According to the Chicago Sun times, Hip Hop Mogul and Lupe Fiasco Mentor, Charles Patton, has been sentenced to 44 years in prison in a case stemming from a 2003 drug bust in which 6 kilos of heroin, estimated to be have a street value of $1 Million were recovered from a storage locker in his possession.
Though no direct connection between Patton’s drug business and the music label he started with Lupe Fiasco, real name Wasalu Jacobs, was discovered, prosecutors implied Patton used profits from record deals to buy heroin and turned it around for street sales in Chicago.
“There is a large amount of money that he received from the sales of heroin,’’ said Assistant State’s Attorney Patrick Coughlin. “And he was able to start up a record company.’’ Lupe himself is not implicated in the dealings and was never charged, he testified in the case regarding taped suspicious conversations between the two. Some of which referenced “whole yellow and whole red ones”, a slang for dime bags of heroin as confirmed by a witness.
Lupe released a letter to the court, supporting his mentor, saying: “I love Charles . . . I am deeply saddened by his circumstances and will stand by him and his family no matter what occurs.”
