So the 49th annual Grammy awards aired last night on CBS. And as many of you know or saw last night this years grammys(like almost every other) were not in raps favor. As I reported earlier when the nominations were first given out this was the first time in six years, no rap artist has been included into any of the nominations for a marguee category outside of rap. So besides the no-show of rap in The Big Four categories what about the other awards and performances?
Well to start it off many of the rap performances in this show weren’t as memorable as past
Grammy performances say perhaps last years Jay-z and Paul McCartney-Encore/Yesterday duet but they
were still some what good. In fact some most of the nights captivating performances came from other
categories that weren’t rap or hip-hop, such as The Police reuniting to perform “Roxanne”{1} or Christina
Aguilera’s surprisingly good rendition and tribute to James Brown singing “It’s A Man’s World”. But you still had solid performances from T.I. who hooked up with Justin Timberlake and a lucky guest singer{2}. Along side T.I you also had Ludacris performing with grammy award winner Mary J Blige. But besides the aforementioned there were no other rap/hip hop performances in the night. Unless you count Chris Brown or Gnarls Barkley.{3}
Despite the lack of hip-hop/rap presence in the performances, the stage wasn’t the only place rap played the backburner. Most of the awards given to the category were given out before the award show or during commercials. In fact the only award I recall being awarded live on t.v. was the Best Rap Album which was awarded to Ludacris right before he took the stage with Mary to perform “Runaway Love”. Now i’m not one to knock on another man’s success but it was hard to see Luda come out with a win from the Best Rap Album category especially with peers T.I., Lupe and The Roots{4} in the same drawing. But it seemed as if you were mentioning the name Mary J Blige this year your chances of getting an award were pretty good.
Other awards.Best Rap Solo Performance
(For a solo Rap performance. Singles or Tracks only.)What You Know T.I. Track from: King [Grand Hustle/Atlantic]
Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group
(For duo, group or collaborative performances of Rap only. Singles or Tracks only.)Ridin Chamillionaire Featuring Krayzie Bone [Universal Records]
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration
(For a Rap/Sung collaborative performance by artists who do not normally perform together. Singles or Tracks only.)My Love Justin Timberlake Featuring T.I. Track from: FutureSex/LoveSounds [Jive Records/Zomba Label Group]
Best Rap Song
(A Songwriter(s) Award. For Song Eligibility Guidelines see Category #3. (Artist names appear in parenthesis.) Singles or Tracks only.)Money Maker Christopher Bridges & Pharrell Williams, songwriters (Ludacris Featuring Pharrell) Track from: Release Therapy
On a side note: What was up with Smokey Robinson’s Hair and that sequenced shirt? I know he’s a legend but damn i’m pretty sure even Prince would have told him to turn it down a notch backstage. And speaking of Prince tell me his introduction to Beyone wasn’t anything but hilarious “one word-beyonce”. Reminds me of another classic hilarious Prince moment.
{1} Id hate to simplify such a great song to this but its the song Cam sampled on “What Means the World To You”.
{2}Was it just me or did any of you guys want to see that fine red-head appear on stage just for a second?.
{3}Which I know you don’t.
{4}Admit it you know that even though the Roots were suprisingly nominated there was no way the Grammys were gonna award them the Best Rap Album.

Shake your money maker was the best rap song? are you serious, Luda is nice but that song was so commercial
Luda's cool but I cant believe he got best rap album.
It's the grammy's people, what do you expect. They have a history of being clueless. They have given the best new artist to many band/artist who didn't last more than three years in the industry. They also gave best new artist to a woman(can't remember her name) who had already put out 5 albums before she won the best new artist. The first year of the Hardrock/metal catorgory, they gave it to a band who lead singer used a flute in his performances, over Gun N Roses and Metallica.I don't know that much about hardrock, but I know a guy with a flute isn't it.And this is just one of the many year where they screw up the Hip Hop catorgories, I remember Will Smith winning one year over some really great hip hop artists.
Ludacris performaces was boring.
Corrie Rae Bailey,John Legend and John Mayer performance was good.Love the whole bluesy feel.
Red Hot Chili Peppers performance was boring, but still good band.
Justin Timberlake performance with that girl was cool, the girl was sexy as well.Matter of fact, all the girls who were up to sing with him were sexy, especially the one named africa.
The overall show was boring though, and what is with fergie's speaking voice, she sounded like a wannabe hood chick.
