J.Cole releases the official music video for “Lost Ones” that he shot back in 2008.
i wasn’t as big a fan of this joint as a lot of other people were. everyone was saying how dope this joint was when it leaked and i didn’t listen to it because i wanted to wait to hear the whole CD cohesively. the song is cool, and it definitely deals with a serious and relevant topic but, really, it wasn’t all that original. nothing i haven’t heard before. not trying to hate. props to cole for trying to make heart felt music with meaning. just the song itself, artistically speaking, was pretty average to me.
no one else in the game can write a song like this and no one can rap it with the amount of emotion that cole put into it. thats why this track is so good.
nobody can touch him right now.
and the visuals… beautiful
i agree the visuals are great. but i think someone could do an abortion themed song way better, with a lot more originality. he doesn’t say anything about abortion that hasn’t been said a million times. again, not hating, it’s not a solid song. i’m just big on seeing people do familiar topics in new ways and, to me, this joint was, overall, pretty typical.
My fav track along with Rise and Shine
Naah man, Busta Rhymes and all the other dudes and broads he had on that megamix can Touch It.
MC Hammer on the other hand….
I feel you everyone isn’t going to like every song by an artist they like but for me this song and video is just brilliant. You say its an easy topic to write a song about. Well when was the last one? Maybe its just that you cant relate and therefore the story just seems average but a lot of young men have had to deal with this situation and J Cole puts that scenario flawlessly into rhymes.
Ur right, there arent many songs on the topic- not in hip hop. But im thinking of art in general: films, documentaries, books. They’ve all dealt with this topic and its almost always the same. like all lifetime movies- same story told a thousand different ways. My point is, there are no new topics under the sun. But u can show those topics in a new way. Perhaps it wouldnt necessarily be easy. But i do have high standards and to be great- originality is a must.
I feel you on that abortion is abortion in a nutshell, but like you said no one to my memory has approached it Hip Hop. A lot of teens and young adults dont read books and watch documentaries like that and for a Hip Hop artist to bring this problem into the light in a way they can relate is a good look and he needs to be highly commemorated for this. This song is powerful as shit!!!
You know what, when u put it like – I that I agree with you fam. He’s relating to the group of people who need it most and communicating it to them in a way they can appreciate and understand. I think you meant to say commend… and you’re right on that too. I commend J. Cole for taking an important issue and bringing attention to it in hip hop. Thanks for helping me see this song from a different perspective.
*when u put it like that- I agree…
It’s not that original but wut mainstream rapper out there is really talkin bout stuff lyk this? It’s more original that all the other shit on tha radio n on tv… The video matches tha song well… Props to Cole for Puttin out that real life shit
another thought. i remember j. cole talked about saving certain songs he’d been holding onto for years for his debut album. this was one of those songs. in hindsight, i don’t know if that was the best idea. it seems like albums are their most cohesive when an artists do all their recording in one time period. the artist gets into a groove, finds a mood and a theme, makes an album that tells a story. i think his cd might’ve been stronger had he done that and not held on to old stuff. take ‘in the morning.’ i like that song, but i don’t think there was any reason for it to be on the album. ‘lights please’ might be the only song i can understand him putting on the cd.
Well, I don’t know about the album, but this song right here, is one of my favorites of the year, and definitely a classic.
For someone else it may be different.. but when I heard this song for the first time, I felt the emotions. It was like a real life story between two people I know. Every verse was so perfectly done. Especially the second. There is just so much emotion involved in Cole’s words and delivery. And that actress/model did justice to it in the video.
The production is another standout on this song. The violins are so soothing and the piano touches have been done with perfection. J.Cole has really evolved as a hip hop producer. Did anyone hear “Hiiipower” by Kendrick Lamar? Another stand-out of 2011, produced by Cole. He’s crafted so much art with the pen, and is slowly becoming one of the most talented producers out there.
But I don’t expect anyone to agree with me cause everyone has different feelings. How I perceive this song, I don’t expect you to, as well.
But there is one thing I do expect you to agree with me… J.Cole is one of the most talented rappers in the game right now. There aren’t many out there that can fuck with him right now. Period.
I agree with everything you said and especially HiiiPower. I bang that shit every morning when I’m getting ready for the day. Puts me in that fuck the society we’re in and on that let’s get it type of mind frame. HiiiPower is sooo slept on though, but I try to share it with my peoples and all of the ones I show like the message and are asking for more from Lamar.
I agree with both of you. J. Cole is not only one of the nicest MC’s alive today, he’s my personal favorite. And Hiipower is probably my favorite Kendrick joint.
Heaven’s glory in audio and now visual form. Hey atheists, you want my proof that God exists? Here it is, buck-o.
BBGun + JCole = Classic.
JCole is a musical genius. Next time I’m having a midlife crisis, I’m going to drive to IHOP listening to this at obnoxious sound levels while taking Abilify and crying my eyes out. Then I’m going to eat pancakes until I pass out.
i do agree that bbgun does great directing//cinematography with low budgets. i’ve enjoyed all his collabos with j. cole. i hope cole keeps him around to give him a shot at videos with bigger budgets.
hm. nevermind. a quick googling of bb-gun reveals he’s already moving up in the ranks quite nicely. and sticking with more soulful artists at that. nice.
