In an industry where your image and persona mean everything, it’s not surprising at all how many rap artists engage themselves in what we know as “beef.” Sometimes these instances stay strictly on wax, and other times artists may find themselves having to deal with
their problems in the “streets.” Rocafella’s Tru Life isn’t a stranger to this arena, in fact the only real publicity that has ever followed him throughout his career has been based on his problems with other artists within the industry.
What is interesting about Tru Life, is that you will see or hear him speaking of saving the youth and different ways to steer the youth in the right direction, yet at the same time watch him instigate situations on record and in the streets that seem to suggest he might be thinking otherwise. So what exactly is “Tru” about Tru Life? Is he genuine when he says he wants to help steer our youth in a positive direction? I don’t think so, and in fact, he very well may be the biggest hypocrite in the rap industry.
Tru Life: “The Righteous Uniting Everybody Living In a Fantasy Environment.”
To an individual blind to the hiphop culture and rap industry, “Tru Life” can seem like a powerful statement. And indeed it is, but preaching something and actually following what you preach are two entirely different stories. In 1999, Tru Life became involved in an underground fued with Mobb Deep, in particular Prodigy. In the Beef DVD Vol. 1, Tru explained how he took it upon himself to confront associates of Prodigy’s in a studio: “We ended up taking it there, we ran in the studio, 9 guns, 2 shotguns, you know slapped a few cats up, we sent a nigga home butt naked and all that, we G’d up for real.” G’d up for real? An interesting statement to say the least.
Tru Life re-emerged onto the scene in 2006 by signing to Jay’s Roc La Familia label, and within no time, threw himself into the middle of Jay’s ongoing battle with Dipset, in particular Jim Jones and Cam’ron. Although he has been defending Jay, Tru has also expressed his distaste for Dipset claiming to be down with the bloods, and why its bad for them to promote that onto the younger generation.

But in an interview with “Streets Illestrated” in the very same year, Tru Life seemed to express his general approval of gangs: “I’m not against the gangs, I fuck with the gang shit.” If Tru fucks with the “gang shit,” why is it a crime for Dipset to express, on their records or in the open, the affiliations they allegedly have with the blood gang? Could it just be Tru has a personal problem with them in general, and is using gangs as an excuse to down the Set?
Of course the most recent incident surrounding Cam’ron might have been surprising to many, but as usual Tru’s comments regarding the incident were not. After appearing on Ed Lover’s Morning Show, Tru stated: “They [Dipset] promoting gang violence to the children and the youth, I’m a positive fellow. I’m not on no wild wannabe gangsta stuff.” Oh really Tru?
Only a few months ago Tru was singing an entirely different tune in an interview with All Access Magazine in regards to Dipset’s JR Writer: “Do somethin’ nigga, Im in New York all day, do something I ain’t got no fuckin bodyguards with me, no nothin’, do somethin’ nigga.” A few weeks later, another video emerged in which Tru continued to taunt Jim Jones and Cam’ron: “Nigga I aint got no bodyguards nigga, if I’m so broke, I can’t afford no bodyguards right? Well I be talkin’ alot of shit don’t I? So one yall niggas need to come shut me the fuck up.” For a man who’s not interested in involving himself with “gangsta stuff,” Tru always seems ready and willing to handle anything in the streets.
For Tru Life, the phrase “practice what you preach” doesn’t seem to hold any meaning. By throwing himself into situations or instigating instances that result in violence, there is nothing that can be said that could turn these situations into positive examples for the youth. It almost seems as if Tru wants people to see him as a positive person, but just cannot separate himself from the very mentality which fuels his aggressive nature. Its understandable that the streets may never leave a person who tries to better himself, but in this case we have to cut the bullshit. Does Tru Life really care about the youth, or does he have a personal vendetta against Dipset? In all honesty, nobody believes in saving the youth, the record companies and labels are in the business to make money, and the rap artists clearly give people what they want to hear regardless of how degrading or violent the lyrics may be, so Tru, we’re sorry but “we dont believe you.”

