Kanye's album was put together in a matter of weeks. It wasn't hyped all that much until basically the week before it's release.
GnR's release was about 15 years in the making. It was basically it was the "Detox" of the rock world. Even had a hype thing going with Dr. Pepper.
But Kanye's album sold more. I think that's a testiment to his skills as an artist. So props to him for it.
