We Got Next: The Nations Capitol Next in line on the rap scene.

by AMJ1227

FRIDAY JANUARY 26, 2007

For as long as anyone cares to remember Washington,D.C. has been about one genre of music; Go-Go, pioneered by Chuck Brown a living legend across the US. A new era has begun in the District in the form of hip hop. Washington, D.C. has always been a city that has its own identity rather it be fashion, music, slang or politics. The district is yet to have a hometown hero in the rap game, but all that is destined for a change. With more to talk about than guns and drugs Washington, D.C. native Wale is ready to put the city on his back and carry them to the promise land. Wale has become a superstar in his hometown by incorporating go-go into his sound, and with his refreshing unique lyrical ability has become one of the most requested artist on the local radio stations. With his biggest hit “DIG DUG SHAKE IT” he captured the attention of everyone in D.C. Wale also appears in clubs frequently and when he does the buzz is electric once he hits the stage. Although Wale is leading the pack he is not alone in the race to the top in D.C. Southeast Slim and the entire Emp camp has been creating a astonishing buzz with their mixtapes and singles. Southeast Slim who has a variety of lyrical style will definately be making alot of noise in years to come. Also Tabi Bonney who recently released an album backed by his smash hit “Put Me in the pocket” in which he tells of life in DC is another artist enjoying the success of the uprising in rap in the Nations Capitol. Rap has traveled from section to section from New York to Cali to Philly to St.Louis to Atlanta to Texas to Florida and now it may very well be Washington, D.C.’s time. With Wale leading the way the nations capitol definately seems poised to make a run at hip hop stardom.

Southeast Slim who is a native of the Southeast side of Washington, D.C. delivers that ever popular flow. His lyrical ability ranges from top to bottom. He seems to be able to flow about anything on any level at any speed. He delivers a range of topics from his life to women to how everyone wants to be a gangster. Although he doesnt claim to be the next kingpin he mentions the everyday struggle of growing up in dc which keeps him in touch with his “street cred”. Southeast Slim who is a well rounded individual leads the Emp camp with outstanding lyrics and production. He has been featured on songs with Wale, and has put out a plethora of mix tapes. One of the factors that seem to work in the Emp clicks favor is that they actually grew up together, they werent put together by a record label or they didnt meet rapping, these guys actually came up through the same struggle so they are very insink. Slim demonstrates lyrical assualt on almost every track, which definately has him as a front runner in raps next movement.

Wale who has released several mix tapes delivers a variety of flows on the albums. He has that slow flow, he can speed it up, or he can rap to a melody, his variety should deliver that sound that the rap game is looking for. On tracks like “freaks” where he raps over the old school beat with a serious flow where he creatively displays his feelings towards the groupies. He also comes with the much needed club banger with “dig dug” where he represents his hometown throwing the go-go sample on the track; ala Amerie (one thing). He captured the heart of D.C. with that smash hit. He shows his lyrical content on “ryhme of the Century” with lines like ” errythang yall say so pac related, yall niccas aint shit yall constipated”. His lyrical ability seems to be on a level that can take him to superstardom. His lack of drug tales, and shootouts is what seems to draw a new breed of fans, his refreshing choice of topics is definately what is needed. Hip hop is not dead, maybe it moved to D.C.

Look out for our upcoming interviews with Wale and Southeast slim, and also check for them in the spotlight. Check out the singles from the Nations leaders in the rap game

That nigga Wale kill it at the club LOVE...You can hear his new mixtape HATE IS THE NEW LOVE on www.43studio.com. Southeast Slim he got a remix with Junior Reed (voice on One Blood) keep it rockin for real. No beef I was reading your comment Hyfee and I was wondering how you could call "walk it out" (ATL Culture-dance music) a gimmick. In the Bay don't they "Go Dumb" "Ghostride whips" "Krump" and bang E-40 TURF Talk? I like hip hop so I can recognize it has different faces. Would you consider the Bay's face of hiphop a gimmick? Just conversation

and hyfee-bay-ridah if you didn't know on "Tell when to go" Lil Jon sampled a go-go song for the drums. And without those hard drums the song wouldn't have been as big of a hit as it was.And Red-T-Boy good looking on the shout out to Go-Go but Crunk came from Go-go Lil Jon said when he came to D.C. in the late 80's he got hooked on it and incorporated it into his music with Miami bass. Remember go-go has been out since the 70's

Man joey crack they love that put me in the pocket. Honestly I aint like, then it start catching on, girl love it. People like it cus they can relate, its all bout dc slang and life in dc. People don't realize dc is one of the most copied cities ever.....people get mad when I tell them but its true. Jus to give u a few things people stole from us......jim jones and this nike boot thing, on everything I love we have been rocking them since 02-03. I can show you pics from my freshman year in college with them on.....Ny niccas used to be like them joints wack...now they all on them. The whole jean craze, they used to make fun of us cus we wore designer jeans and we didn't wear them all baggy, now everybody off they skate border fit wit the chain....you can even go back to the 80s and 90s, the versache thing and all that, puff was at howard and took it back up north, the jewelry thing, man if u get a chance watch the Rayful edmund story. He was the biggest drug dealer and they talk bout how puff stole his style. He gross 300 million a year. That term stylin on em, that came from a neighborhood in dc....Its funny cus people think everything come from Ny. I'm not tryin start nothing but those are all FACTS

amj1227 thats real...but i remember when nigga was rockin them nike boots 98 and flightposites...i also read that long "lesson" and clearly he is local. I mean he doesn't know much about other parts of the country. In the south music is a big part of the culture. 36mafia created the the first CRUNK mainstream and argue they came up with it the music. but Jon helped the culture so to speak. But all the things you talk about from the drug abuse communites to music it is deeply rooted in all genres within hiphop. swangin texas, sippin lean or sizzurp south shit. and gogo was major.. big...hell most of hip hop was sampling those sounds and james brown. I was just blown how one could shit on another form of hiphop and defend it with crack, '70's, hookn up cars, and dancing and drawing a line saying its different. when the only difference i can here in the music is they don't rap on beat, the treble is high, and sped up. I Had a friend from fairfield and he bumped that shit...and i grew to apprecite the music. i don't net bang but bang bang bang

wale is pretty cool. im not feelin this southeast slim dude like that tho. Word up its some talent in DC on the hip hop scene... Okay I'm lying, there ain't much. Alot of the "rappers" I've heard here. (and trust me I've heard a LOT) sound like they're stuck in limbo with who's style they wanna steal. Whether it be Wayne or Three Six. Truth be told, if Wale's gonna open the door for DC Hip Hop I'll be the next one on the front porch with microphone in hand.

yo i'm a lyricist from southeast DC(and still living there now).
and s***'s real round here. and we ain't gotta talk about it in our music cuz anybody who's ever been here already know how it goes.

1.round rappers dont make up dances fans do.
2. we are a balance between southern club hits and northern lyrics cuz we can make a club hit wit' deep lyric's punches, metaphors, wordplay etc. or go grimy so DC's a versitile place.

dc/md/va residents watch out for my mixtape coming soon..... word on the streets vol.1
and if anybody wanna battle me on here or see my lyrics than it can be done.any style
