Nas looks to the future, Guru gets busy

by FULLMETAL

TUESDAY MARCH 13, 2007

Even with his latest album “Hip-Hop is dead” still steady on the charts, Hip-Hop legend NAs is already looking to the future.

“I’m looking forward to having a summer or fall release,” Nas told MTV. “But summer, that’s the time of the year I wanna crack it open. I’m having such a good time. Like I said years ago, it’s about having fun now. I’m having such a good time, and with the music, I’ve gotten ahead of myself.

I’m just trying to share that with the people now. Because the way I’ve been feeling after I did [Hip Hop Is Dead], I wanted it to flow a lot freer. I had to get some shit off my chest about hip-hop being dead. I know I was gonna be over niggas’ heads with the title, so I didn’t want to just leave niggas and they couldn’t catch up.

Now I don’t care if they don’t catch up. I don’t care. I’m all the way gone. When I do this next shit, I’m outta here. I’m not holding back on this one.”

He pined on further, adding,

“I did what I had to do…I’m free with it. I’ve got the fame, I’ve had the paper for over a decade. I got the love. A nigga is just flying free and having a bunch of fun. I’m getting my greedy on this year and having a ball. I’m getting my greedy on in a good way, though. I’m having fun. I’m like, ‘Could it get any better?’ In life, you got ups and downs. I’m enjoying the ups.”

The real question is though, would he be done with Hip-Hop is dead so quickly?

“We’re getting ready to shoot the next video now…I got two directors working on two songs. I don’t know which [song] is coming first, so I don’t want to say what’s coming first, but it’s ‘Black Republican’ and ‘Hustlers.’ It’s looking good.

It’s looking larger than life. It feels good. I’m probably going to get another single after the next two. ‘Cause usually I drop two singles and I’m out of your face until the next album.

But I’m getting so many requests to release so many different singles, so I’m gonna try to give this one life before the next one comes out. You gonna probably see a flurry of sh—right before the next album, just so I got it all off on this album.”

In other Hip-Hop news, Dj Solar, and old-school legend Guru (of Gangstarr) are promoting his newest release, “Jazzmatazz Vol. 4” through live venues.

The album, Guru’s latest in the eclectic Jazzmatazz series, was produced by Solar and Guru and features special guest shots from David Sanborn, Bob James,Common, Damian Marley, Bobby Valentino, Vivian Green, Blackalicious, and Kem, among others.

Look for it in stores soon.

Looking forward to the new album and the Black Republican video.I can already see the hate directed at him for the new album, especially if he stick to his Hip Hop is dead message.Putting out an new album so soon after Hip Hop Is Dead is a sure fire way to build off the buzz he has going for him right now, even if it out of character for Nas.

FUCK NAS HE FUCKIN UP HIP HOP.... Sike

I hate the fact that his new single gets hardly any airplay on BET. But that Pop Lock and Drop it shit is prevalent... Fux me up. I'd like to see what he'd do with a video for Who Killed It, actually. The whole storyline n flow of the song is brilliant. But I know that'll never happen.

Yo WhoozThaBoss, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I have no idea why, but Who Killed It is my favorite song on the album, and all my friends hate when I'm walking around yelling, "Look here, see!" Lol. But I would really like to see what he does with that video, if it's ever done.

But as for the airplay on BET...I don't even watch TV for music anymore. I get my fix from mixtapes, my music collection and this site, lol. The shit's all bad man...

What's the name of Nas' next album gon be " I brought Hip Hop back from the Dead"? There was a time when Nas didn't have to use gimmicks to grab people's attention and sell records but that time is long gone.

I luv and respect Nas's music as just as much as the next guy but, like we see so many times (DMX, Methodman, Snoop) he is just another rapper who was a shadow of what he used to be. Who ever said "Hip Hop is Dead" is a classic doesn't know what Nas is truly capable of. If you compare "HID" with previous Nas albums it's no where near a classic especially by Nas' standards.

