Ever since the firing of radio personality Don Imus from CBS and MSNBC, it seems that the rap industry and its artists have been thrown under the microcsope, as the
lyrics they speak and the lives they live have become highly scrutinized. Jazz legend Wynton Marsalis is the newest member of the campaign to criticize the industry as he explained to the British newspaper The Guardian recently, claiming hiphop has become nothing more than “ghetto minstrelsy.”
“Hip-hop substitutes the plantation for the streets. Now you have to say that you’re from the streets, you shot some brothers, you went to jail. Rappers have to display the correct pathology. Rap has become a safari for people who get their thrills from watching African-American people debase themselves, men dressing in gold, calling themselves stupid names like Ludacris or 50 Cent, spending money on expensive stuff, using language like ‘bitch’ and ‘ho’ and ‘nigger’.”
When asked if Marsalis was using one portion of the culture to simply attack the entire genre, Marsalis explained: “Listen, I don’t have to attack hip-hop. Hip-hop attacks itself. It has no merit, rhythmically, musically, lyrically. What is there to discuss?”
And with the techniques of sampling older records into current hiphop beats, Marsalis expressed his distaste for this as well: “It just shows you that the drummer has been replaced by a loop. The drum – the central instrument in African-American music, the sound of freedom – has been replaced by a repetitive loop. What does that tell you about hip-hop’s respect for African-American tradition?”
Wynton Marsalis is currently the Musical Director of Jazz at New York’s Lincoln Center, and is also releasing his new album, “From The Plantation to the Penitentiary,” next week.

COMMENTS
FIRST!!!
FUCKING IDIOT, no rhythm, what the fuck is he talking about
even though dis aint goin get no comments, but i still was 1st!!! YA DIGG
He just shoved a foot in hip hop's ass! LMFAO!
hip hop is under attck from all sides. what are we gonna do about it.
Hip Hop needs to be attacked right now cause it aint hip or hop! Not alot of rappers right now are even rapping, so I don't even know why we even bother calling it hip hop. Unk aint hip hop, is amusement for kids. It can't be called hip hop if niggas aint spittin!
Assholes like that don't take time to listen to real rappers. People like him should try and write a quick 16.
‘nigger’.”
we dont say dat. and why now all of a sudden its a problem. we need 2pac back
This is giving me serious flashbacks to the days of Ice T's "COP KILLA" / NWA / SNOOP. Motherfuckas was trying to ban these cats from making anymore music.
The difference now is that no one is fighting back for the survival of Hip Hop. Niggas need to take this shit very serious especially when the likes of Russell Simmons is calling for changes in the lyrics in Hip Hop.
This nigga must have forgotten how Jazz music was looked down on when it first popped off. There were many people that felt Jazz was not real music.
Shit is not looking good. Motherfuckas want to blame Hip Hop for the ills of society when cats were calling women ho's, bitches and everything else before Hip Hop was ever thought of.
You know what, Hip Hop needs to be attacked right now.
The shit is stale and the good stuff is Overlooked.
Its kinda of like something swelling. Hip Hop started to generate some money, niggas jumped in, didn't care about it(Hip Hop) and now after all the neglect things are fucked up. Hip Hop is full of Niggas that don't really care about it. But since the public is picking at/on Hip Hop, this little bubble is soon to pop, niggas aren't going to make money off of it, and only the people who really love it are going to continue doing it. Making better music, appealling to the masses once again, and starting the process of swelling all over again. I believe its a cycle.
O and Co-sign what Ramadez said.
*Radamez.. my fault.
This is why I stay off the boards, so many idiots.Wynton Marsalis said some "real shit", to quote Dave Chapelle, but instead of dudes debating it, we get dumb comments like this "FUCKING IDIOT, no rhythm, what the fuck is he talking about".Props to radamez for having some knowledge and substance behind his comment, even though I disagree with some of what you posted.
I just think they are generalizing hiphop music these days. they can't say ALL hiphop music is filled with "HO, BITCH.. this and that" .. im sure they haven't even LISTENED to half of ALL the hiphop artist out.
who they need to talk to is .. the industry for REAL .. and not place blame on HIPHOP itself .. I know I don't go around saying ..BITCH HO this and that in my rhymes.
I may pull refference to one of the words ... here and there ..but it's not like every other word is bitch , ho and nigger.
this whole rap thing got OUT OF HAND .. I think we all need to take a step back .. and look at the bigger picture.
if we're not affected .. and we're not one of the many puppets out there ..who listen and hang off these rappers words .. then we need to affect change someother way.
we need to hear the "REAL" music and voice that , that's what needs to be heard.
