Who Is The G.O.A.T... The Greatest Of All Time?

by LINQUEMUSIC

SUNDAY MARCH 4, 2007

I often get into lengthy conversations with my boy Al Cayne regarding the question, “Who is the Greatest of All Time… The G.O.A.T?” He tends to feel that it’s about longevity. I, on the other hand, feel that it’s about lyrical skill. I agree that longevity should come into play, but skills should be up there with it. How many entertainers nowadays don’t really possess any lyrical skill, but flaunt the type of longevity and financial success that tricks people into thinking they can bring that HEAT? Does longevity and money prove that they are great? Many believe it does.

We can’t even stop at longevity, money, and skills. To me, we have to move on to… being true to yourself. Who is really being true? Who is really living what they are rhyming about? Is this just a job to the recording artist? Is it mandatory for the artist to put their truth out there for us to hear? Maybe in hip hop it is? Isn’t that what hip hop is about? There are so many other factors that need to be accounted for.

Many people don’t know the difference between “lyrical content” and “flow”. To me, there are numerous artists who flow sick with it and ride beats like maniacs, but while they are doing that, if you really listen, they really don’t say too much. Perhaps these crazy hot beats are just camouflage for what is really lurking behind them – or does it really even matter if you are saying anything at all?

Versatility is so important. Many artists can’t move out of their comfort zone. Most of their music sounds the same. It’s crazy because they get away with it. It seems as if people like the safety of repetition. I guess it’s predicable and they prefer it that way. Is it okay to keep giving people what they want or what they think they want or do you make them want something else?
Being innovative has always impressed me. Wagon jumpers get no love here. Don’t get me wrong, it’s natural to feed off of the talents of other artists. It’s inevitable, but “swagger jackers” is something all together different. It seems within the last decade or so, it’s been totally acceptable to take someone’s style and run with it. Some make “nuff cake” doing it, that it seems like the right business move for them. It’s almost like a sure-fire way to break into the industry. That’s why I really respect true artistry. It takes balls to reach into your heart and uniquely express what’s in there. That type of courage and skill is so hard to come by these days.

So who really is “The Greatest of All Time?” Is it about longevity, skills, financial success, versatility, having the courage to be innovative, or is it a combination of all of these? Many equate courage with the ability to lift and pop off a gun. Many respect the longevity of criminals who manage to stay alive running the streets. Many admire the skills of drug dealers and the fast money that goes along with their lifestyle. Many of our young people’s role models are people who wouldn’t think twice to put a bullet in someone we love, but yet they still look up to them. Who is the G.O.A.T? What do you respect most about your favorite emcee?

TO me the G.O.A.T is Eminem his lyrical content is great. He has so many different flows. The man can rap almost about anythin and make it hot.People even listen to the wack group(d-12)because of him.At any given moment he can drop a classic song or even album.

The GOAT is RAKIM. That man fits every description of what was in the article. Lyrical Content(in the 80's he was always droppin knowledge and science that is still relevant today), versatility( from a slow flow on " mahagony" to a fast flow on "follow the leader". Originality(in the ghetto), innovative(new york), come on, RAKIM fits the whole package. HE was ahead of his time....a father to nas, Jay Z and Biggie.

^^^^^^^^^^^........this nigga said Lil Wayne is the greatest of all time, you stupid homie....LOL

Anyways, I dont really think there can be a greatest of all time, there are too many artists that give something to the game in their own way.....we have an overabundance of rappers but not enough mc's....I respect those that have given us unforgettable lyrics and lines that years later are still dope....thats why Biggie, Nas, Jay, Pac, and Rakim are my 5 greatest of all time....if the list went to 10, Id include Jadakiss, Krs One, Eminem, LL Cool J, and Big L for my top 10.....lyrics over hooks anyday, thats what makes a great artist....

