Kanye West: The Blacker The Better

by JOKESTA

FRIDAY DECEMBER 21, 2007

With, Graduation, his biggest album to date, still moving out the stores, Chicago MC Kanye West has had tremendous success this year. But to what does he attribute the albums success to exactly? According to the Louis Vuitton don, a blacker undertone.

"[I made a] conscious effort to take it to the next level in every form of success. More black people bought this album than any I've made. Because I made the album blacker." Said Kanye in a recent interview with Spin Magazine.

"Can't Tell Me Nothing" -- how hood is that record? "Good Life" is straight Steve Harvey, all day long. "Flashing Lights"? I never had a record that was that black. But it's white at the same time.

Certain things are so good it doesn't have to be white or black.

That's what Graduation is. Take "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." It's a white sample, but everything I do to it is to make it as black as possible. So I'ma make the bass as black as possible; I'ma make the lyrics as intense as possible." Kanye continued.

He makes good music and Im glad for his sucess and sorry for the loss of his mom...but this DUDE can be a real clown sometimes...or is it that he is very over the top? I dont music should be classified as black or white...b/c that could can create a problem....what about people who dont classify themselves as black or white...then does that mean he is not making music for the "others"......

I LOVED The College Dropout! I like it way more than the Graduation...but it could've had a lot to do with the fact that I was in college at the time....I dont think that it had much to do with black or white.

yo kanye is my boy but i dont understand why he has to attribute things as being "black" or "white." kanye is expanding the hip hop genre by appealing to a wider demographic, and i think that is something that he should be proud of. however he seems to say things that completely negate that fact, just like this, ya dig?

All I can say is Co-Sign. Unlike Kanye, theres niggas out there that can be from the Hood, but they aint got that Hood mentality and sense....and they think that makes them hood. Ignorance. I blame society for makin niggas think bein from the Hood automatically makes them cool...it makes them different from the majority since people dont see the way we act alot cept on TV. Kanye is kinda actin weird here....not sure what to think. College Dropout was the first album that made me actually think bout what Hip Hop was and where it was going....mainly cause I grew up in the same type of situation as him.

what the FUCK is kanye talkin about?? more black people bought this album because he made it blacker?? soooooo im guess your number 1 hit single sampled a techno song made it WAY more black right?? do you know how many white people LOVE Daft Punk?? then he sampled them....i'm half white myself and been in these college clubs when they played "Stronger" and "Good Life"...these frat dudes and white ho's lose their FUCKIN MIND!!!!! no if he was on the "I'm So Hood" track then we might be able to talk about him making an album geared towards the black urban culture but.......THROW YOUR HANDS UP IN THE SKY!!!!!!!

Graduation was a great album but it really was over-hyped/overrated with the whole 50 cent battle for better sales shit. Musically College Dropout is better than Graduation.

One more thing, I think Kanye is wrong about more black ppl buying Graduation. Every single white person I know has Graduation. LOL Real Talk. Only like 2 of my niggas actually bought Graduation the rest of us bootlegged that shit, just like we did wit Curtis. We didn't fall for the media hype, both albums were overrated. 50's first two albums were better than Curtis and Kanye's first two albums were better than Graduation.

what the fuck is he talking about? Graduation was a wack cd. There are only a couple good songs, out of the 13 tracks, not to mention every track has a sample from a previous hit by someone else. Didnt Diddy try and do this same shit like 10 years ago. Graduation is garabe son!!! Go peep the new Chamillionaire or Freeway. Kayne should be suckin 50 off for gettin him all those record sales. just wait and see. next time kayne drops, its going to be straight into a toilet!

first of all Graduation was an incredible album. Secondly why is everyone hating on Kanye for saying this shit? They are having a discussion of the social demographics of hiphop and how Kanye tried to penetrate that through his music. That is reality, especially in the U.S. And music can be whiter or blacker. Black music is obviously from Africa and is very rhythm and drum based. White music stems from Europe with is more about harmony and melody. That is how jazz was invented: when Africans and Europeans started living amongst eachother for the first times in the U.S they blended there forms/styles of music and jazz was created. Black and white audiences are still very important today - sure there are other racial groups that listen to rap, but since hip hop is considered black ("urban") music and it is now fully exposed to the mainstream (WHITE AMERICA) how is this not a legit topic to discuss???

AND one more point relating to the samples he chose: Elton John, Daft Punk and Steely Dan - these artists are obviously considered more "white" than "black" especiallly if we're talking about their audiences. But Kanye adds crazy beats/rhythms/drums making it pure hiphop ie BLACK MUSIC. This is not only creative for hiphop but also a genius way to expand his audience and popularity across the globe. But he doesn't only use "white" samples - artists like Labi Siffre, Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 give the album a soulful (BLACK) sound too. Then he adds in beats like Big Brother, Barry Bonds and Can't Tell Me Nothing which are way more hood and appealing to real hiphop heads. Kanye thought about the songs he was going to put on this cd b/c he wanted it to be a global success and that is what he did, DON'T HATE

I think college dropout was alot more blacker. He needs to go back to his soulful beats he straid away very very far from it. Now we got stronger not bad but not all falls down or threw the wire. Those are classics I mean by me a spaceship and fly. Matter fact im going to pop that in right now album to nice. Kanye get your college drop out on man.