To my dudes Ghost1N and Evil_Dre:
On some real shit I feel what Wynton was saying and I don't disagree with all of his statement. I do feel that our music needs to be more creative and not so fuckin predictable as it's been for the past 5 to 6 years. The bar needs to be raised. I really don't know where this music will be in the next 5 to 10 years.
It does bother me that the movie industry and other etertainment outlets are not under gun for promoting the negative side of Minority American Life!
Ghost1N I really hope your right about this shit being cycle.
Evil_Dre,
I cant fuck with the boards anymore either. Shit is like WWF for clowns.

This Jazz fool is ignorant. he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. THe reason most people attack hip-hop, is because they don't like the style, or they don't understand it, and have no desire to understand it, or they need a scapegoat for happenings in the world. Fuck this fool.
SO AFTER ALL NAS IS STILL NASTRADOMOUS RIGHT...HE ALWAYS TELLS THE TRUTH EVEN WHEN IT'S IN THE FUTURE...I REMEMBER RIGHT AFTER JAYZ GOT DOWN FROM ETHER NAS WAS TRYNNA SAY THIS I HEARD HIM TALK ABOUT THIS HIP HOP DOWNFALLIN A FEW TIMES ON INTERVIEWS AND RADIO AND SHYT BUT NOW HE DOESNT HAVE TO...HIP HOP GOT SHOT TOO MANY TIMES WE NEED THE REAL HIPHOP LOVERS AGAIN AND NONE OF THAT NONSENSE ON DA RADIO

Matic: Not sure what board it was but my bad my nigga. This particular topic got me feeling some type of way.
using controversy to promote his album.... lol... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I do not believe this man has ever purchased a Hip Hop album ever.
Never listened to lyrics of Talib Kweli, Mos Def KRS One, etc. Maybe he chose is words incorrectly. RAP is what substitutes the plantation for the streets. Hip hop is about getting out of this asphalt-paved plantation. I really hate people who look from the outside into something and swear they know everything about it. Of ALL people, someone who's been involved in the music industry for so long, HE judges it from the POV of every other ignorant ass person who distorts the deifinition if hip hop. I know that's most of the time the only way you can judge something, but this does not hold true for hip hop. All you have to do is listen and inform yourself about hip hop and you'll understand that it's much more than what the media portrays it to be. Hell, it's not even CLOSE to what the media portrays it to be.
Just my little vent session. Shit.
Fucking idiot.
charismatic, I haven't been on the boards lately, i'm mostly in the forums.I didn't see your "Top 30 Most Positive Hip-Hop Tracks Ever".Maybe you should post it in the forum section of defsounds, alot of dudes would discuss and express there opinion on subject. And if you did post it in the forum, let me know where it's at.
"I cant fuck with the boards anymore either. Shit is like WWF for clowns."
Yeah my dude, that's why I stick mostly to the forum.

nigga so what if youre first. youre first homo thats what you are. the king of homos.
Rap has become a safari for people who get their thrills from watching African-American people debase themselves, men dressing in gold, calling themselves stupid names like Ludacris or 50 Cent, spending money on expensive stuff, using language like ‘bitch’ and ‘ho’ and ‘nigger’.”
wow, no matter what, 50's name just happens to be included in everything. this dude just cant stay out of people's mouths. goddamn. lol!
but honestly, hip hop killed itself. as much as fans want to defend for it, what does hip hop have going for it to defend? it is nothing more than a gimmick. a minstrel show like this guy said. basically hip hop is just a fad of fads, or a fad within itself. times change of course, but how can anybody keep up with the everchanging dress attire, slang, oversupply of up and coming artists and more? who wouldnt get tired? hip hop used to be an art form, a way to express yourself through music. nowadays it just seems like hip hop is used as a fly-by job, a get rich quick scheme...build a character, give him a background story, make a hit record or two, promote it on video, get a billion radio spins per minute, collect royalties, and fade to black as if you were never there. also, with record sales declining (at least hip hop sales, which by the way is an interesting thing seeing how its the most popular music genre, but the least selling) artists dont feel to brush up on talent that people will forget in a few days. so they market whatever they know is going to sell. and with the fall of hip hop on its verge, it doesnt help that the south sticks to the same dogmatic cliche topics, while the west coast follows the trend instead of sticking to its roots, and the east so completely confused as to what east coast music is that they cant even find their own identity. you know, that sort of "throw it to the wall and see what sticks" mentality. not to mention these dudes couldnt get along if armageddon struck at this very moment. and because of this beef, it seems to turn fans off, forcing them elsewhere to listen to music thats less aggressive and more entertaining. isnt that what music is supposed to be about anyway? entertaining and enjoyable? hell, i get a kick out off diss records. i love them more than most records. usually because the artist puts more work into a diss record than he does a hit record. and theres the problem...all the energy and creativity put into those records are somehow lost when it comes to actual albums. maybe this is why hip hop is going back to the mixtape circuit even though thats under attack just as well. i.e. dj drama. and even that market is becoming oversaturated and more commercial. eh! whatever the case may be, i doubt hip hop will ever be the same, or if it will make a comeback. i'd love to see it happen, but until then we hip hop fans will continue walking through darkness...literally.