Very Very Nice Article...
Tru Life A Clown Just Like The Rest of The Dipset
Nice Written Article, THat is Tru "Practice What You Preach" this nigga tryin' to be to hard and forgets what the fucc he be sayin at times
tru life is a nigga that speaks truly from the bottom of his heart. on some real shit he's from the streets and he's a real dude regardless at the end of the day.i mean he doesn't initiate beefs wit the set. he just hates the fact that dipset put on a front like their bloods and thats promoting a bad picture for the youth. So he keeps it real where hes from and thats how he was raised to speak the words of truth and be a firm believer of calling out the fakes.
Tru Life had a problem with dipset before he signed 2 Jay-z... Tru life fucks with the gangs but does not promote it for everybody 2 think its cool.... He from da strrets so of course he is affiliated but he doesnt try to make it look like its cool 2 be apart of it.. I think he is real dude and has talent.. If u listen 2 his mixtape it sounded like it could of been a good album without the dipset skits..it as hard.. and i think alot of people can agree with me..
im not a fan of tru life but if you gonna talk about the dude being a hypocrite fine it seems that way but if you gonna hate him then hate pac as well and call him a hypocrite cause he is just the same as well most of these rappers contradict themselves all the time and one more thing i dont hate pac i just keep it real.
TRUE LIFE NEEDS TO KEEP IT REAL. HE NEEDS SPOPULARITY BUT HE GOES ABOUT IT THE WRONG WAY. THAT NIGGA HAS TO CUT THE FAKIN.
co`sign wit visa2014...Tru came from that shit , but doesn`t jump around to promote it like Dipset and he still looks more a man and realer then Dipset...who keep talkin` shit and keep gettin` jumped and they still think they cool...tru fucked them up ! period .
im not a fan of tru life but if you gonna talk about the dude being a hypocrite fine it seems that way but if you gonna hate him then hate pac as well and call him a hypocrite cause he is just the same as well most of these rappers contradict themselves all the time and one more thing i dont hate pac i just keep it real.
Good point Chad4401, it's funny I was just about to post the same exact thing. The night he died he was stomping someone out, he wasn't a hypocrite.
This article is nice- got a lot of good points- Good shit Billy Ocean.....
Fuck all that shit. Sell some records nigga. Then handle the beef. I feel wat a lot of yall dudes sayin, but dis dude Tru suckNO HOMO. He a real nigga, but if u a rapper, then rap. That dipset dis mixtape was garbage. Good looks on exposing cam, Once again, but Tru need to rap some shit.
The Mobb Deep Beef wasn't like they said it, if you look at the Beef Vol. I DVD Tru Life apologizes in the End and sais that he was young and stupid and sometimes you gotta swallow your pride.
Another bullshit example was the gang stuff. He's on the westcoast often, so could he really speak against Gangs? I mean even gangmebers say they don't want the youth to get into that but still they're in gangs.
I can't say i believe Tru Life, but he wants to show what New York is like for real and not this dipshit bullshit, so i gotta say i think Tru Life's a good dude!
Thanks billy ocean..said everything i wanted to with WAAAY better grammar and stuff lol...tru life is the biggest hypocrit...
This is why its so hard to be positive in the rap game and get some where. Bs articles like this, & then the people who reads it blindly agrees without fully understanding each situation. Ste.K.O. stated facts pretty well. (2 posts above)
He's not on camera claiming anything. So as far as the gang shyt goes. I fail to see how the article applies. Each statement can actually be disputed but its a waste to go into each one. What I will say though, is if people are looking for a change. Quit ignoring those trying to help the process. Smashing down others attempts, whether it be to your approval or not doesn't justify it. An infact makes you worst when you do.
any motha fuccin wayz! yall act like tru life is suppose to lay down for these niggaz. especially for the media... get that shit thro yo head that this is all a publicity stunt. thought yall would of learned that from the whole game and g unit so called beef.
cats gotta understand that just because youre tryna do positive in the hood, it doesnt neccesarily mean the hood is taken out of you. im not familiar with other hoods but in nyc, a lot of dudes who eventually decide to leave that gang life believe in doing good. but because of their aggressive background and nature, theres just some things that take a long time to change. hey, nobodys perfect. same with tru life. hes a grown @$$ man whos tryna promote positivity for the youth. okay so yeah hes down with gangs and raps about the same cliche rap topics. its common. but heres the thing: "hes a rapper!!! let me say it again. hes a rapper!!!" if people are looking to rappers for something positive, then the whole worlds lost. maybe he shouldnt be talking about all that positive nonsense that no ones buying and just stick to rapping.
P.S.
them mighty dippity dip setters are one hell of an annoying flamingo gang. dont matter if youre tru-life or whoever. them niggas get under everybody's skin.
Whoever wrote this article aint from the streets at all...U aint got a hood bone in your fucking body...Anybody who agrees with this silly ass article aint never experienced the hood either...Niggas be having mixed feelings about shit and only a real nigga has the heart to speak on it...I myself do things out of anger or excitement and truly regret the shit later...I totally relate to this dude. That is the realest shit...Most niggas want to be positive but things happen that FORCE you to go a different route. WHO DOESN'T FALL SHORT OF WHAT THE CLAIM TO BE ALL ABOUT AT TIMES????...Whoever wrote this article is a fucking hypocrite, just a one from the suburbs.
Point blank, regardless of who's side you're on, there's been a LOT of negativity in Hip-Hop lately. I thought that this would be a good article to talk about something positive! I was thinkin' hard on my drive to work and I came up with this. With all the people who regularly comment and post on defsounds, I was wondering if we could come up with a list of say, the Top 30 MOST POSITIVE HIP-HOP SONGS OF ALL-TIME... With EVERYONE'S input, we might come up with more... Of course, the list would be in NO PARTICULAR ORDER (NPO), and people have to agree. If agreed, songs can also be removed from the list. Of course, we're probably gonna argue over what we are gonna define as positive. I guess, POSITIVE, can mean a political/social awareness track, a feel-good party hit, females not advertising their bodies or dudes exploiting them, tracks that have a meaning and/or send some kind of message, & not rappin' about bling, $, cars, hoes, etc. I'll start it off, with some hot joints off the top of my head:

