Master P Is Now P. Miller, Speaks On Growing Up

by REIGN

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 13, 2008

Percy Miller, better known as Master P, has officially changed his name to P. Miller. The hip hop mogul has won 5 Grammys, sold more than 75 million records worldwide, as well as produced and starred in several Hollywood films. In a recent interview, P explains why.

"I'm changing my name because Master P is who I used to be. I call it my childhood and P. Miller marks my manhood. I wouldn't change my past because it's groomed me to be the man I am today. People grow mentally and spiritually through life experiences, but when you come from hip-hop it's almost impossible to move past the stereotypes associated with it. I've branched out into so many different arenas that range from being the first African-American to have a clothing line at Wal-Mart, to writing books, and speaking on Capitol Hill, but all that gets overshadowed because I come from the hip-hop industry. There're a lot of people out there, who are afraid to grow up and change, but I'm not and P. Miller is the evolution of me, Percy Miller the entrepreneur, the business man."

For those that don't know about how successful the man was, during one point in his career he presided over a $661 million-dollar business empire that included No Limit Records, No Limit Films, and was ranked 10th on Forbes magazine's 1998 list of America's 40 highest paid entertainers with an estimated income of $56.5 million.

Since then, P has spoken at congressional hearings and addressed the criticism of hip-hop lyrics. He opened up a label, Take A Stand Records, with his son, Romeo, and made it a "clean" lyric label that would be more oriented for all listeners, particularly kids. In addition to this, P. Miller also has a book "Guaranteed Success" that has been very successful.

As a community activist, Miller's community outreach extends from the bayous of Louisiana to Los Angeles and abroad through "P. Miller Youth Centers" and his "P. Miller Food Foundation" as well as a new speaking program on financial literacy.

gp180 why not compare P. Miller to P. Diddy. They both cant rap, they both cant dance, but at the same time they BLACK succesful business men. The only different between the two is region. But who cares about that. Negros need to get off they own dick and stop hatin.

Man, if you gonna change your name cos you turned into a man, you should have done it when you were like 20 years old, not when you about to die. This man had no talent and made his money off the talented ones like Mystikal, Snoop Dogg, etc. I even prefer Diddy to this dude.

^^^You're an idiot!
Master P ran the late '90s w/ No Limit and provided so many people to eat and accomplish their dream of hip hop.
P is the person who created the [future releases] ads in the CD booklets. This dude's record deal was unheard of at the time... 50% of all sales, ownership of all MASTERS w/ he declined his advancement check! Come on man, respect this dude b/c he is a southern pioneer/legend who is attempting to better the black community.

MC Pedigree -Man, if you gonna change your name cos you turned into a man, you should have done it when you were like 20 years old, not when you about to die.

P.S. - Many of these rappers out here are their 30's & some in 40's... don't play the age card homie.

The only reason I use to bump a No Limit Record was because of the likes of Mystikal, Silkk the Shocker, Souljah Slim and Snoop Dogg. Only thing Master P did any good was making a catchy hook saying "Uhhhhhhhhhhh". Damn Shame.

Man, I didn't know there was alot of touchy Master.P fans around! Did I touch a soft spot? LOL. I never said anything bad about him being street smart and being a shrewd business man, he's talented at that, I'm just making bad remarks about him as a Rapper. Southern Hip Hop has never been my genre, I'm enjoy more of a Westcoast Gangster rap, Eastcoast lyrical content but I gotta say, back in the good old days, I bumped Dirty South cos of Mystikal and Slikk the shocker, they were good in their prime.

@ Mak Woo ...

It's kinda hard to tell if your of age yourself buddy talkin' stupid like that....
I'm gon break it down 4 u ...

1. You are so far off topic with the article and the whole point of my post...

1(a)- how many hits he's had recently, he was stating that coming from hip-hop as an whole one is percieved in an negative light and him shedding his former rap name was just an way of presenting himself in a positive light, with a clean slate per say...

1(b)- Funny how you say I grew up with him on Nick when actually him and No-Limit were quite relevent while i was coming up..althiugh I can't say I fully understood what they represented at that time I most definately listened 2 em' along with the majority of hip-hop america...

