As reported by the Stamford advocate, a celebrity basketball charity event featuring Jadakiss and D Block has been canceled due to black church leaders and community figures protesting the rappers’ attendance. Former board member of the Yerwood Center (where the event was to be held) Jere Eaton sent web links, lyrics, and articles, showing the rappers’ mishaps, and negative shortcomings.
“All of these artists are the worst of the worst. They’re criminals,” Eaton told The Advocate. “Their favorite word is the N-word, and they demean women by calling them bitches and hos.”
Yerwood Center’s president Deborah Sewell begrudgingly canceled the event, claiming she received over 60 calls from various people not in favor of the rappers being present. She has herself maintained a good relationship with the group for quite some times, and pointed out that the rappers were not performing, but only coming to play basketball.
“I’m disappointed, because I really felt this would have been a great opportunity for the community to band together and show up in force,” “They’ve always been supportive of the community and they love to play basketball,” she said.
Some local church leaders felt differently, including Reverend Tommie Jackson, who added: “You can’t have double standards for lyrics that impact your community negatively,”“The bottom line is we believe that the Yerwood Center needs to raise money but there are better ways of doing it than bringing in Jadakiss.”
Jadakiss and D Block have not yet officially been replaced for the event, scheduled to take place on May 18th.