For "Joey Crack" I agree with you 100% homie there's to many great ones to say this or that person is the best,If we go by numbers as far as years like 1980s 90s 2gs then thats different,But one thing i don't agree with is you said if it goes to top 10 KRS-1 dam he should had been in the top 5 homie just cause reasons.KRS-1 gave the game alot of color while he was in his prime nobody was able to fuk wit him back then on his level other then Rakim. And has everyone 4got about Big Pun.I know he didn't have alot of music out but the shit he does have out is sick. But as for the other guy with that Lil wayne shit WOW thats deep playa i never thought someone would say his name in a topic like this.Lil wayne is far from goat 4real,he's more like a mouse to me.Just getting the scraps off the floor. He trying hard so i give him some credit for that but other then that no way,Plus his albums are never all that to me,Now I would say if it went to 10 id say
in any order i don't care they are all good.
Rakim
Krs-1
Chuck D
Biggie
Pac
Big Pun
Scarface
Common
Nas
and Mos def he is hot to death i wish the nigga would put out way more music then he does...

well there are so many great rappers with great lyrical skills people say biggie is the greatest or tupac or lil wayne <<<<<<<<(which is definitely not true) but to me i think Rakim is the greatest he came out and shocked the rap game with his lyrics and his flow and how he used it so well hes a legend and in my opinion the greatest rapper of all time hes lyrics have been sampled more than any other MC so that tells you something but thats my opinion Rakim the G.O.A.T but dont get me wrong there are a lot of other greats like Nas, Eminem, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, Biggie, Big L, Tupac, etc.

I know a whole bunch of dumb niggas gon say weezy with no type of legitimate reason"

CJ u must be a Defsounds veteran! HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAHA! Defsounds should be called CashMoney-GUnit.com, 'cause people are really SERIOUSLY on 50 and Weezy's SACKS on this site. That's y i be need people 2 show some credentials b4 I respond 2 their shenanigans, antics, and propaganda. Anyhow, 2 get back on topic:

My G.O.A.T. (MALE & FEMALE):

MALE: Nas - Lyrical Mastery; Longevity (since what '92!? '91?); won perhaps the greatest publicized battle ever, EASILY; 4 Hip-Hop CERTIFIED Classics: ILLMATIC, IT WAS WRITTEN, STILLMATIC, HIP-HOP IS DEAD; 2 NEAR-classics (a lil off): I AM, STREET'S DISCIPLE (he tried 2 do 2 much). And, only because IT WAS Nas, God's Son & Nastradamus weren't all that acclaimed but had Nelly or Weezy made them, we'd be sayin' they were NASTY! It's like A.I. droppin' 23; we'd say he had an alright night. But let, say, Devon George AVERAGE 23 (which he never will), we'd be like, "Yoooo, Devon George is NICCCCEEEEEEE."

FEMALE: Lauryn "L-Boogie" Hill - Lyrical Mastery; Better than MOST DUDES that rap - in fact, she's in my top 15, ALL TIME... MAYBE TOP 10; Can sing VICIOUSLY too and can create songs where she both sings AND raps; HER SUBJECT MATTER IS OFF THE HOOK! She actually raps about "CONCEPTS", and NOT about sex, money, drugs, and bling; she DOESN'T make songs where you say the hook (e.g. "Walk It Out") 31 times (I counted) b4 the song even starts. OH, ONE MORE THING 4 ALL YOU DUDES THAT'S ALWAYS QUOTING RECORD SALES: The Score, 1996 - Biggest selling HIP-HOP album OF ALL TIME, selling 18+ MILLION WORLDWIDE... The Fugees' 1st album, Blunted On Reality went 2x plat, (YEAH, LAURYN GOT $) and not to mention 99's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill selling 8+ MILLION U.S. AND 18+ MILLION, Worldwide. Oh, AND MTV UNPLUGGED went plat., and she SHOWED LYRICAL SICKNESS on that joint if u could get past her LAME guitar, lol. That's Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston status! Had 2 use R&B singers cause NO RAPPERS can fuck wit' her.

to me tha greatest of all time, hands down is 2Pac. not to many people talked about the issues that he did, problems in tha communities, tha way some choose to live their lives and how to bring a change to tha world we live in today. a good it of the people in that picture brought on tha way rap is today wi tha flashy cars and jewlery, but Pac kept it to a level that everyone could relate to or have and opinion about. but to each its own if like to hear about what others got and yo might not ever get wipe tha cum from yo lips and come up for air. a artist is suppose to open mind for a possitive message not make you want things that make you look like something else, a trend follower.

Jay-z is hands down the greatest of all-time! Out of everyone he has been the most consistent. All nine of his solo albums have been hot. He's made songs with just about everybody, not only does the street love him but the suburbs do too. The man can spit his ass off and make you wanna dance at the same time. When he performs he controls the crowd like no one else. He sells out Madison Square Garden in one day (That's alot of people). How can you not give this man his respect as the G.O.A.T.? Name one other rapper out there that has accomplished what he did? How many rappers dropped that many hot albums? Look at the stats cause they don't lie!

