On some real spit... Why is it when an article is written on hip hop or about it, its by an outside party. Some personal that probaly loves a Flock of Seaguls (80's band reference) and then has to do a hip hop cram session to right an article. Why in the fuck doesnt Talib Kweli or Ras Kass get asked to right an article based on there real experience. This article is so out of context. What dod they do only listen to Young Jeezy and T.I. catalogs?
I say fuck this false bias article
PS. KEEP SUPPORTING REAL HIP HOP~
co-sign frank white..
co-sign wit frank white
Rock and Roll! anyone ever wondered why its called "Rock and Roll" grab some rock and then roll! i mean the name Rolling Stones gives everything away! the beatles took drugs and got publicized so did Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears!
Hip-Hop dont promote Drugs!
Hip-Hop A CLASS shit!
its fuckin ADDICTIVE!
and guess what im addicted!
FUCK A REHAB!
Long Live Hip-HOP!
Yo y do they always attack us (hip hop) instead of other music genres
Heavy Metal b on some kill everybody shit n don't nobody even say anything about it but when we say da same we get in trouble, this is str8 up bullshit
If people want 2 do drugs then dats their choice
They act like people weren't doin drugs b4 hip hop came
GET DA FUCK OUTTA HERE WIT THIS BULLSHIT!!!!!
^^^^They always attack us because hip hop is predominantly black. Shit hasn't change Rock music references drugs n alcohol just as much as hip hop but its a predominantly white genre. Another reason is that we have guys like Lil Wayne who reference it in every song and Pimp C who passed due to an overdose. Not trying to come on some conspiracy shit but we draw the attention to ourselves.
^^^^ I got u, u make good points but r u agreeing wit me or dissin me?
rap an hip-hop are the shitt.. yea they promote drugs but it's those stupid people who actually do dugs jus to do it cuz they jus like gettin high or something.
i agree with frank.. exept that nobody, not even this guy, likes flock of seaguls lol... anyway fo-t please understand what you are saying before you say it. The term rock and roll does not mean grab your rock and roll... it was used by sailors hundreds of years ago. the first time it was used in music it was referring to black gospel music. And the first time it was used in what is now called rock and roll it was still way before the crack rock was invinted.. and saying hip-hop doesnt promote drugs... that is just ignorant.. of course it does, i mean it doesnt bother me, but it does promote it in many songs.. and for datdude you say that they ALWAYS target hip hop and thats not true... in the 60s and 70s when rock was the biggest form of music out, it was constantly scrutinized for referring to drugs.. now hip hop is the biggest form of music out now so its hip hops turn.. it will blow over eventually i think.. the media can only feed off one topic for so long
agreeing
raiseup, i couldn't have put it any better, if there are people denying Hip-hop does not promote drugs and often violence, quit fooling your self. But raiseup made a great point it will blow up eventually, thats not to say it should remain ignored.
This article is just some muckracking, yellow journalism that is just intended to remind all the racists why they should vote for Mcain. and watch Nancy Grace live. what gives Berkeley the right to judge hiphop? looks like theyve been fucking with some moldy "broccli"
straight up, some white kids parent from the suburbs forsure wrote this shit, i hear about chronic, but what rapper would glamorize smokin rocks?.. other than necro, but hes a crackhead any way.
on the real, leave hiphop to the people who relate to it
peacee
that was dumb killa...
^^^^and that was even...nevermind.....
ahh thizz shit whack kuz why dey mention 50 in da 1st place he whack and its true like alot of rappers talk bout it but not all of dem would ever dare touch da drug so lay off da drug talk
I do here what they sayin but u can tell whoever wrote this shit dont know shit bout the streets... It is true tho that basically no rap has a positive message no more... And they dont say cocaine and heroin are nice things but they say they sell it to get nice things which in turn ruins their whole block but its all good as long as they got their Phantom or Bentley... right? Lol... shit is fucked up but thats just how it is now dayz so dont listen if u dont like it... Wish rappers could be more creative tho and stop rappin bout their money and drugs...
Yeah true they do over saturate the rap game with drug dealing talk, but as soon as they stop. You would be saying damn they sold out and they are doing commercial rap. So as my folk TI says in Lifes Ups and Downs w/Jamie Fox "Its a catch 22 either you lose or lose". So it is what it is "Ride on to the Real and Death to the Fakers" Goodie Mobb'94!!! Peace Up
Glad they said RAP music and not HIP-HOP. Real niggas know the difference...."Rappers rap rhymes that are mostly illeagal, MCs spit rhymes to uplift their people".... You tell me who said that then you know that there is a difference.
