Memphis Bleek Talks New 'Empire'

by reign on October 7th, 2008

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/779/803/10671/asset.jpgRoc-A-Fella artist Memphis Bleek was recently interviewed and talks about how he is flexing his own business skills, outside of what his mentor Jay-Z has done for him. The rapper talks about what he has been doing since his last album was out in '05, titled 534.

“What I’ve been doing now is building my empire, my imprint. My Get Low thing...Roc-A-Fella for life,” Bleek said. “Even though Roc-A-Fella’s in the blood, [Jay] gave me the opportunity to step out and make Get Low Records for my own company—and really get all the proceeds, make all the money from my projects. And I don’t think nobody right now, nobody’s boss would let them do that in the position I’m in and still be on stage with them touring.”

He also spoke about how he didn't want to tail on Jay-Z with his whole Live Nation deal so he could become his own boss.

“The whole thing came about when I spoke to Hov, he’s moving everything off of Def Jam and about to start off his Roc Nation thing,” Bleek continued. “My idea was like, ‘Cool, you leaving Def Jam, let me get the opportunity to experience life on my own, for a minute. Let me branch out. This’ll be the best time for me to step out that shadow.”

ehh i think he could have made something more creative than ‘get low records’ but i wish the best to him
and that was real cool of jay to let him get everything out of it though (not that jay needed the money but still..look at 50 lol)

Yo Bleek is like a kid in school with an unfair advantage. I like him but he is only so-so on the mic and still raps now like he did when he started. Him and Yayo, Murphy Lee (or whatever his name is) have a GREAT opportunity to BLOW up due to their friends but overall all 3 SUCK. They are all 3 pretty lucky that the are even in the rap biz. Shit they don’t ever HAVE to rap again either. I would love to be Jigga’s right hand! (or whichever hand he fingers Beyonce with)! Memph Bleek Is Lucky! PEACE listening to “Expect The Unexpected” by Cassidy & Murder Mook (Yo these two sound GOOD 2gether. Who Knew?) Come check out The Livin’ Large Morning Show Hip-Hop/N.F.L. Special w/ Bobby Livin’, and Tony Large Sundays 11am-1pm EST at www.clubmegamix.com.

You can say what you want about Bleek…my dude plays his position best and knows when to step in and out of Jay shadow. He had his lil hits here and there (thanks to Hov) but he laid back made that cake from touring with Jay and now he’s like lemme see what I can make happen.

Much luck to dude

the guy is cursed. everybody knows that. ever since Jay-Z’s intro “Bleeks gonna be a good rapper… the NEW IMPROVED JAY-Z”. you just don’t say that about anybody. it’s like whenever they compared b-ball players to jordan. Kobe is the only one still here. the rest burnt out early as hell. Even Kobe’s got a WHOLE lot more to do to even be looked at like that… the cursed Bleeks career with one sentence. dude ain’t been felt 100% by me since the understanding.

Man i use to be HUGE Bleek fan when he first came out, until i copped his first album i was like Scooby Doo “ugh”. I was like it’s ok i hope his second one is better, then i was like Homer simpson “DOE”!! Then i just lost faith in him. I hope this does him some justice and he can shine like he wants too but it’s been tooo long he should have been done this A LONG TIME AGO, but i guess the timing wasn’t right. But i am trying to figure out why are you gonna do ur thing now when the economy is doing bad ?Man people are not buying cd;s any more, and we are at the stage of downloading people’s music. Hopefully he comes out with a nice banger to get people to notice him again.

this nigga aint got no business sense…the article doesn’t even tell HOW he’s ‘flexing his own business skills’….all the poor guy has is his own label wit no real artists that i know of…and being totally irrelevant now…show money must have been decent at best- i mean how big of an attraction is bleek nowadays?

…good luck to you buddy but i say get back in jay’s shadow and do it fast.

EXTREMELY HARD FOR ANYBODY IN BLEEK’S POSITION TO STEP UP AND DO THEIR OWN THANG!!!

I mean, if Jay-Z just so happened to be your friend and boss and he lent you a helping hand to ‘put you in the game’ and people were ALWAYS 2nd guessing your skills, saying that you eating off Jigga’s plate and all, then it would be almost IMPOSSIBLE to try and branch out on your own, becoz of the FEAR OF FAILURE!!!

So rap, lyrics, flow, jewelry and all those things aside, I’m gonna give RESPECT to Memphis Bleek, for tryna ‘do him’ and be as independent as he can be, after all these years!!! BECOZ IF YOU WERE IN HIS POSITION, DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT YOU’D BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO GO ON YOUR OWN, AFTER HAVING JIGGA-MANCARRYYOU, FOR ALL THOSE YEARS!!!

Get your $$$$ my nigga and keep that N.Y hustle game on!!!

Respect to all my REAL NIGGAZ out there doing their thang!!!

Good on bleek. He needs to be doing his own thing and too right needs to get out of j’s shadow. Not that much of a fan on memphis music but he’s cool and loyal. Good luck to him and he knows he will always be a millionaire.

Salute!

I liked ‘em on “coming of age” on reasonable doubt in ’96 but he never took off. it’s a good thing jay still shows ’em love othawise they probly woulda beefed already.

I jus don’t seem ’em advancing in the biz