Lil Wayne aint a hot rapper he let Gillie Da Kid write for him. How can you tell that? For example these are lyrics from an old Lil Wayne song:

I'm a rider boy, the hottest boy, respect me
Cause I'm on fire boy, on fire boy
Got them trees, holler boy, holler boy
Bout my cheese, them dollars boy, dollars boy
I'm a seventeen survivor boy, with choppers boy
I got guns that go BLOCK A boy, BLOCK A boy
Ya'll runnin with a monster boy, reason Wayne callin yall
And I'm a mobster boy, hit it right I get my ball on like soccer boy
I keep it right I ain't gon thaw it off I'm a Tymer Boy
Go up in flames blockburner thats my motto boy
It ain't a game, I cock that cause I'm inside a boy
I'm a pimp, got a wife that'll holler boy
Catch her at the house steppin out the shower boy
(shhhhhhhh) hehehehehe, got a lotta boys
Claim to be soldiers but lies boy
And if I catch em I'ma bat em and make em retire boy

Now how do you go from this above to this below?

This is the Carter y'all welcome, hard as Malcolm
Dawg is a vulcan Lord help him but y'all felt him
That make you a part of me and pardony
If a part of me is what you wanna be what you oughtta be
Dont worry Carter me I just actin accordingly
I give orders to the commander in chief, just the commander in me
Handlin streets in the mandarin V
I hear you haters slanderin me I just hand him the P
Any drama I pace it like Indiana, I take your grandma pacemaker and jus handle the piece
Not two fingers I simultaneously bout two bangers
You do not want anger USDA prime beef, ya dead meat
I'm so ahead of these trendy rappers speed up
I'm already hot when another one startin to heat up
Got Mannie hot wit me cuz I always beat his beat up
Yall cats wit y'all feet up startin to look like feet up, I'm G'd up
On the V'd up, in the truck I gotta put my seat up
In the trunk I got my bass and I ain't speakin bout no speakers
Whats leakin up out of yo speaker is the speech of Weezy F. Baby
No more no less Baby, so forth and so on
Front door livin room young nigga switchin we
What you need, get you crack get you weed
Make yo way to the back look ahead and see
White bitch in the bathroom givin head for speed
But don't you turn your head at me, the president been doin it
Daddy tried to ruin it
But I built this building from the ruts
I own all the corners and the cuts in this motherfucker
And the feds know just whats up in this motherfucker
Made niggaz so they cant bust in this motherfucker
So with that lets keep it movin, on to the kitchen where my witches keep it brewin
Uh huh look at how my bitches do it
Bucky buck naked look at all my bitches booties
They handle all my pharmaceutics
I got it from promethazane to metamucil
I'm crucial don't mean to spook you
But this is New Orleans so my queens do voodoo, ya know
So the things just move through
I feel ya pain I got things to soothe you
That fills the cane so wayne the nuetral
Dont hate the game hate the institution
That fills the cane so wayne the nuetral
Dot hate the game hate the institution, fucka

well, RAKIM has gotta be the greatest just cause he changed the way people flow.
him along with kool g rap, big daddy kane, kool moe dee, ice t & ice cube. they all had a straight flow without a corny type cadence.but if you had to say who changed the game it has to be the R no question. any real lyricist can tell you that.

and anyone who says lil gay ass wayne. you aint for real hip hop. that little winey voiced girl is wack as fuck.

Nas and Pac are the best rappers to me. Pac being #1, he not only influenced the rap nation, but America as a whole with his music and attitude.

And why does every topic have a I hate lil Wayne section. What is wrong with yall niggas, I been a Lil Wayne fan since I heard him on Juves 400 Degreez, but yall know dude who said he is tha GOAT is young and yall still going out yall way to bash him. But who knows, maybe that statement will be the norm in the next 5 years, but right now its Pac then Nas hands down.

I gotta go with Jay just based on overall success, but everything else I give to Pac and as far as everybody saying GILLIE WROTE FOR LIL WAYNE check out these GILLIE quotes from 2 separate interviews.

1. XXL interview
Interviewer: Were you straight writing verses for Wayne, or was it more of a coaching thing?
Gillie: No, Wayne had good breath control, so it was really more of a study thing.

2. HipHopdx
HHDX: Which albums did you ghostwrite for?

Gillie: The Carter 1, I didn't do the The Carter 2. I wasn't even there for that.
HHDX: Which songs did you write for The Carter 1?

