I would like to begin this with a question, who is your favorite male rapper? Once you have done that, try to think of five reasons why this person is your favorite. Is it their skills on the mic, their ability to capture you with their lyrics, the beats that they pick, or is it the overall persona and everything that makes them the artist that they are? Everyone has different opinions so the artist that we choose will vary, but the one thing that we all want for our favorite artist is success. We want them to succeed. We like them for who they are and those who oppose will not make us change our minds about them, but what if your favorite rapper was gay?Now pick your jaw up from the floor, take ten deep breaths, and prepare to have your eyes opened to the music that is called “Homo Hop.” “Homo Hop is one of many terms coined to refer to the growing presence and collective identity of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people involved in hip-hop culture.” Yes that is right, gay and lesbian rappers do exist, and while we speak they are on the never ending grind to make it big and finally be respected in the industry. Artist like Cautious, Dutchboy, and Deadlee are openly homosexual and trying their hardest to make it big. But it seems that the Hip Hop industry is ten times more homophobic than the KKK. Ninety percent of the mainstream music coming from our Hip Hop artist is extremely homophobic and misogynistic. It’s not taboo to hear an anti gay or lesbian line in a rap album, and even though the game has changed a bit, the same type of bosses that promote this homophobic and misogynistic music are still around and striving. So when will the change occur.

As much as I want to support Deadlee’s statement and say that he is right, there are too many people in the world who want to destroy everything that is different or hard to understand. There are too many homophobic record executives who have no problem blackballing these lyrically flamboyant artists. There are too many listeners who are not ready to hear about their audio gangster’s same sex pleasures, and could you imagine the uproar if in all of 50’s video’s there were scantily clad men in questionable positions? The fines from FCC would surpass Bill Gates net worth. The masses do not want to hear, Ludacris talk about how big his mans penis is, or how much he has had to struggle from being black and gay. It just seems that even if you are gay, you will never be able to come out of the closet, so your entire career will be a lie.
For those of you who do not know, this is not just a fad, there is an entire gay culture. The gay rap movement is building momentum so you might as well prepare yourself for the inevitable. There are groups like the PHAT FAMILY (www.phatfamily.org), gayhiphop.com, and http://www.myspace.com/homorevolution that support these artists and will help to get them the mainstream attention that they want. One of the most controversial ventures of the gay hip hop community will be the gay hip hop tour donned, “The Homorevoloution.” This tour will be billed as the first ever tour of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender rap artists. The tour is slated to kick off on March 29 in San Diego California.”
Going back to my original question, what if your favorite rapper was gay? What if all of this time when DMX said that he would tear your butt hole out of place he was serious, what would we think of him then? When thinking about homosexuality, most people think of the openly flamboyant gay guy who wears designer clothes speaks with a lisp and is very feminine. There can be no masculinity in homosexuality, well at least that’s what a lot of people today feel. So if T.I. comes out of the closet tomorrow will he lose all gangster credibility, or will he now be considered a gayngsta?
In a world that used to just be racist, we seem to find new reasons everyday to hate someone, or to treat them differently. While everyone preaches tolerance, how many of us could practice what we preached if we were directly affected by the situation. It is so easy to pass judgment on others, and it’s even easier to join an entire society in saying that something is ok. But tell me how you would feel, if the best rapper dead or alive, was a straight up homosexual? Not the kind that is amazingly feminine, but a Homo Thug. It can happen, it will happen, are we prepared for it, maybe not only time can truly tell. So before that time comes, sit down and really ask your self, can I accept Homo Hop?
