Snoop Dogg has issued a strong statement regarding the recent events surrounding Don Imus’ comments on the Rutger’s University women’s basketball team, after their loss to Tennessee: “Don’t even think about comparing his lyrics, or any other member of the hiphop community to syndicated radio host and best selling author Don Imus’ recent racially motivated comments.” If you’ve been living underneath a rock for the past week, Imus called members of the team “rough, nappy-headed ho’s,” among other not so appeasing remarks.
We, and the rest of the music industry, are well aware of rap artists and their profound willingness to refer to women as “bitches, ho’s,” and “tricks” but as Snoop Dogg explained in a recent interview, there should not be any comparison to what Imus said. “It’s a completely different scenario. We are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We’re talking about ho’s that’s in the ‘hood that ain’t doing nothin, that’s trying to get a nigga for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them say we in the same league as him.”
Snoop also made it very clear his feelings on the future of Don Imus, and what type of punishment would be most fitting. “Kick him off the air forever,” he said. “Ban him like they did ‘Pacman’ Jones. They kicked him out the NFL for the whole season, but this punk gets to get on the air and call black women ‘nappy-headed ho’s.’ “
Since the incident, Imus has offered public apologies to the women of the Rutger’s basketball team, as well as appeared on Al Sharpton’s radio talk show to make ammends. The efforts now seem to be made in vain, because as of late last night, and after days of deliberation between the executives at MSNBC, Don Imus’ syndicated talk show has been pulled from the airwaves.
However, as recent as this morning, community activists such as Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson have drawn criticism from those

Rev. Patrick Mahoney also made very strong comments towards the rap industry in general, and made it clear that there is no difference between rappers and their lyrics, and the comments made by Imus. “My hope and prayer is that both clergymen are not basing their selective response on the fact that Don Imus is white and most rap artists are African-American. The demeaning and degrading of women must be condemned continually on every level.