2- The fact that you brought my age into the equation with your response for
1- shows how you are not even on my level dude...because it doesn't take to much common sense or to many years under your belt to realize that one's opinion is just that...

so...(only because i wonder why am i justifying your ignorance with a response)..im goin to leave with this...

you justified my whole point on my post when you stated
"You grow up watching Master P on Nick.. We grow up bumpin P rapping about gangsta shit."
thats exactly the image P wants to shed...

btw, being able to have some clothing in Wal-Mart is HUGE, yea most people i know and i'm sure that you know don't by all of their clothes from Wal-Mart but i'm sure you know Wal-Mart is one if not the biggest super store around...billions of people i'm sure shop their...check your local one...i'm sure it's never seen an empty parking lot, i know mine hasent...

learn it!

Damn, alot of ya'll are waving the hateration flags high on this one. What exactly is there to hate on? The man has been focusing on having a positive influence on the community for years now. His record label didn't crumble like alot of you are claiming, he actually explained to his artists that he was going to expand and focus on other ventures and he released them from there contracts so they could go on with there business. He could have been an ass hole and kept them all under contract, knowing that he wasn't going to be focusing on pushing there music. He had a son and watched one of his brothers die and the other one get sent to prison, don't any of you think that that might have had an influence on his decision to change his ways? Sometimes ya'll make me sick with your contradictions. One artist goes to jail and ya'll complain that he's stupid for doing this or doing that since he's got all that money then another artist does something positive and the same ones complain that he's a bitch or he only did it because of this or because of that.. Damn, ya'll open up your minds. Who cares why he did it, isn't it good enough that he's doing it? Damn!

If you think P ain't been in the spotlight since 2000, then you don't watch the news. He may not be making music like that anymore, but like the article says, dude been everywhere. And even if everyone been callin him P. Miller, his rap name was still Master P, just like BIG was callin' Puffy by Diddy WAYYYY before he changed the shit. At the end of the day, you can't say you're changing your image if you don't change the name. I fucks with him makin' the clothing line at Wal-mart, just like Starbury and his shoes, makes it easy for the less fortunate folks to get something trendy. I've already said it, I don't doubt on MASTER P's (as I still Know him as) business talents, I know he's a good business man, that's why he made all that money that he did, I'm just saying he's not a skilled rapper and that the only reason I listened to no limit back in the day was cos of the roster he signed. It's not like rockafella where I respect Jay for his skills on the mic as well as a CEO. Trashing someone's comment just shows that you're touchy and sensitive, everyone has their own opinion and I don't go around trashing other people's comment, that's Gay.

yeah P has had a rollercoaster ride! He was the South's Don in the late 90's. He even took away alot of the shine from ATL. Then Pastor Troy came out and pretty much destroyed him. The everyone either left No Limit or got locked up. At one point everything was gonna dissapear because he owed a sh!t load of money to Priority and the IRS. Then he tried to resurrect his career with more gangsta music independently but it never took off. So, he takes the higher road, drops the gangsta act and focuses on his son's career and cleans up EVERYTHING!... Disney, Nickolodeon, Wal-Mart.... but no matter what in my heart he's always gonna be... The Ice Cream Man!

I was in High school when Master P got hot..I remember when No limit was dropping an album like every month..I think that was smart because he was dropping it while he was hot. how many record labels you know that drop solid album every month like that.. I respect the fact that he changed. everybody need change. especially when you got family..why keep running the street being a thug.. life aint about selling dope, and seeing who the hardest. some of yall to young to see it now

oh yeah by the way maktown pastor troy didnt destroy him...troy was just hating cause P wouldn't sign him and that was just a publicity stunt just to get in the game and get known..how can you destroy somebody that was worth over 400 million during that time. Troy struggle just to sell gold...I like Troy but he still underground and thats where he always going to be...He tried one time with the album universal soilders but that album didnt sell like it supposed to, then he went back underground. so how did Troy destroyed him...Hip Hop just changed and when it did Master P wasn't hot no more

(1) First off loved the format of your comment I can tell 3 period English II is paying off...

(2) You were Born in 1991 how much Master P could you have really listen too? When P was in his prime you was learning you abc and how to piss on your own.

(3) I wasn't hatin on dude at all just telling the truth on the the situation dude has lost all respect in the rap game if you didn't know. Pimp C had major beef wit dude (Listen to the Sweet James album) over paper he didn't pay. How can you make million off rap and selling dope then want to change your name and think everyone will forget the shit you use to do? Change is good don't get me wrong but dont act like rap is killing our people its the people who are hurting us the most and clean lyrics is not the way for change.. Shit has been fucked way before rap music and going to fucked up until WE get right... Seems Aj has too much time on his hands he made like 50 comments on this one topic...lol Go comment on Soulja Boy something you know about and leave this for the grown folks....
