Hip Hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, has been slapped with a $19 million lawsuit for allegedly failing to pay James Sabatino for music and video footage of the late Notorious B.I.G. Reportedly, Sabitino flew Biggie to Miami in 1994 in order to do a show, as well as to record. That night they recorded seventeen minutes of freestyles and the session itself was captured in about 90 minutes of video footage. Sabatino claims that he had a verbal agreement with Biggie, stating that the footage belonged to him because he financed the studio time and travel expenses.
After Biggie’s death in 1997, Diddy agreed to buy the music and video footage from Sabatino for $200,000. However, according to the lawsuit, Combs only gave Sabatino $25,000, along with a promise to pay the remainder within sixty days. Diddy stated that the delay was due to Sabatino being named by the Los Angeles police as a person of interest in Biggie’s murder. B.I.G. and Sabatino were scheduled to meet on the night of his murder, but Sabatino was a no show for the meeting.
According to the lawsuit, Diddy feared that the public’s opinion would be negative if they found out his company had paid a large sum of money to a person of interest in the murder. Sabatino was later jailed on unrelated charges. He claims that he has made several attempts to collect money from Diddy, and each time he was reportedly told it was coming soon. Sabatino claims that he was hesitant to speak about the dispute because Diddy was questioned by the police concerning the murder. He feared that Diddy would implicate him in Biggie’s murder, however the mogul told authorities he felt that Sabatino had nothing to do with the murder.
Diddy’s attorney did not comment on the suit when reached on Saturday (October 6).
