Jury selection for R. Kelly Case Begins
Jury selection for R. Kelly’s child pornography case took another significant step forward on Friday (July 20), paving the way toward a trial date.Kelly, who was indicted on 14 counts of child pornography stemming from a videotape that allegedly showed him having sex with an underage girl, was present at the Friday morning hearing however, he did not give an statements regarding the case.
Attorneys for both sides presented their jury questionnaires and the judge in the case set the next hearing date for Wednesday, according to Asst. State’s Atty. Shauna Boliker.
At that time, prosecutors and defense attorneys will present Judge Vincent Gaughan with a combined questionnaire form to be filled out by potential jurors, according to Boliker, who called this pre-screening process “unique in Cook County,” but necessary because of the high-profile nature of the case that has inched along since Kelly was charged in 2002.
Kelly has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The defense has not conceded that the person on the tape is Kelly, and it has suggested in past court filings that it may argue that the image was generated by a computer.
Lil Flip’s manager speaks on arrest
In other news, after the arrest of Houston-based rapper Lil’ Flip Saturday, June 21, 2007, his attorney and manager have released a joint statement regarding the case.
Sandy Lal, Flip’s manager, stated the charges of credit card abuse against Lil Flip are complete nonsense and will quickly disappear.
“Flip had absolutely no involvement with any sort of credit card fraud. He never personally handles any travel arrangements, that is left to promoters and travel agents. Any wrongdoing of any sort is clearly in THEIR hands. It’s unfortunate that Flip was a victim to this charade and his name has been tied to this situation due to his celebrity status. Nevertheless, we are in the midst of negotiations for various ventures including a multi million dollar relaunch of his Lucky Nites cognac.
According to Lil Flip’s Houston criminal attorney, Stanley Schneider, Lil Flip nor anyone associated with him had any knowledge that a stolen credit card was being used by a person hired to arrange his travel. A complete investigation will easily show that Lil Flip is innocent of all charges and is actually a victim of a scam.”
Flip turned himself in on the felony charge around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and was released shortly thereafter on a $2,000 bond.
