Zekey, also known as, Ezekiel Jiles President of Dipset Records, was arrested in 1999 as he stepped off a greyhound bus with $30,000 worth of ecstasy pills in New Hanover County. “I don’t know if they were tipped or what,” says Jiles. “But they snatched me up.” He then posted bail and returned home to New York with a warrant still looming.
In 2003, After releasing the hit record “Hey Ma” in which Jiles sang the hook, Jiles along with Dipset garnered national attention. However Police were unaware of Jiles’s wanted status until he was shot down along with a long time friend in an attempted robbery near Greenwich Village, NY. His friend, Eric Mangrum, was shot dead and Jiles woke up handcuffed to a hospital bed, he was then sent to a maximum-security prison. “I poked my chest out—I girded my mental up,” Jiles says. “But it just ate at me.”
Three years later, Jiles is ready to get back to business. During his sentence he bought a studio with a friend and managed to record 50+ songs during six-hour day releases he earned for good behavior. He will soon be launching Dipset South in Greensboro. N.C. “People don’t understand how big North Carolina’s going to be,” he says. “It’s going to rise. Honestly, I do want to conquer this spot, because this is where I got locked up. I’m committed to this state.”