Gillie: Pretty much all of them.

Now are yall gonna believe tha man who can't even get his lie straight. Now come on, if you gone lie at least be consistent with what you're saying gillie Damn son!

defsounds r, you're a fukin retard........gillie aint write shit......if gillie wrote his shit, then how come gillie cant even conpete with lil wayne now.......and on top of that......that was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy back lil wayne......he was still young......when you are that young, you are gonna improve, wayne wasnt too old too impprove........it would have been a diff story if his style switched up in a whole year......look how long wayne been in the game for........hes gonna get better obviously......you think jay z was born rappin like that????

First of all calm down, gets some tampons, and shut the fuck up! 2nd of all the reason why Gillie Da kid can't compete with Lil Wayne is because of his image! Lil Wayne is a more marketable artist, Gillie Da kid can't ever be a mainstream artist cause no one can sell him! Gillie da kid can't even compete with Birdman, does that mean Birdman is a better rapper? No! It means he's marketable! Why do you think Cassidy never went Platinum? Cause he's not marketable, he's a monster when it comes to spittin but you can't sell him, he has no personality. Think about it? Everyone seen when Cassidy ripped the hell out of Freeway, but Freeway still had a better career than Cassidy. Freeway has personality, and Cassidy doesn't, so don't get that confused with lyrics! If Freeway and Cassidy dropped an album the same day, I bet Freeway will outsell him becasue of his personality, it has nothing to do with lyrics. So that means Cassidy can't compete with Freeway, this doesn't mean that freeway is a better writer, it just means he's more marketable. So when it comes to Gillie da kid not competing with Lil Wayne, your right he can't. He is using Waynes name to get famous and we know that, but you have to go after the money maker to get paid.

And for the second part on every Jay-z album he was spitting his ass off and got better. Lil wayne was just straight trash, and suddenly got better. You can't get that good in five years! He didn't even progress cause 500 degreez he wasn't spitting good at all! It just seemed like he got better overnight as if there were no growing periods, and plus he's not consistent of what he says, so that means he aint keeping it real, and if you aint keeping it real in your music it makes your music wack. Cause why you rapping about shit you don't know about? How can you really tell an honest story? First he kisses Jay-z ass, then he disses him, then he apologizes to him. The nigga needs to make up his mind! He said he doesn't write nothing down like Jay-z, he said he's the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired, he started calling himself President Carter like Jay-z, his whole career was based off of Jay-z's blueprint and then he turns around and disses him! Wayne is like The Game he can't make up his mind!

I don't think BIG should be in the greatest of all time conversation. Now read this before you try to bash me.

1.- he only made two albums living
2.- I dont think either one of them are truly classics, because he didn't have anything relevant to say besides talking about women, money, drugs (what everybody else is talking about today basically)
3.- he just didnt have time to mature as an artist, and who's to say his style would have changed

I'M GONNA SAY THIS 1 MORE TIME... I'm not gonna say any names; the culprits no who they are.

THE HOOD DOES NOT BUY CDS. PERIOD. THEY BUY BOOTLEGS...

WHITE KIDS GO 2 TOWER RECORDS AND SAM GOODY AND THE WALL 2 buy cds. There4, RECORD SALES MEAN NOTHING. Again, the Pink Panther sold wayyyy more than Swordfish, so can Beyonce Knowles say that she's a better actress than Halle Berry? Nuff said. If that's the case,

Lauryn Hill

is the greatest rapper of all time, because she has SOLD more THAN ANY other rapper in the history of rap. And she IS a legend and extremely nice. As long as you guys continue to "quote" record sales, I will continue to keep bringing up her 40 MILLION in record sales. Now, WHO'S STATS ARE BETTER THAN THAT?

Oh and EVERYONE DOESN'T "know" that Mike is the best b-baller. Some say Kareem. Some say Doc. Some say Wilt. Some say Bill Russell. That's just 4 the record. Just like people say that Ali is the GREATEST. Some say it was Sugar Ray Robinson. Some say Joe Louis. Some say Rocky Marciano. Some say ROY (in his prime).

And MJ, you're right...I think this WAS a topic before. And, maybe we'll NEVER agree on who is the greatest ever. We'd have to come up with criteria and WHO would even agree on the panel of "experts" who choose the criteria? It's a never ending debate. AND GILLIE DID write 4 Wayne, so I wish y'all little wayne eaters get off him, damn.