Tru Life is corny. He is a big ass hypocrite. Talking about gang violence is something you should'nt teach to the kids, but he goes on dvd and says he had 9 guns to niggas heads, and made one nigga walk home butt naked! He's an asshole, he can't rap, so why is he even around?

Tru Life is a walking contradiction but what can you do? When you in a certain situation, things just pop off. That whole Mobb Deep case on the dvd, he even admitted he was young and ashamed for what he did. He has kids and needs to grow up. But then he gets on other videos and youtube talking all g'd up. What are you going to do when someone is talking shit about you and try to make peace? He tried to get on the phone, and make peace but knuckleheads don't want peace. It's too soft, so Tru had to do what he had to do.
Yo Matic, why don't you come into the forum and talk about this? You would get a lot of positive responses and hits. You guys can even tune into DefSound radio, call in and talk about whatever lol And I mean whatever LOL
Anyways, I gotta think about positive songs, but the ones right off the top of my head
Dangerous Minds - Coolio
Jesus Walks - Kanye West
Muhammed Walks - Lupe
Get By - Talib
and the number one positive hip hop song isssssss Hit Em Up - Tupac lol j/k
Hey Young World was Super Positive! That's the Slick Rick joint I was thinkin' about and couldn't get it out! I'll replace, ummmm, nah, I'nt wanna replace nothin til say, 3 o'clock, so we'll just keep addin to the list til then...

