Recently, singer Akon was dropped from Verizon’s sponsorship due to their displeasure with his dancing inappropriately with an underage girl at a concert. He has since released an apology for his actions.
“First, and most important to me, I want to sincerely apologize for the embarrassment and any pain I’ve caused to the young woman who joined me on-stage, her family and the Trinidad community for the events at my concert in Port of Spain on April 12th,” he told TMZ.
“It was never my intention to embarrass or take advantage of my fans in any way, especially those under the age of 18,”“That is why we tried to make sure that the club did not admit anyone under 18 in the audience. Somehow, that standard was not met.” “Again, I apologize to those concerned and to all my fans and I pledge to all that we will strive to make sure this type of incident does not happen again”
The father of the girl, Pastor Dave Alleyne, still intends to hold Club Zen responsible for his daughter being allowed in, and has requested an investigation of said club.
Alleyne’s daughter had this to say about the ordeal: “This whole hip-hop thing is a guise and I don’t want any part of it, I don’t want to be any part of it. I thought it was going to be normal,” she said to the Trinidad Express. “I got carried away, I started to dance as well, but I never thought it was going to be like that. I was shocked; my head was hitting the floor.” “Look at what I have to go through with one mistake that I made. My dad warned me every time and I didn’t listen. I am sorry,” she said.