Stevie Wonder. Mozart. Jimmy Hendrix. Charles Mingus. I say those 4 names to let you know that J. Cole, as much as I love him, is not- i repeat Not- a musical genius.
JCole is indeed a musical genius. Along with Joe Budden, The Weeknd, and many others.
Beauty is in eye of the beholder
Proof? Listen to Farewell, Pray for Me, and The Knowing.
All good songs, all songs i like- none if them genius. They all lack the subtlety and complexity that come with genius. Listen to ‘Innervisions’ by Stevie Wonder or Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. That is genius. Your ‘eye of the beholder’ view holds no weight. If that were true about genius, the word genius would have no value whatsoever.
Genius in the traditional sense of the word describes intelligence, natural ability, and creativity. Disregarding the intelligence aspect, it is absolutely subjective.
I took a music appreciation class that studied music the professor saw as “genius.” That class made me want to shoot myself more than anything else I’ve ever had the misfortune of experiencing.
And besides, I was clearly over exaggerating to reinforce the point that Cole is a great rapper who just released a great video to one of the best songs (IMO) in his catalog.
Well since you were over exaggerating I guess we’re done here. ; )
ZzzzZzzz… Cole’s album is one of the best for 2011, but still ZzzzzZzzz… lol
Make sure it isn’t raining or snowing out while your driving to iHop with the windows down bumping this shit, ok ded? lol
see that’s real shit. u bang wit’ j. cole but that doesn’t mean you like every one of his songs. how come when we say something less than favorable about an artist most of us like we get trashed. just because you like somebody doesn’t mean you have to be a stan. just because you dislike somebody doesn’t mean ur a hater. i can say with 100% certainty there’s no artist who has a catalogue i like 100% of. when you start liking songs just because of the artist who makes it… ur fuckin’ up.
Hopefully it’s snowing. I’ll fall asleep in my car and get snowed in so that the only thing I can do is eat pancakes and listen to JCole.
The only Z’s this song gets is when you’re crying yourself to sleep with it on repeat.
I used ZzzZzzz, because I was stating something that has been said over a million times. This song is a decent song, but I will say ZzzZzz again because I heard it over a 10 million times between 2008 and now… hahaha
Song only leaked a few months before the album tho…it was recorded in 2007…and if we view this song as good to great rite now and he did this so long ago imagine what type of shit hes on
what i love about this song is that on the surface it seems like the guy is in the wrong and the girl is the victim. but if you actually pay attention to the guys part he never says abortion. and his last line is “im not wit them niggas that be knockin girls up and skate out, whats the way out?” he tells her he doesnt plan on leaving and she still jumps to conclusions and freaks out (very typical of women).
the first thing on any guys mind whos knocked up a chick who he doesnt plan on spending a long time wit is plan b or abortion. but if a girl aint down wit that i dont see why adoption isnt an option. i bet for every 3 guys who leaves his baby mama theres at least one guy wit a crazy ass baby mama ie banana cream pie. but who am i kidding, asking a female to be rational is like asking WF for blogs back 😛
idk if Cole meant to do it like that but thats how ive always perceived it. dope song. dope vid.
its pretty obvious the guy is talkin about abortion. he doesnt have to say the actual word
hey buddy there was a second part to my comment. adoption is never not an option. hell you can still drop a baby off at a fire station no questions asked. i mean, the process to be accepted for adoption is pretty vigorous, i know b/c my aunt and uncle have adopted 4 kids. the likelihood that your kid will end up in a broken home is very small. plus im sure most of them are nice enough that you could visit or even be apart of the childs life while they raise it if thats what you want.
Decent song, Decent visual. Nothing more, nothing less.
Cole world! this is a classic song rite here! grammy material
J.cole is clearly by far the best artist out rite now as in he gives u quality shit all the time
J.cole is clearly by far the best artist out rite now as in he gives u quality shit all the time..
Oh shit cant forget ma nigga Spitta Andretti he too is puttin in that consistent shit of late..shot outs to him..Jets fool!
Great video to go along with a song ill be listening to 10 years from now.
This song is a classic in my brain.
yo ur one of those ‘classic’ hardbody abusers dawg.
Mickey Factz did a track before Cole did this one with basically the same concept called Wonderful Place on the In Search of the N.E.R.D. mixtape, by the way that mixtape is dare I say it “classic”
Check this kid out!..FUTURE OF HIP HOP..if he get out there!…someone
put me on him so im keepin it goin..SUPPORT GOOD MUSIC!
I posted a 10 point plan explaining how blogs would be worth any and all effort to implement and how it would help the site. It had 20+ props and not one response from anyone of importance.
We’ve all asked WF numerous times, but he always points to Jokesta. He abandoned the site while he still could.
I still lol @ the “play it or skip it” contest or whatever it was called that DS tried to have. You can’t make this stuff up.
WhiteFolks doesn’t ban people normally. It is usually the “owner” of the site. I was warned a couple times by the owner to watch my mouth. I also believe its the owner and sponsors who don’t want the user blogs back because of spam and constant monitoring. They should ask us users if anyone minds monitoring the blogs, but hey who knows? I doubt the site will change much more than what we currently have, my opinion tho…
i loved the blogs. we can talk about something or we can be about something. i’d be more than willing to boycott the site or, at the very least, not comment on any page unless we get blogs back. just say the word and we can organize something.