Secondly, I'm sick of y'all leavin' females out...PICK A DUDE AND A CHICK...
reiteration of my picks:
Male: Nas
Female: Lauryn

1 more thing, as far as Jay-Z goes, I'm sick of people saying that Vol. III and the Gift & the Curse and the collabs with R and hell, Kingdom Come (1/2 of it was) were FIRE.

VOL. III (OVERALL): Ass cheeks.
the Gift & the Curse: Weak. He did too much, unnecessarily. Take the BEST tracks from BOTH cds, combine them into 1, and we have a classic, but J flooded the cd wit' too much filler and b.s.
Best of Both Worlds, I & II: Do we even need 2 go there?
Kingdom Come: About 1/2 of it was hot...That means 5 tracks.

Jay is NOT the best rapper ever. He's in the Top 10. Maybe in some's Top 5. Perhaps even, Top 3, but NEVER #1. Sorry.

And all B.I. rapped about was NOT money, cars, and hoes. Are you LISTENING 2 the music or just SKIMMIN' through it?

YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS. BIG can DEFINITELY be in the G.O.A.T. conversation. Wow, y'all just be sayin' anything. I gotta get offa this site 4 a couple'a hours 'cause y'all infectin' my mind with derelectic propaganda and it's KILLING ME. START SHOWIN' SOME CREDENTIALS DAMN IT.

I Thinks Defsounds R Had It Right Just Look At The Stats He Put But Thats Not Even The Main Reason Why I Would Consider Hova Th G.O.A.T
I Feel Jay-Z's The Greatest Because If U Take Wat U Like About Ya Fav Emcee/Rapper Or Who U Think Is The Greatest The Boy Jay Got It.He Has The Lyrical Content Of Biggie,The Versatility Of Flows That Rakim has,The Art Of Story Telling Like Nas And Pac and the Still Can Throw A Club Banger at anytime and he might not even do all of these things the best but he does Them On A High Level And I Bet U Cant Say That About The Rapper/Emcee Who You Think Is The G.o.a.t He/Her Might Be Good At one of those things but not good enough to do all at the level Jay-z Does.If You Want to Put It On financial success Just Look At(Roc-A-Fella/La Familia,Def Jam,Rocawear,40/40/S.dot's I Really Dont Need To Continue). If Its Longevity You Lookin For Wat Rapper You Know Got Better Album By Album With An Exception Of A Few Which He Didnt Downgrade. If You Differ I Would Like To Hear Your Opinion But Till Yall Change My Mind The G.O.A.T None Other Than The Big Homie

charismatic: you're a fuckin contradiction nigga. listen. you said this:

""""WHITE KIDS GO 2 TOWER RECORDS AND SAM GOODY AND THE WALL 2 buy cds. There4, RECORD SALES MEAN NOTHING. Again, the Pink Panther sold wayyyy more than Swordfish, so can Beyonce Knowles say that she's a better actress than Halle Berry? Nuff said. If that's the case,""""

So record sales mean nothing to you? Right after saying this, you start citing l. hill as goin huge in record sales and then try to discredit jay's reasonable doubt because

""""and REASONABLE DOUBT DID NOT go Platinum... Yeah sure, NOW it might have moved a million units, but I think in 96 WHEN IT MATTERED, it barely went gold...if that, I don't remember but I know 4 A FACT, that it didn't go plat... GET Y'ALL FACTS STR8 MAN...DAMN IT.""""

You just contradicted yourself within the span of like 5 minutes. are you joking?

reasonable doubt is a classic, who cares if it didn't sell well at the time? listen to the lyrics, the beats, and the flow. gift and the curse was fire. it had a whole CD worth of incredible tracks, and one CD of filler. i'm not saying it was a classic, but the blueprint 2.1, which left out the filler, is amazing.

you're crazy.

I agree w/u MileHigh(1!)... I am from the hood too.... I buy cds 4 the artists i want to support, too... i.e. Nas - Hip-Hop Is Dead.. I bought FOUR copies. The point I'm trynna make is, I USED TO WORK @ Tower Records right after I graduated from high school, and I saw it with my own eyes... White kids come in the store in DRONES 2 purchase rap cds, dog... I used 2 work the register... TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. Of course, we buy cds, yeah, but NOT, AND BY FAR, not in the same capacity as they. If an artist, like say 50, goes 3x plat., trust me, white kids purchased about 50% (generously low) of them cds. The labels, the hood, the djs, the radio stations and everybody else cover the rest.
