Hip Hop Dares You To Graduate

by JOKESTA

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 30, 2008

Hip Hop superstars Kanye West, Lloyd Banks, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, Fat Joe, and Diddy are among the many entertainers daring todays youth to pledge to graduate from high school and pursue higher education.

The dare, aptly titled "The I Will Graduate Campaign," is a joint venture between UK-based web startup Bragster.com and the New York-based nonprofit organization Entertainers 4 Education Alliance.

Students are asked to go to Bragster.com and pledge to graduate, and Bragster has made a pledge of their own: $1 to the organization for every new user who pledges to graduate, help another student to graduate, or both (up to $30,000).

Students who pledge will receive special incentives and an invitation at the end of the school year to a special webcast event with one of their favorite celebrity artists.

The I Will Graduate Campaign is a national call to action not only for students but also for parents, schools, community leaders, and the entire nation to stand together to make certain that our youth have the support and the tools needed to make achieving a high school diploma a reality.

I'm down for the positivity. How about we get started a little earlier like getting people to READ, or actually going to high school and not be high while they there. How about we strive for graduating with stellar marks, instead of just cheating to get by...

this is cool n all, but look at some of the dudes who is in it juelz, jim jones
now tell me if im wrong but juelz be talking bout getting high getting bitches n all that, i mean its all good for him to do something positive but its like double standard

hes saying do good in school
but hes also preaching bout getting high and banging bitches

but i guess if people like Santana's music and like him as an artist they might follow this do good in school thing if he's in it, or they could say hes a square and wack for doing it who knows
i think common should be in this no doubt and lupe cause they some good role models and have good music, but thats just my 2 cents and props to all them dudes contributing to it

Honestly this shit makes me laugh B; the message is positive but very contradictory. These same niggaz is asking you to graduate, but yet ½ off them ain’t even graduate. & the whole pushing white or Hustla music message,... What message is that? And if I was a lil Nicca, id’ rather go the soulja boy rout too; get my money quick. It’s sad but that’s what’s going on today.
Oh and why is Justin fuckin Timberlake on this shit? Just cause he’s fucking with our mucsic that don’t mean he knows our fucken culture now..and that’s real talk

That's ignorant. Sounds like you got that crab mentality. I know that this is contradictory to what their music portrays, but at least their not throwing cocaine at these kids and tellin' them "I dare you to sell a ki." The fact that they're offering money to kids who want to make something out of themselves should outweigh what their talkin' about. And just because people didn't graduate school didn't mean that they don't want others to succeed. Alotta dropouts regret not graduating.

Listen b, how’s that ignorant? I just said it’s a positive message, I just think it’s contradictory. At a young age what would you rather have Gwap or a degree? That why u needs peeps that have been there done that. Why don’t they have rappers come talk to University students but they have Bill Gate? U just quick to catch feeling, why are you mad? It was my opinion live with it.
I like what these guys are doing, but it’s not enough that’s all I’m saying.

Since you put it like that, it's not ignorant. I thought you were hatin' because they were doin' somethin' positive suddenly, like what Young Jeezy did (that was purely a publicity stunt). At 19, I'd rather have a degree, but not havin' the gwap is painful. I see what you mean. I'm just glad that some effort is being made. I do wanna know where's Ludacris and David Banner are. They're actually college graduates

That's why they want today's youth to get an education so they won't grow up and sound like your ignorant lame ass. We (black people) have people in positions that never been or seen the hood. But we also have those that came from some of the same hoods we rep. So please let's not make it a black or white thing. Because education has no color we're all the same in that if you ask me. It's all about a choice do you chose to get a diploma or do you settle for dropping fries for the next 50 or 60 years before you can retire and still struggle.

YOUR COMMENT MAKES ME BELIEVE YOU DIDN'T GRADUATE. DUMB ASS???????????????????

Its sad that most people these days think college is just a waste of time and there not gonna get anything out of it l0l! If your a minority its hard to get rich and be successful without graduating from highschool and college unless your good at basketball or do something musicly that doesnt require education!

Even if this is good move it´s still publicity stunt. If this ARTISTS want to help their communities they need to start doing it with their own music! Jim, Santana and others are amoung the type of artists that promote the miseducation of the youth. As leaders and role models, rappers need to start spreadding their real feelings of change such as this with their music! Don´t be destroing young people mind and then use this type of things to cover your image!

Kids that are going to graduate are going to graduate wether or not they got kanye co-signing them. Period. The kids that would rather be running the streets and getting in trouble are not gonna give a flying fuck about what alicia keys has to say.
Im not saying this is a bad look but the hypocrite niggas that are sponsoring it are clearly in it for the publicity. Nothing more, nothing less. Some of them are in it to give a good outlook to kids. I know kanye has devoted some of his time to making speeches and thats real, he a good man for that. Alicia keys too. And Jamie foxx. Both have devoted their own personal time and effort into addressing these kids personally. LL cool J used to make trips to lower income schools too and I give him much respect for that.
But...
Santana?
Justin Timberlake?
Diddy?
Ja-rule?
You niggas should be ashamed of yourselves! You all would sell your neighbors kids to iranian terrorists for a platinum plaque or more street credibility. Which is exactly what Justin T is doing this for. Fake ass fuck.
These niggas got crazy bread. If they went to the hood and chose a high school student to personally sponsor a college ed. for, they could write that whole donation off as a tax deduction. But do you know what they write off instead? Fucking jewelry and cars. Like I said, some of these artists I really respect for this. But some of them I really think are phony for it.
And why the fuck are niggas suddenly allowing Justin Timberlakes popcorn ass into our culture? He contributing to its demise. Call me a hater if you thought ayo technology was the jam but he shouldnt be eating off rap.

You got that wrong when it comes to Ayo Technology.

He wasn't trying to eat off hip hop.
50 was tryna eat off of him.

This is for a good cause though, I don't know how effective it will be, but they could all be doing something else, so big ups to everyone involved.

These niggas need to put funds together and build a state of the art music school in major cities so every kid can learn the past, present, and future of music regardless of income. In the US almost a half a billion dollars was cut from the education budget in arts and music. That money went to fighting a fake ass war. Go figure.

I read about the "I Will Graduate Campaign" on Global Grind and I believe that this program is a great idea. By providing incentives to the students, they will be more motivated to succeed. Often times students do not feel motivated enough to do the work they need to do, but an added incentive may push them to get the job done. Good look.