But he still makes better music than 95% of the industry NOW. That's a damn shame.

Why does callin' his album, Hip Hop Is Dead a gimmick? Define gimmick for me; that is directed @ anybody. Anyhow, you yourself, MJ, HAVE JUST CONFIRMED NAS' POWER. His "ALBUM TITLE" caused HYSTERIA. Say, 50 or Weezy or Jeezy (lol) or Nelly or Jada or anybody else (except Jay) used that album title... IT WOULD HAVE NOT CREATED THE SAME BUZZ... In fact, it'd just be another album title... nobody would've cared. So let's be serious.

And for the record, Hip Hop Is Dead IS a CLASSIC, duke. Stop comparing Nas' albums to HIS old albums and compare them TO THE HISTORY of hip hop and rank it amongst his PEERS, not amongst himself to determine its "CLASSICITY"! (HA, a new word!)

Gimmick= instead of the norm niggas go out of the way to get attention

Ex: Nas saying Hip Hop is Dead, if he truly believes that he's a hypocrite
Ex: Gin making a mixtape (or song i forgot) with the title "Fuck Jay-Z" he proved that you got to do some off the wall shit to get attention now because Jay even said that shit was clever

IS IT JUST ME OR DO NIGGAS TOSS AROUND THE WORD "CLASSIC" TO MUCH NOWADAYS!!!!!!
Matic you honestly think "Hip Hop Is Dead" is on the same level as "All Eyes on Me" "Ready to Die" or even "Reasonable Doubt" (true classics). If you say yes your an idiot. THERE YOU HAPPY I DIDN'T COMPARE HIP HOP ID DEAD TO OTHER NAS ALBUMS.

"Stop comparing Nas' albums to HIS old albums and compare them TO THE HISTORY of hip hop and rank it amongst his PEERS, not amongst himself to determine its "CLASSICITY"! (HA, a new word!)" ----Charismatic 1 hour ago

^^^By you saying that Matic you admitted Nas ain't who he used to be my nigga. Why shouldn't we compare Hip Hop is Dead to other Nas Classics? You scared to admit the results? "HID" can't hold a fucking candle to "Illmatic" "StillMatic" "It Was Written" or "I am".

Here we go! This is the type of mind meeting I enjoy, despite the fact that I was called an idiot; I WILL NOT resort to that same typa strategy. Anyhow, to address your concerns MJ:

A.) Have you ever listened to the reasons why Nas said that hip hop was dead? First of all rappers are ass. The South, as a whole, sucks.. raw eggs; for the MOST PART, they all sound the same and this "snap, bubble gum" ish is for the birds. And, most importantly, he was saying that rappers don't own anything. How many rappers can you name that own their own masters, besides Master P? And maybe Nas...I'm not sure about him. If Bad Boy, Death Row, Murda Inc, Dipset, G-Unit, So So Def (ALL ex's. of BLACK labels) fold, the EMIs, the Sonys, the Universals, and the Warners will still be alive and poppin. Why? Because those labels have hip-hop acts, country acts, r&b acts, jazz acts, neo-soul acts, pop acts and rock acts. MAD demographics.

B.) Maybe some people DO toss around the word classic too much. You've NEVER heard me use it pertaining to an album that wasn't. Duke, look at the albums you're calling classic, for ex. Reasonable Doubt....it wasn't deemed a CLASSIC by ANYONE for YEARS after it dropped. Nobody was even feelin' at first. People ain't go back 2 RD til after Hard Knock Life dropped, really. We had it, but ain't nobody really care about it. Then we went back and listened to it again and said, "Damn". When the Source gave Aquemini 5 mics, I HAD 2 go cop it. I did and to this day I'm not sure if I wanna call it a classic. Maybe it'll hit me someday.

The point is, HHID is a classic because of its impact and its lyrical viciousness...as well as Nas' creativity - it's UNTOUCHED.

