Lauryn Hill Talks New Album, State Of Hip Hop, & Fugees Reunion

by JOKESTA

THURSDAY AUGUST 2, 2007

Former Fugees singer and eight time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill has been making many headlines as of late. From being the alleged cause of a Fugees reunion hold up to offbeat performances, Hill has been under attack by both fans and media alike.

In a recent interview, Hill who’s currently on tour, addressed some of the stories circulating as well as her new album, the state of Hip Hop, and the long awaited Fugees Reunion.

“For me to make music—It doesn’t really make sense to make music if I can’t make something that has a purpose. I could’ve put out music three years ago, if there really wasn’t a purpose attached to it, I don’t know that I would’ve been interested.

I think the reason the Fugees had the impact they did was because we really believed in what we were doing at the time. There was something genuine, something purposeful about it. Same thing with the Miseducation, making music is a labor of love and there also has to be an enormous amount of love in what I’m doing and a purpose.” Said Hill.

Hill, who was rumored to be working on an LP entitled “Call Me Ms. Hill”, confirmed that she will be working on new music once she’s off tour but denied of anything in the works with that title.

“I didn’t put an album together with that title, but I plan on recording in the near future, as soon as I get back. I think there’s a lot of music out right now” She quipped.

“I see a lot of talent and potential, at the same time, I see a lot of lost potential.” She said regarding the current state of Hip Hop.

“We can sort of trace black music back and watch the pattern. See how these [black] folks found this music and how it gets commercialized and compromised. My struggle has always been to prevent that from happening and maintain the soul in everything that I do.” She continued.

“The reason why Hip Hop had such a strong voice was because it was a defiant message for a while. It was the voice of the voiceless…once you become the voice of the corporate, you become a different creature.”

Hill also addressed reports of being blamed for holding up the long awaited Fugees reunion.

“I’m not going to say never…I’m not going to feed anything either. I think the moment we [The Fugees] came together, it was just a beautiful moment…It was special. As far as a reunion, I don’t have the answer.” She stated.

Lmao...

I see where she's coming from though. She's like on the level of the less mainstream artists(the real hip hop artists) meaning she's all for the real, genuine music regardless of what the corporate bosses think/say/want her to do. And I completely feel that. I see where she's coming from with the Fugees reunion. You can't force something if it's not meant to be, it'll feel unnatural and won't come out right.

U cant be hip hop (rugged and about the streets) & then turn this thing into the coorporate world (commercials and ringtones etc) All that shit takes away from hip hop's money! Nobody has a meaning to their albums anymore either that's y everything is washed up!

Tbh i cant see why you would call her crazy based on this interview, its one of the more sensible interviews posted on this site recently. Sure there has been reports of her acting crazy recently, but we all have our ups and downs.

To Elia
Her point of view is straight crazy she's nuts it would be cool if she could have a decent interview without trying to be this hiphop authority figure. True she has sold big but she has definitely lost a step or two....not feelin her no more.

Everyone goes through loss in their lives. She had a gift and is foolish for not using it to potential. It is said that music comes from God and lauryn talks like she is above music.

No matter what ANYONE says negatively regarding Ms. Hill, she's still got it and she's still as sharp as a double-edged sword. If and when she ever decides to drop something "commercial" (i.e. Miseducation) or "spiritual" (i.e. Unplugged) again, her LOYAL fans will purchase it, as usual... She'll get the usual platinum or maybe even 2x plat. for the spiritual, and diamond and maybe even 2x diamond for the commercial. If Lauryn really, TRULY decides to make a comeback, which she can AT WILL, unlike MASSES of other artists, her return will be embraced by the world.

So hate on her, kick her while she's down, and talk badly about her, but once she drops, it's all good, 'cause EVERYONE'll be singin' a different tune. The chick is a musical prodigy... PERIOD.
