Hot 97 had it’s annual Full Frontal fashion show last night (their 4th) at the Hammersteins Ballroom. In attendance, Rap star Juelz Santana (of Dipset) took a few minutes out of his day to speak on a few topics to the NY Times.
Being that there is always commotion at the office of Hot 97, with beef, violence, amidst other things, Juelz gave his take on rappers being fearful to step through the doors of the station:
“This stuff is just entertainment, purely entertainment. These dudes be just talking. I mean, if a person does something like that at the radio station, they don’t really want beef; they just want to get caught by the cops. It’s too obvious, it’s like shooting me in front of a news crew … you wanna get caught.”
These are turbulent times in Hip-Hop, and the last thing we need is more violence. The same kind of violence that claimed the life of the Notorious B.I.G, whose 10th Anniversary just passed. Asked if Hip-Hops ‘No snitching’ rule had anything to do with the unsolved cases of Tupac and Biggie, Santana had this to say in response:
“I don’t have a theory behind it. Just wrong place, wrong time, ya dig? I do think there are people that really know what happened.”
Not just sticking to the usual Hip-Hop topics, Juelz even let the people know how he feels about the upcoming Presidential elections, and why he thinks black people are so into Barack Obama.
“It’s obvious that I’m going to say, “Root for Obama.” I mean, the white people stick together, they always root for who they want, people like George Bush. It’s obvious I’m going to tell black people to do the same. I follow Obama. I agree with a lot of things he’s with. But I like Hillary too, though; this should be a good race.”
Never one to shy away from a question, when asked what is the definition of Hip-Hop style, he immediately claimed his hometown.
“Ask anybody about Dipset, Harlem. We rock the white tees, the jewels, the jeans. And now you see those people trying to do our thing; we aren’t trying to be like them. We are being fresh in our own way. We’re Harlem, trendsetters. I do the bandanna thing. Harlem, baby.”