C) Again, you must be reading 2 fast 'cause my point went over your head. Compare Hip-Hop Is Dead 2 Nas' old albums if you like! It's clearly not the best. The point is, that's just NAS' catalogue. On a more global scene, it MURDERS 99% of most albums that get dropped by rappers, AND it was BETTER than Kingdom Come, another 1/2way decent album dropped by Jay, but even that was WAY BETTER than all this b.s. that's out right now. This means that no, HHID is NOT better than Illmatic, Stillmatic, It Was Written, (I Am IS A NEAR-CLASSIC) but when you go OUTSIDE of his catalogue, it SMASHES most hip hop albums in the history of rap.

The point is, Nas, in the HISTORY of hip hop, is the MOST SCRUTINIZED artist of all time. He's always going to be compared to his old stuff, to Illmatic and It Was Written. We know this and we accept it. But, I'm sayin' don't use it AGAINST him 2 say that HHID IS NOT a classic duke 'cause it is. It even took me a while to realize it but dunn, if your ALBUM TITLE creates mass hysteria within an ENTIRE REGION of the United States, the ENTIRE SOUTH (do u know how HUMUNGOUS THE SOUTH IS?), then you're makin' tidal waves within the industry and within the community. Nas is a legend and HIP-HOD IS DEAD is VICIOUS. So no, it has NOTHING 2 do with being scared to compare it to his "other" classics, as you admitted, so then this one has to be one to, by YOUR own admonition, correct!?

^^^ I wasn't calling you an idiot fam I said if you think "HHID" is betta than the other classics i named then you're an idiot (which i don't think you are LOL).

1) Nas said it and i remember it clearly because he said it on 100.3 the beat ( Philly Radio Station) that he WASN'T reffering to the south when he said Hip Hop is dead. He said he just wanted to make other rappers (not necessarily southern rappers) step their game up. Cause lets be honest Matic there are a lot of garbage rappers in the East Coast as well * cough Jim Jones * cough Tony Yayo * cough Fat Joe etc....

2)I completely agree with the part where you said "HHID" is betta than everything that's out now. BUT wat does Nas gain with that cause everything that's out is trash. That's like saying Lebron James is betta than any high shcool player now, it's true but wat does he gain with that?? He's in the NBA not high shcool. So there really is nothing to brag about by sayin "HHID" is the best thing out there cause there isn't really anything else that's out.

3) Jay-Z gets scrutinized a whole lot more than Nas does. LETS BE REAL!!! Everybody and they're moms talks about Jay-Z.

1 more thing... If we said that either Illmatic or It Was Written (I go with the 2nd; it's my FAVORITE RAP ALBUM EVER, followed closely by the Score) is Nas' greatest album, and it is a classic, than by your logic

MJ

NO OTHER of his albums can be deemed classic. So if I say that It Was Written is the greatest rap album of all time or that it is Nas' greatest cd, then none of the rest are top notch? You CAN'T use that logic; that's assanine, dog.

Just because It Was Written, Stillmatic, and Illmatic are better than Hip Hop Is Dead (IN OUR HUMBLE OPIONIONS) doesn't take away FROM ITS GREATNESS. It stands on its own in its own era. It's 2006-2007 (HHID).

STILLMATIC stood in its era (01), It Was Written stood in it's era (96), and Illmatic was so far ahead of its time in IT'S era it was crazy (93-94). Y'all gotta feel me!

************************************************************************************
Oh and SPECIAL SHOUTOUTS 2 Musiq Soulchild and Amy Winehouse, who both dropped 2 HOT ALBUMS 2day! Amy is gonna be a legend, I'm tellin' y'all, as long as she doesn't become an alcoholic or get severely hooked on drugs, like she is borderlining right now. I'll tell you, some people have more $ than they know what to do with...

And again, my OFFICIAL defsounds.com DISCLOSURE: AMY WINEHOUSE'S ALBUM "BACK 2 BLACK" IS ALREADY 3X PLATINUM IN THE U.K. AS WE SPEAK... which is way more than many of your fav. artists!