31. Hey Young World - Slick Rick
32. Jesus Walks - Kanye West
33. Muhammed Walks - Lupe (I never heard this joint)
34. Get By - Talib Kweli
CrazedHipHop, Hit Em Up? ahhahahahhahhaa, you know we can't add that, Dunn!
We as humans can all be contradictory at times , especially at the heat of the moment we all make mistakes. He to me is human just like all of us. The thing I truly respect about Tru-Life beyond everything else is he sees the change in NYC. I am a new yorker and have seen the uprise in bloods and crips over the last 10 years. The types of crimes alot of these gang members do are so pointless but very serious. At one point the bloods were into random slashings for initiation into the gangs. In my friends neighborhood a group of bloods slashed a elderly woman while she cleaned her stoop , for no reason..... A group of crips killed a kid over a ipod. New york has always been a tough place but to add on these gangs does not help. This is not L.A . For Tru-Life to speak against the gangs in New York, he has put his life on the line , because now he has thousands looking to do harm to him. Everyone in NYC cant stand these gangs but no one speaks up against them. Instead these NY rappers embrace them , for whatever reason I dont understand. Sometimes for a revolution you have to use force. Whoever wrote this article needs to look at the big picture you criticize him when hes the only one speaking against the gangs , but you have no problem with evryone who shoots them out in a positive way. I hope that more rappers come forward like he has and speak against these gangs. We as minorities have too many problems in our neighborhoods , we dont need more....

GKid, how is this not positive? What thread stays on topic when a major story breaks out? Go through every thread on this site, and stories/editorial give you something else to talk about but pertaining to the same topic. Tru is talking about being positive and then doing contradicting shit, so we are listing songs that are positive. I don't see anything wrong. If you got beef with Matic, let it be known. You have a problem wit him and hate the idea that he came up with an idea and people are actually responding to it.
35. Hey Mama - Kanye
36. Freedom of Speech - Immortal Techique
37. Positive Balance - Immortal Technique
I Want to Talk to You - Nas (Nas curses too much in the hook to add this though!)
38. Reason - Nas
39. Zion - Lauryn Hill (Is this R&B or Hip-Hop? Are we including, SONGS that feature rappers, by the way?)
40. Love Is - Common
41. Baby Don't Cry - Pac (I don't think I ever heard this joint, but oh well)
and newrome i was visiting new york when that kid got killed over an ipod. when i heard that i was like damn, niggas are crazy nowadays. you mean they couldnt just jack him or someone for their money and buy an ipod? they were gonna rob him anyway! at least let the dude live. gang violence is a serious thing in nyc. people daily dodging bullets and tryna survive the streets. its a sad environment. but to look towards a rapper as a savior isnt the answer. tru life may contradict himself, but is this anything new? who hasnt contradicted themselves before? people do need to come forward about the gangs though, thats definitely true. theres enough problems in the hood as it is.
Yeah, we're trynna come up with the TOP 30 EVER, so @ 3:30 p.m. we're gonna start narrowing down the list... what about B.I.G.? He had some positive joints... Sky's The Limit, right? Jay? LL? Run? KRS? Jeezy? Lil Waine? 50? Cam? Now's the time 4 ALL THE GUNIT AND DIPSET LOVERS TO CHIME IN...
42. Sky's The Limit - Notorious B.I.G.
and as for crazed, only you and real talk responded to charismatic. you made it sound like its the whole room. by the way i never mentioned what you three are doing as "not positive", i said off topic. so once again i have no idea what youre talking about.

Baby Don't Cry - Pac (I don't think I ever heard this joint, but oh well)
are you serious
My bad... i was thinking positive but I was supposed to say on topic. How is this not on topic? Again, the whole story is about being positive for the kids and doing good things but Tru went against his words.. so Matic came up wit the idea after listening to the radio about the Tru incident and said is there any positive songs in hip hop. There and we are compiling a list. So I meant to say how is this not on topic? It is in a way. Go through all the topics that has a lot of energy and it always goes off topic or leans away to stay but talks about another thing. Nothing wrong with it at all.
