According to a report by The Observer, West says he was done with hip hop because it has been "too cliche'." West claims his new music has created a new genre, labeling it "pop art," and is adamant that he will not go back to his previous style because he wants to cement his place in musical history.
"This is not hip-hop music. Taking a sample, looping it and doing all that 'throw your hands up in the sky' thing has become such a cliche. Hip-hop is over for me. I sing, not rap, on this album. I now want to be grouped among those musicians you see in those old black-and-white photos - the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles. And I'm not going to get there by doing just another rap album full of samples" said Kanye.
However, at a recent press conference, when asked to elaborate on his statement and reasoning for leaving the genre, West says that's not exactly what he meant.
“What does that mean,” West asked. “Hip-hop is over for me? I never said that.”
“That quote is like so wrong,” West responded.

I really don’t listen to new hip-hop albums that come out like that. I really don’t learn the lyrics the way I used to learn the lyrics when I was 18 years old and stuff like that. Even albums like Lil Wayne‘s album, which I love, I couldn’t recite the raps for you. I’m just not in that position. Maybe I’m just busy. It disturbs me that they paraphrase me.”
West's latest offering, 808's & Heartbreaks debuted at No. 1- selling 451,395 units according to Nielsen’s Soundscan.
The CD marks West’s third consecutive No.1 album.
In a related bit of humorous news, after becoming the target of Stephen Colbert's latest war, Kanye West has fired back via his official twitter page simply stating, "Who the fuck is Stephen Colbert?."
Colbert, who's known for his satirical comedy, recently launched "Operation Humble Kanye" after West besting him on the Itunes chart with 808's and Heartbreak.