Wow, MJ (by the way, I'm from "Philly" too; Camden, that is) your 2nd point was

EXTRAVAGANT! "BUT wat does Nas gain with that cause everything that's out is trash. That's like saying Lebron James is betta than any high shcool player now, it's true but wat does he gain with that??"

Exquisite point! Nas gains this. He's like the Roy Jones, Jr. of rap. He's SO far advanced over all of his competition that he'll be old and declining 'bout time he finally loses. Hopefully, unlike Roy, Nas'll bow out b4 that happens. I STILL believe in my heart that Roy is one of the greatest boxers EVER, and those losses take NOTHING away from his greatness. I think Roy got bored. The point is, Nas is a man among boys and what does he gain?

If the OTHER rappers step their games up, then it'll MAKE him work harder. Imagine that? Jay, I feel, made him work harder back in '01... He may have outdone HIMSELF on a couple of them Stillmatic tracks. Nas dropped this masterpiece, "Hip-Hop Is Dead", without any real competition... IMAGINE IF HE DID!? So maybe he gains some competition! Maybe he will cause rappers, in the South and everywhere, to be like, "Let me prove to the masses that I'M NOT ass and that I can drop some lyrics and play with my words and make you think and STILL rock a party at the same time."

It's a BIG MAYBE, but hey! Maybe that answers your ? a lil bit MJ...

To Milehigh(1):

A) Amy Winehouse is AN INTERNATIONAL STAR and will be 1 in the U.S. in about a month. You have to have an appreciation for jazz and soul and r&b and Motown to appreciate her stuff. She's 3x Plat in the UK and her album dropped in October (and we're barely in2 March so that's damn near a million units a month WHICH IS VICIOUS) and today in the U.S. She's a 23 year old English jazz soul singer. I like GOOD MUSIC, whether it's rap, r&b, soul, jazz, whatever... A great song is a great song and A GREAT ALBUM IS A GREAT ALBUM. Where do you think all these rappers get THEIR SAMPLES FROM? Read some album credits of the last 10-15 years. Nuff said.

B.)one more thing matic how did nas make jay-z work harder in 01 when blueprint came out before stillmatic"?

Go back and scroll up - SLOW DOWN and read what I wrote... 4get it, I'll copy and paste it 4 u: "If the OTHER rappers step their games up, then it'll MAKE him work harder. Imagine that? Jay, I feel, made him work harder back in '01..."

"Nas dropped this masterpiece, "Hip-Hop Is Dead", without any real competition... IMAGINE IF HE DID!?" ----Charismatic

Matic i don't think Nas looks at the game from a competitive level like so many other rappers. He just does music that he thinks is real. So i don't think he went in to make Stillmatic a betta album than Blueprint he just made music he thought was real. Everybody said "Nastradamus" was where nas fell off. I though "Nastrdamus" was a damn good album. Nas makes albums to satisfy himself not other ppl. He went in to make "HHID" because he thought it was necassary at the time, he didn't make it from a competitive standpoint.

Oh MJ, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I LOVE NASTRADAMUS... If you recall, he did say that it was what he was feelin' @ the time. BUT, I can't listen to it straight through. I just can't. I'll admit, that even I, 1 of Nas' biggest fans, skip over certain tracks. But I feel what you are sayin'.... But, you gotta admit, that Stillmatic was wayyyyyyyy more vicious than Nastradamus and due to Jay & the ROC comin' at him, it made that cd THAT MUCH better because it contained ARGUABLY the GREATEST DISS record of all time on it.... MileHigh(1): "And i just look her up it seems like she go end her own career before she gets to amercia. Amy Winehouse i got some words for you JUST SAY NO."

