Shots Fired at DJ Unk Concert
With all of the negativity surrounding hiphop today, it just seems when artists and our communities attempt to move in a positive direction, trouble always seems to try to deter it. Unfortunately, violence erupted after a DJ Unk show in Virginia, even though it was an anti-crime concert.According to Richmond VA’s CBS 6 news, DJ Unk performed at Richmond VA’s Landmark Theater last night (May 10), in part because of a request made by Richmond Police Chief Rodney Monroe, who wanted to promote the positive aspects of Hip-Hop onto the younger generation. Although the show started and finished early, police say a gentleman opened fire with a firearm and was quickly arrested. According to Richmond police, no-one was injured during the shooting, and it is believed the suspect was not intent on harming anyone.
Master P Says “No” to Explicit Lyrics
Master P has officially joined the campaign to stop the promotion of explicit and violent lyrics, however Master P will only be censoring himself, as he has now vowed to eliminate all explicit lyrics from his music.
On Wednesday (May 9), Master P issued a letter to the hip-hop industry explaining his intentions to stay clear of explicit lyrics: “Hip Hop artists have been able to use their talents in this industry and make a better life for themselves and their families. Personally, I have profited millions of dollars through explicit rap lyrics. I can honestly say that I was once part of the problem and now it’s time to be part of the solution. I am ready to take a stand by cleaning up my music and follow my son’s footsteps and make a clean rap album. I believe that it is possible to make a street album without explicit lyrics. I am not expecting the entire industry to change over night but this is one positive step towards the growth of Hip Hop.”
In addition to eliminating explicit and violent lyrics from his music, Master P has also teamed up with his son Lil’ Romeo and together have started Take A Stand Records, a label focused on finding hip-hop artists who have abandoned negativity, and in an essence “cleaned up” their lyrics. In his letter, Master P also explained: “Take A Stand Records is about arming our communities with knowledge and putting money and real estate back into our communities. I am collaborating with the NAACP to do my part. Let’s address the problems and negative individuals and not tear down the entire Hip Hop industry. I commend Russell Simmons for stepping up, and it’s time for more of us to take a stand.”