"(pSmurf954,I'ma Finish That 1 For U Fam)Glad they said RAP music and not HIP-HOP. Real niggas know the difference...."Rappers rap rhymes that are mostly illeagal, MCs spit rhymes to uplift their people".... You tell me who said that then you know that there is a difference."
"peace love unity havin fun,
these are the lyrics of krs one"= Tha Teacha KRS Bruh Nike Remix Wit Nas Ra,And I Think Kanye
so the fuck what
I love that 'White Lines' track.
Grandmaster Flash was Dope.....
WELL U WILL NEVER KNOW UNTIL U TRIED IT....why dont the USA focus on more important things that are affected the world like war in iraq, aids, poverty...they just use shit like this 2 try to cover up wat is really happenin (just like when they tried to ban the word NIGGA....funny shit)
i mean no1 is forcing u listen 2 rap music...its a choice
but for real most rappers who have never had shit 2 do with drugs and rap about it are the problem...if it is real then it is cool and i wont mind listenin 2 it
no1 ever highlights the positive factors of hip-hop...it is alwayz negative shit
americas positivity has decreased, and it's drug use has increased, so what do they expect from the music?
the positivity decreased because of the influence the kids have had and have now with movies,MUSIC,t.v., basically all forms of entertainment the purpose of the article wasnt to bash hip hop its to get you all angry so you will talk about the subject and converse to change
You can't generalize it and say rap is doing it. It has to be judge artist by artist. Some don't glorify that life and have a real message. Maybe instead of wasting time doing an artical like this maybe you should do more stories on the Lupe's or Nas's just to name a couple that actually rap about something.
to tell you they have a point, the creativity and the positivity is gone. you know why for the simple fact that most of these talent having motherfuckers can't do positive without looking corny and wack. that and a majority of the hip-hop audience was onfatuated more with the "real". real constitutes grimey street shit, the actictivities that that transpire in the street or the ugly truth. there's a bunch of ways to describe it, but the fact is we gravitated towards it. this is where coporate america comes into play, instead of expanding and diversifying, they do the lazy shit and follow the trends and the trend for a minute was the street shit. when their job was supposed to be balancing the shit out and keeping positive media out for whoever wants it at the time. the other thing is american parents are just as lazy, as i child you soak all this shit up and you decipher it {sorry if i didn't spell that word right} the parents don't keep their ears to the ground so of course they don't understand half the shit that's being said.
i'm not going to lie i'm listening to a young buck record right now, him talking the usual who he's gonna kill, nut there's room for positive entertaining music and movements.
p.s fuck jimmy iovene, fuck reebok, fuck universal vivendi, fuck them niggas for making that vitamin water,
fuck all them bitches for hoppin on 50's dick for money -they fucked yor kid up they sponsored that shit
it's some other people besides 50 i could blame, but he can take the shots right he's 50
I STAY HATIN
WHAT'S UP
1) yo on the real, drug abuse in lyrics are present in all forms of music; notably in alternative rock music. they just decided to target the rap promoters because they [for short] - would rather see the 'emo' america than the street smart one.
2) drug/alcohol abuse in lyrics have been present for quite some time and when specifically relating to rap, in most cases, have been used as a reflection of corruption in the ghettos of america; not as a way of life.
3) in my humble opinion, drug references in lyrics are the least of our worries here in 2008:
"why can't i kill the man who punched me, but its alright for you to blow up a whole country" - saigon
rap music back in the day was laid back, and they emceed about issues such as, trying to get out of poverty, and staying in school, and hoping they can live another 24, beat boxing, graffiti... now every rapper wants to be scarface and this super gangsta now and it makes you shake your head. don't get me wrong i bump [young jeezy] in the ride every once in a while but he raps about coke like he invented it. There is more to life than cocaine and guap in your pockets
last time i checked the government brought drugs to the us anyways...
dam i jus dnt understand why this bullshit always gotta come up blamin rap for everything thats been goin on since the fuckin 70's
it is true tho that artists talk a lotta drug rap maybe too much but you cant hold hip-hop as a whole accountable thats lame
Always tryin that put a negative spin on hip hop/rap music back in the day the same person that might have warn against drug use was sniffin coke.cocaine use ta be the trendy drug wtf.weed aint got shit on coke. But dat e-pill poppin aint were its at or da syrup shit.