You see MileHigh(1), we're USUALLY on the same page! Because I already said what you just said and you'd SEE that if you slow down and scroll up sometimes: "Amy is gonna be a legend, I'm tellin' y'all, as long as she doesn't become an alcoholic or get severely hooked on drugs, like she is borderlining right now. I'll tell you, some people have more $ than they know what to do with..."

And I'm sorry if I seem to IMPOSE my positions on people; I'll try 2 come across more tactfully. And, nah, I copped her album this morning and I'm FEELING IT! It's VICIOUSLY VICIOUS! And I copped Musiq's joint. MY POINT: NO HOT HIP-HOP ALBUMS TO COP! HIP-HOP IS SERIOUSLY ON LIFE SUPPORT!

Matic u damn right it aint no hip hop albums coming out until buck the world, and to be honest um the biggest g-unit fan out, but i do think buck the world is going to flopped because i thought rotten apple was about to do the damn thing. but when 50 album come out, thats go be the next big album we all know that, u go see 50cent commercials , videos and him on mtv and bet, matic umight not like 50 but when his album come out he go have like 6 number 1 singles because this a double disc and i dont care what nobody say the man. 50 not that lyrical and he makes great music and cant nobody deny that. And Hip Hop Is Not Dead.

To: MileHigh(1),

50 DOES make good music... SOMETIMES.... for ex., that "Candy Shop" shit was corny as ever.... but you may have missed what's poppin' in this article:

Fullmetal -

**********************************************************************************************************

According to this article, written by Fullmetal, NAS IS DROPPIN' THIS SUMMER 2! Now, this may be the summer of ALL SUMMERS!

I know i'm off topic but:
Matic as far as Roy Jones goes, he got crazy talent, but wat he lacks is what Bernard Hopkins has which is heart. Yes Roy beat B-Hop but that when when B-Hop was just gettin into the game. B-Hop would whoop RJ ass now. Hopkins easily beat the man that pummeled RJ three times (Tarver) and he moved up in weight to do it. If that's not heart and determination i don't what is. But i used to watch every Roy Jones fight back in the day. Real talk RJ was mad entertaining. I seen that chicken chase move live on PPV when he did it to homeboy. It was crazy, a young Roy Jones was definatly a beast though.

WHAT!!!!? MJ u must've smoked somethin' b/t your last post...

A. When Roy beat the shit outta HOP THEY WERE BOTH just gettin' in2 the game...

B. In his prime, Roy would ROCK B.Hop. Did you forget that, after B.Hop EASILY disposed of Tito, Roy offered B.Hop 60-40 on a fight and Bernard declined talkin' bout he deserved 1/2. Eff outta here.

C. Let's not talk about "if they fought now". That's like sayin who would win if Ali and Frazier "fought now". Talk about, their primes, which WE CAN compare cause they were in their PRIMES at the same time and pound-4-pound, how can you honestly believe in your heart that B.Hop would win a rematch? Cows'll be flying when that happens dog. I doubt if anybody could touch Roy in his prime.... Yeah, I know, it's about 2 go down... BUT I LOVE ROY... HE'S MY ERA'S GREATEST!

D. Roy knocked out dudes who were Mike Tyson @ the time (i.e. James Toney knockin' EVERYBODY HE CAME ACROSS) and beat them easy. He knocked out dudes with body shots. I've seen him pound someone's SHOULDER for like 4 rounds str8 til they couldn't move it anymore and had 2 quit. I saw him GO UP FOUR WEIGHTCLASSES, lookin' for better competition, in his prime, AND DOMINATING EACH.... Bernard ain't do that - he stayed in the same weight class, and dominated, for over 12 years. Bernard can't fuck wit' Roy dog... He fucked Tito and Oscar up though, lol!