Evil Dre, I rememeber that year with the debut of the hard rock category. They gave it to Jethro Tull who is like a folk band or some shit over Metallica. These dudes who are in charge in the submitting of a winner have pretty much no clue about any music but their own. Bullshit.
this is bullshit we all know that ludacris shouldnt of won the best rap album it shouldve been Lupe Fiasco or The Roots but i was pulling for Lupe because his album was amazing Lupe has got a future man is nasty and the roots album was off the chain yo grammys are bullshit they dont know shit
Yell reign, that was the band names,Jethro Tull even sound like some hippie folk shit. And when you look at the nominees for best rap album, there is no way you give Ludacris the award over Lupe or The Roots, but especially Lupe.Ludacris album was complete trash to me, while Lupe album was just so fresh with great songs and a different approach, compared to the typical Hip Hop mindless rap that is out today. And people really need to stop saying that "runaway Love" song is good,it's such garbage. It's like he went in the studio and said, let make a sad song so I can sell more records.Saigon's "Pain in My Life" is ten times better, but seem to get no play on the radio or the music channels.
them grammy people are racist. Man, how dixie chicks won 5 grammys dawg, and Corinne Bailey Rae ain't win nothing. Man they racist.
DIP-SET BYRD GANG.
Evil Dre, u right man, but them grammy people all like Oprah, they all know, not necessarilly listen to,the commercial stuff.
oli east, I think you taken it a little far with the racism charge.Like chamillionaire said this mourning on Hot97, 50 years back, there wouldn't been any black people there at all.The problem with the grammies are they traditionally conservative and are in many ways clueless to what is good music in different genres.Corine Bailey Rae is a good singer, but she isn't well known or commercial enough to when a grammy, that the politics of the award. You are right about them knowing of the music, but the fact is many of them don't know how to catorgorize the music, so they are already at a disadvantage when it comes to picking winners. When I saw the nominees for best album of the year, I was thinking to myself"don't give it to the dixie chicks", because that would be typical of the grammies, they are the safe pick, there album didn't have any buzz all year, but they have won grammies in the past. But not to my surprise, they gave it to the dixie chick, because that how the grammies have always been when it comes to album or song of the years, give it to the safe pick.Another example of that was Tony Bennet and Stevie Wonder winning for best Pop collabo/duo over Timberland and Nelly Furtado, which was complete bullshit. But again we come back to it, the grammies going with the safe pick, that most people will accept because they are legends, and throw out the fact that Promiscuos was blowing up not only the pop charts, but the HipHop/R&B as well, when the majority of people didn't know Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett have a song together, non the less, a song out.
The Grammy's is nothing more than a popularity contest. Every now and then they get it right. The got it right with Chamillionaire and Mary J Blige! Cham has to be the most humble and down to earth rapper I have ever seen. It's good to see someone carry themselves that way in the midst of all these bragging and boasting ass ego-maniacs.
Evil_Dre I do agree the slimmy that was on stage with Justin was a bonafide cutie. All of them chicks were fine!
My nig Luda did his thing this year, its about time he got his due.
fuck the grammy's
Shots out to OPRAH AND OREILLY
HAHAhaHA LUDA KLLD ME WIT THAT>>> HAHAHAH
FO SHO KILL UM WIT SUCCESS
EVEN THO TI SHOULDA WON...BIG UP 2 LUDA ...
yo, on the real, Christina shut that shit down.....that girl right there can fuckin sing, when she get on the mic, boy she aint playin.....
The Dixie CHicks won alot those people are so stupid who vote..
I love Christina's voice too. It ain't too many people in the game fuckin with her. White, black or any other nationality or from any other genre of music. Plus keep in mind that she kills shit LIVE and in person. Not just a studio voice... Plus think of the song she did... wheneva they want to do a tribute to someone whether it'sa t the Grammy's, Bet awards, Mtv awards, shit kids choice or any other event... they call her and she kills it!
Also I gotta agree with yall again as far as the Grammy's being a "Popularity" thing. Mainly commercial rappers or for the most part rappers that broke that "barrier" are going to win that. I guess that's a good thing though if u won it. Because it normally mean that u made a lot of BREAD!
Aiight that's my 2 cents on the Grammy's... really ain't my cup of tea lol (I always wanted to say that lol)
~Be Eazy