I don't get the problem, the biggest legalization of Drugs movements are outside of hip hop. I hope the anti hip hop people don't take this and run with it, I bet if they did this same study on television or any other medium out there they would get the same results.
It's not the lyrics...it's the person hearing the music...
It's not the musicans fault that some of their fans can't think for themselves...
i hope they had fun reading all them lyrics! they could have done sumthin better wit they time
Nickleback got that hit record talkin about they keep a drug dealer on speedial. This whole article is racist & hypocritical gotta watch them people my people.
yea becuz everybody wants to be a rockstar, just like rap people just dont get the meaning....
Did you know that the only reason Weed is illegal in our Country is because a couple hundred years ago the hemp business was interfering with the paper business
MAN, AZ'S NEW ALBUM IS FIRE, so far!! PERIOD.... "UNDENIABLE"...
I CAN'T WAIT to see what they say about this album! (lol, I've ONLY heard 3 tracks so far 'cause I had to get out my car and come inside to work)
Rap's a nonsugar-coated picture of what the condition of america is. if america tries to censor it, we're just covering our ears and ignoring the problems of today. the truth is ugly, but we need to face reality at some point.
this shit at racist, its the sad truth. the very sad truth why do you think the news is getting funnier every night, these niggas wasnt born that retarded its what the smokin, poppin, sippin, snorting, licking, tooting, drinking, or robbing for.
Yeah, hip hop sucks.
Its at fault for everything.
I bet the taliban was listening to hip-hop before 9/11 and decided to hail allah to the bitter end because of a rap they heard.
BAN HIP-HOP!!!!!!!!!!
ight u wallin with the ban hip-hop.
but the taliban shit was funny lol
Cot damn, I'm sure Country music has led to more divorices and suicides than Hip Hop, R&B and Pop combined. Fuck the Hip Hop Haters, fuck em, fuck em.
Crack Rock is mos def not a status of wealth.
these bill o reilly types want to end hip-hop
they hate to see a nigga get dough
Man when will they stop pointing the finger at Hip-Hop, when there are movies that come out every week, with niggas killing each other, raping women, all kinds of evil shit. This pisses me off, nobody can name a rapper that says get up and go shoot up some herion. Naw niggas may say "get your lazy ass up and slang if you gotta" but ain't nobody telling the youth to use and abuse drugs. When will people realize that this is entertainment. Just like a movie. I've listend to Hip-Hop my whole life and I ain't never wanted to snort crack or even kill a nigga because of rap. I have a degree and work 2 jobs, and listen to rap all day.
Parents raise your kids and don't let rappers and T.V. Stars be your kids teachers. if you teach your child certain things, when he/she hears something that contradicts that, they are gonna use the knowledge that you instilled in them to make a decision. But if they don't have that knowledge than who else are they gonna listen too....
Sorry about the preaching, but those kinda ignorant articles piss me off...
Some rappers do need to step up the creativity though...
We should join together as a whole and agree to ban Lil Wayne in exchange for banning federal tax.
It is wat it is...we livin here..

Man the media is always over playing shyt, people like to base shyt on the outside looking in. If you don't know what your talking about just shut the hell up.
i really hate reading most of these comments, god i love hiphop, but man i hate the fans. most of you guys cant read critically, how you gunna know whats hot? also i dont believe you. how many of you making gwap of drugs. not nickles and dimes bitches. really!? tell me everything in hiphop is a reflectino of whats going on in teh streets? what? lots of it is some made up bullshit and you know that. drug dealers usually go to jail, dont get signed, never drive RR, and most never get rich. same with rappers. get to the library kids
Ice Cube "Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It" is all I have 2 say look it up on Youtube
They just figured this shit out?
fat sacks mean smoking crack?
Just read a magazine that fucked up my day
How you rate music that thugs with nothin relate to it?
