As reported by Reuters, Sony/ATV Music is in talks with Viacom to acquire their Famous Music Publishing catalogue. The catalogue includes songs from artists like Eminem, Shakira, Busta Rhymes, & Akon as well as movie soundtracks like “The Godfather”. This will add to Sony’s already monstrous catalog, which already owned songs from The Beatles, and legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix.
Speculated to be worth over $370 Million, the deal will also spark Sony’s entrance into the production aspect of the music industry through the Famous Extreme imprint. “This is a milestone event for Sony/ATV Music Publishing,” Michael Jackson said in a statement. “The diverse collection of songs in this catalogue range from timeless classics to contemporary hits, and I am pleased to add the acquisition of Famous Music to Sony/ATV.”
“We’re in the hunt for great artists and people to build the team,” said Sony/ATV Chief Executive Martin Bandier in an interview with Reuters. “This deal announces that we’re in the game. Our strategy is to become one of the more meaningful players in the publishing business,” he added.