The thing with that Jazz musician is he dont know its creation, Way back into Africa they used word playz.
Even in the Jazz & Blues thats where Hip Hop was started at, Dude dont know nothing about it.
At the end of the day the Poleticans,President, others dosnt like people saying the truth, They dont like the fact people is saying whats real.
Another thing iz the artists use only the word Nigga.
African American`s supporting Don Imus? Talkin about use of words & stuff.
Usin the word "Bitch" is the same of saying the negativity about love, "You didnt know she could be loving her man, And at the same time burning her man".
Life aint PG-13 and all the negativity on Hip Hop need`s to stop, Either way they should look at genres like "Death Metal".
Why dosnt the Poleticans attack that one? Because Hip Hop is more of expressing & telling what`s going on where they live and what there goin through.
All that Bling Blings & all that stuff is just Pop Music, Real Hip Hop is form of expression.
Hip Hop 4 Life It`ll never die!
See this the problem these lame muthafuckers who put some reading glasses on and play "old school music" think they got some type of 1 up on our generation, because they accepted by the upper society so now they can look down on people who aren't concerned with being accepted by these people. This is 2007 we don't have to play no fucking African drums just because it was once part of our culture, we can do music however the fuck we want, we supposed to be expressing ourselves right so how somebody gone tell the way in wich to do it? He oughtta be ashamed of himself, go eat some tea and fuckin crumpets and shut the fuck up if you want any respect from this generation.P.S "bling bling" aint pop shit neither african americans been doin that shit from the original days thats part of who we are that shit come from us, so whoever else doin it biting us! Peoplez
Cosign wit what radamez n ghost said. I agree, this dude has probably never listened to some "real" hip hop in his life. Main reason being is because he's taking what MAINSTREAM RAP is... he's jus looking @ the surface, though. Someone else made a point that he's capitlizing off the recent backlash RAP has been getting recently when this guy just so happens to have a CD dropping in a week. That's not thorough. Sounds like a guy that doesn't like rap and wants to speak out on it along with everybody else int he world right now (as it seems) so that he can gain a few more numbers on the Jazz soundscan. That's all fine and dandy, but u need to hold much much more validity in your statments when attacking an entire GENRE of music besides "they have silly names". Seriously. I do this HIP HOP cuz it helps me get things off my chest. Money is never the main object, but if you got talent, capitalize off it. HOPEFULLY FOR THE BEST, though.
He just mad no one listen to jazz and the nigger, bitch, and ho,been around Mary Madlane was a HO!!!!!
no body want to read ur lame commments wyte boy, go watch spiderman u lil hoe
Wuddup Matic, My fault, I'm not on the main board either, I'm usually in the Forum.
I just got on real quick to check the site but here are a few right of the top:
2nd Childhood- Nas
The Message- Cassidy
The Corner- Common
Poison- Nas
Just a Moment- Nas and Quan
Stop Fooling Yourself- Skyzoo
Extreme Measures- Skyzoo
Good ol' Love- Masta Ace(Talks about the love of Hip Hop, If you haven't heard it go and listen!)
Chase The Clouds Away- Evidence
Whatever You Say- Little Brother(9th and Pete Rock Sampled Maxwell on this joint, CRAZY)Its more of a Love song but, Its a good listen. I'll post One more.
KILL THAT FAGGOT- S.P..... SIKE Nah LMAO!
Much More- Lupe Fiasco(Revenge of the Nerds Mixtape)
It's hard defend rap music not hip-hop. Hip-hop is a much bigger movement. When blacks my people learn to change some of our mentality in the hood, rap lyrics is not going to change. We need more balance. I blame the record executive including the black ones, i blame the dj's for not keeping it real with real hip-hop. Everyone can say "they giving what the people want" which is all bullshit to me. They pushing what they want to (getting money under the table)and it go to a point rap music have no balance at all, u have to search hard on the net for some good rap music or some underground record stores that still understand good music. Record lables A&R got very lazy not doing there jobs, signing dudes who have mixtapes which 90% of it is pure garbage. Let's get back to the art of this rap music with balance then we be all right.
