spanned through early hip-hop, including the Juice Crew, Mobb Deep, and MC Shan.
Following Illmatic with It Was Written, Nas pursued a more mainstream direction, which resulted in wider success but decreased artistic credibility among critics and hip-hop purists. Nas increased commercial success was accompanied by stylistic changes that fostered accusations of giving in to corporate wishes and compromising the style that had enamored his fans. I listen to at least 2 tracks a day from this dude. Nothing can be said negative of his Style, Flow, Lyrics, Swag, so-on and so fourth. But, and I mean but ( wait let me tell ya he is my Fav EmCee of all time) he pulled an unsuspected kinda funny style move signing wit Def Jam. Now dont bash me, just peep; Nas and Jay wanted to be king of NY (in instance they both were) But Jay went at Nas's throat, when his moms was sick in the hospital (Last Real Nigga Alive, God Son) But Im just saying that was kinda funny style how he signed wit a dude who wanted to take him out since way back when.

Listen to shit like "I Gave You Power" or Rewind. Those are some serious tracks. Even 2Pac was influenced by Nas and you can see that on 2Pac's "Me and my girlfriend" you can tell he listened to "I Gave You Power" and then wrote that shit.

Hands down... The best MC that ever did it... Dead or Alive. I luv all of Nas shit, but after I heard "I Gave U Power" back in the 90's. That was it for me. There's not too many MC's out there that have that extreme gift of creativity, lyricism and delivery. Nowadays, if U take sex, drugs, money, dry snitching and violence out of the lyrics, there wouldn't be many artists left. The only problem I have with dude is he let 50 get off without killing him like he did Jay. Some would say that 50 wasn't worth it, he was just trying to start some shit. FUCK DAT!!!