E. And, Roy was LIGHTNING FAST. Oh my goodness, Roy was sharp! Bernard just has that PHILLY craftiness and is the DIRTIEST fighter I've ever seen! And you know it! And I love it, 'cause Bernard is from North Philly and he's so sneaky with his that he gets away with it! Don't get me wrong dog, I LOVE BERNARD WITH ALL MY HEART but he can't fuck wit' Roy!

okay that candy shop was corny but that was the biggest song in the world, yeah i said world. it was number in every country and i think number 2 in one other country. 50 is the only musican not just rapper ever to have the number 1, 2 ,3 song in the country at the same time.and he did it twice. Now thats specail and and the first time he did it was with In da Club, Pimp, 21 questions the second time he did it, it was with Candy Sho, Just A LiL Bit, And Outta Control.

Nas still got it, if the nigga get back to the basics with DJ Premier, he could have another classic album, it would be easy for him....I think where artists fuck up is their choice of beats and how they approach a track...some artists may think one way, another artist will think totally differently.....with Jay's album, that shit went over alot of people's heads, I aint gonna lie I listened to it maybe twice, after that I wasnt impressed.....Nas has lyrics for niggas, give him the right track, and theres nobody I think can fuck with him lyrically....except for maybe Chubbie Baby outta Dipset, I heard that nigga the 07 Biggie......LOL

True, Nas doesn't make summer bangers, but he does make song that people feel, so he will always have a audience. And whoever said "Hip Hop Is Dead" was a classic, is dead wrong, good but not a classic. And "Hip Hop Is Dead" flopping is a opinion, but out a good album that goes gold isn't a flop to me.

And I'm feeling Amy Winehouse, but she really needs to fix her fuck up hair, she reminds me of the down south/midwest chicks with those bird nest hairdos, that shit disgusting.

Who had a betta career? B-Hop. Plus B-Hop had every rite to get 50/50 on Roy, he just came off a huge victory over Tito. Who was the last "well known" boxer Roy beat around 2001? My point exactly. Except for James Toney and B-Hop wat well known guy has Roy beaten. The complelty garbage John Ruiz at heavy weight????? B-Hop dismantled the best of his generation: Oscar, Tito, Glen johnson, Tarver, jermaine taylor (i don't care wat anybody says B-Hop beat Taylor)>>>biggest screw job in boxing history

B-Hop is the greates boxer of his generation hands down!!!!!!

3rd greatest middle weight ever next to Ray Robinson and Marvelous Marven Hagler.

im not a huge fan of nas i respect him and hes def a legend in the game...Hip Hop Is Dead it thought was a hot ablum and wether hes talking to the south or not hes right hip hop is dead or as other people put it..its on life support...so it will be interesting to see what his next ablum is about cause it so soon... he better not waste his time making a Hip Hop is Dead Part 2 cause that would just be stupid saying the same stuff...but i this summer is def going to be 50's cause in the article nas says hes looking forward to a summer or fall release so he will probably come out in like August or something but you never know

yo MileHigh you cant forget 50 was the last artist since the beatles to have 4 songs in the top 10 of the billboards hot 100

Oh wait, ONE more comment:

Who did Roy beat? What!? Let me lay this PARAGRAPH ON YOU.... --->

Roy Levesta Jones Jr. (born January 16, 1969) is a former Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight boxing champion from Pensacola, Florida. Jones was Ring Magazine's Fighter of the Year in 1994 and was voted the "Fighter of the Decade" in 1999 by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Between 1999 and 2003, Jones was considered by many as the best pound for pound fighter in the world, particularly after his dominant win over Reggie Johnson. Jones had a virtuoso fighting style never seen before and no boxer has reached his fighting level yet. Among his skills, he could throw 10 punches combos in 2 seconds. Top Rank's Bob Arum said in a FOX interview: "Roy Jones jr. is the best fighter or warrior on the planet, no one is even close".

MJ, all I have 2 say is, 2 BRING THIS FULL CIRCLE BACK ON TOPIC: Go listen to the Hip-hop "classic" (just wanted 2 THROW that word around, lol): Y'ALL MUSTA FORGOT!

cause dog, you've CLEARLY 4gotten!