The only thing i hate about some of these dudes statement about rap is two things
1. If they felt that way about hip-hop why they never spoke about publicly before the don imus fiasco.
2. They can't blame all of hip-hop community because not everybody that love hip-hop are ignorant, stupid or criminals. In fact most of the hip-hop community are good people with a few bad apples in it. I don't think that's cool when they target all of hip-hop, they wanna talk about the bad they should also talk about the positive rappers also.
DEFSOUND R U MADE YA POINT ABOUT HIP HOP NOT BEING THE WAY IT USE TO BE. AT THE SAME TIME AINT NUTHIN THE WAY IT USED TO BE. U MENTION UNK NOT BEING HIP HOP, I Agree, but your boy mention 2 of most talented and influential people inthe rap game, hip hop , or whatever your want to call it. 50 and luther can spit. so i dont know man. it is still under attack.
and another thing. i'm tired of everybody and their mama criticizing these artist ways of doing what they do. somebody out there unlie u all, likes what they do.thats why they sell records. they support the bullshit. when last did MOS DEF drop a major record. who's tryin to tell me that these clowns talking about hip hop or rap is deghrading ,but at the same time when cats like MOS DEF or Talib , drops a record all those millions of people dont go and support these rappers. at the end of the day, them same rappers be like fuc that. im making movies to get paid. now tell me what u expect from the next man who's tryin to make an honest livin rappin to do.rap about that conscious shit and sell no cds or rap about shit that can get u paid betta than McDONALDS. ONCE WE START SUPPORTING THE REAL, SHIT WILL BE FINE FOR EVERYBODY.
Thats true Smoke. I agree with what you said, everyone can lie and say "Oh yea, I bought that last Talib Kweli joint" or "Nah, you crazy I didn't buy that last Dipset album" but that same person will be the dude with all the bullshit CD's that they say they didn't buy.. It's obvious niggas are lying. Shit for all you know I could be one of these dudes.. Really the only way to fix these huge problems is to support the real to balance out the bullshit that is inevitably going to sell.
O and for the Record, The ONLY Bullshit CD i've copped was Cam'Ron's Killa Season and DJ Drama and Pharrell's Mixtape.. It sounded like a good Idea at the time.. lol..
This maybe a lil late, but for those that don't know, this dude has been a part of hip hop longer than most of you kats been alive. He's done work with DJ Premiere, Guru, And a few others. He has the right to say what eva the fuck he wants. With that said, I agree to a certain that hip hop has become more negative than positive. But I disagree on censorship. Nomatter if it's peanutbutter wolf, aceyalone, 50 cent, or whoeva. Remeba that this music help raise kids. Do you want to take responsabilty for a kid growing up to become a thug, or a positive person. Be responsible for what you say. Hate it now, understand it when you grow up.
He hasnt done work with Premiere he hates Hip Hop music, He aint even a real
Jazz artist
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wynton_Marsalis#Controversy
Hip Hop 4 life fuck all the haters
Let's get some things straight. Wynton has been against the artform of Hip-Hop/Rap for as long as I can remember. Don't get that twisted, he above all others i can honestly say is not jumping in cause it the "in" thing to do.
And he does have a point, Let's go like this compare Bleek's (Memphis vs Gillium) movie Bleek practiced everyday and worked to BETTER his craft and continued to do so, Can we honestly say Memphis has gotten better?
I'm not trying to hate on Memphis and Mr Jazz man is WAYYY off base but lets get some things straight.
1. The artist in the game are not respected as being artist, go to ANY music board not dedicated to HipHop and try to call a rapper and artist.
2. True HipHop NEVER sold... on the real we never bought the go stuff it just was .. we buy/bought party music but the bulk of our music that is on the chart's is never the sit and vibe to tracks ( if you try and name 1 I will toss out 10 for that 1, but stay with me on this)
3 HipHop is the culture and RAP has overtaken the culture (and this is not an advocation of backpackers.. just an acknowledgement that the other areas of HipHop have been shunned since the Fight the Power days.
These are just some of the ills that others see and yes it is our responsibility to stop what we see happening I noticed that positive artists where mentioned but we let the teenyboppers request the same commercial crap over and over. We complain about stuff yet no one fixes it. Stop waiting on some Messiah from within to do it.. HipHop is music for, from, of and to the people.
BTW it would amaze Mr Marsellusout how many DJ's and Producers are much more his peers than he thinks.