I help them see they way through it—not you
Can't step in my pants, can't walk in my shoes
Bet everything you worth; you lose your tie and your shirt
renegade thats my shit right there real talk
Shit not poppin like it should...the execs in the buis are majority white so they are controlling whats on the radio and albums but the rappers get the blame...them rappers dont have pull like they say they do...and like Hov said if you want to take it there eliminate the movies and all entertainment that involves the use of drugs in a glorified way...and they studying lyrics how the fuck you study lyrics you can only listen and relate if not it aint apart of yo culture
oh so the beatles can do a song about LSD way back in the sixties and ppl just smirk giggle and applaud them but when rappers talk drug use they get chewed out!?
anyway, i think the chronic album and mafioso/gangsta rap made it like this lol
Yeah Rock music been glamorizin drugs 40 years before hiphop
YEA BUT RAP MUSIC DONT PUT A GUN TO YO FUCKIN HEAD AND TELL U TO SMOKE THIS AND USE THAT. SELL THIS AND SELL THAT . THIS GUN AND THAT GUN. THEY ALWAYS BLAME RAP MUSIC. BUT THE FACT STILL REMAINS. RAP MUSIC DOES NOT PUT A GUN TI YO HEAD AND MAKE YOU DO A DAMN THING. ITS BOUT TIME WE START BLAMING FOR THESE WEAK MINDED LOW SELF ESTEEM ASS INDIVIDUALS.
Man look a here.. These people gone attack every and anything its JUST MUSIC. Yeah rappers talk about salein' dope.." Go to the south side of Chicago and almost everybody is salein' DOPE" Most rappers rap about shit they seen, done, or no. Sorry are communitys are not that great we can't rap about positive things if we didn't grow up seeing positive things. I grew up around hustlers I never really hustled to the point of a ScarFace, but im the only one in my household that made it out of high school. Im about the only one in my family that don't sale dope and its probly way more familys out there like that. So who are these ppl to say what rap artist should rap about. If artist want to make a entire album about crack., smoking weed, killing kids, thats there free right to do so...if you don't like it, its your free right not to listen,. I love all music. Music is an exspression of one's self ,thoughts, and creativity. Lets band violent movies and video games and pretend that the world is a fucking peach. Then after we band all the bad things lets go kill people in 3rd world country's for oil and force are way of living upon differnt countrys. Then dress it up on CNN and call it freedom.
ok they talk about how rap glamorizes drug use an shit but how come you dont see know rappers on celebrity rehab or some shit like that??????? hmmmmmm but shit anyways there are plenty of good rappers out that dont say shit about drugs and drug use the people who wrote this need to get they shit staight.
and your stupid for that comment cause you have completly missed the point you cant say hip hop ,rap, or whatevr you want to call the shit doesnt promote drug use or violence everyone wants to say that then why is every song either niggas bitches shoot you shoot this get money fuck everyone else that shit has no meaning everyone is rapping about the same shit but if you look at rock music the songs have real meanings and structure not some gay punchline that takes you twice to figure it out real music has hidden meanings and it promote nothing but your imagination not violence i guess you have to look deeper if your ignorant and have trouble understanding simplistics
well here is some simplistics for you...FUCK YOU simple enough??? oh broke ass hatin ass lookin ass nigga
There isnt shit wrong with hiphop and if you want to do drugs then thats your own choice I think its not problem unless you a addict and who the fuck are these hos to say everything is raps fualt nigga listen to that killer emo shit n I dont hear no bitching about that
Marijuana shouldn't be illegal it has no more of a negative effect then alcohol and you can use it for medicinal purposes,
the other drugs it don't matter what be heard in songs people are still gonna know they are there
if you wanna stop drug influence stop movies with drugs in them stop letting publishers publish songs with drugs in them but it wont really matter people will still know they are there and where to get them everything will always be alright until the world ends and when that happens all this stuff won't matter, if your worried about peoples lives and how kids grow up we have a good educational system they know right from wrong just like a murder you what your doing and you know the consiquences so if you choose to do wrong only blame your self and ask for forgiveness, you can't blame where you get it from you gotta realize your to blame choosing to do it. Lil Wayne says fat sack and then a kid gets addicted to cocaine.
Thats similar if you a kid watched the matrix and the next day trys to dodge bullets. These influences give us choices and its our responsibility of ourselves as people to deal with the consiquences from the choice we make.
well there is truth in this article and it really cant be argued that almost every rap song that is aired on the radio or at least 25% of most rap albums have drug references in them. In some cases talking about selling drugs is a way to show that you are credible rap artist and have some "streetness."
