Last quarter while Jay-Z was doing his media blitz for Kingdom Come, touring obscure networks broadening his fanbase, he stopped over the Yankees Yes Network to do an interview with an announcer. He and the host sat down and talked, going back and forth about typical Jay-Z questions, barely touching on the music because it was obvious that he was out of the loop with rap music as a whole. But he continued on with his questions, till finally the topic of music came up in which he stopped Jay with a question. “If you were on your death bed and only had five minutes to hear a final song what would it be?” Jay leaned back into his chair thought about it for a split second and the answer quickly came to him. He only responded with one word “Juicy”. The president of Def Jam and rap legend in his own sense, with a classic catalog of his own to choose his own epitaph from, choose the words of another man to captivate his last living moments. That was Biggie.
Rich or poor, there was no way you couldn’t relate to the man. When it came to the wordplay of Biggie, few had the ability to paint a picture so vivid. On Juicy, amongst his many collection of records, not only does he narrate his own tale but that of the many others that grew up in the everyday struggle. Even if it wasn’t you growing up in the lifestyle, you could comprehend what it was like “eating sardines for dinner”. From the humble begininnings “birthdays was the worse days” to the come up “up close and personal with Robin Leech,” you were there with him every step of the way. You were there in at a house party lost in Brooklyn, popping bottles of Moet. You were there on the high speed boat chases in the middle of the Ocean. And you were even there when perportrators were trying to stick you for your papers(Damn).
The way he expressed his views of the lifestyle, there was no way you couldn’t believe him. Nowadays, if a rapper would come up stating he was just rhyming to feed his daughter and later rap about being “Next Frank White,’’ there was no possible way you wouldn’t call bullshit. Yet with Big, it was exceptable. He wasn’t labeled as a “coke rapper”, “backpack rapper,” he was just simply that, a rapper. Numerous times we’ve heard rappers speak of there criminal life before rap, but with Big it was taken to new levels. “I wouldn’t give a fuck if you’re pregnant give me the baby rings and the number #1 mom pendant” proved this wasn’t a man with whom you’d want to cross paths with, in the streets or on the mic. The man who could be more self depricating then Skee-Lo, “Heart throb never, black and ugly as ever,” (sorry Kanye you weren’t the first self-conscience rapper) could also tear mics, “excuse me flows just go through me, like trees to branches, cliffs to avalanches, it’s the praying mantis, deep like the mind of Farrakhan, a motherfucking rap phenomenon,” without losing a step.

In the track “Getting Gwap,” Papoose brags about being the first to have a freestyle put into radio rotation. However not only was he not the first to have a freestyle put into radio rotation, he wasn’t even the first from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn to have it done. Even though Papoose’s “Sharades” was a good track, it contained the feeling of a studio recording. On the other hand Biggie Smalls’ “Live at the Garden” freestyle not only includes a crowd cheering in the background, but a simple boom-bap beat, being cut up by Big Daddy Kane’s Dj Mister Cee. Regardless of its radio spins if Sharades were to come on the speakers of any club, the dance floor is liable to be cleared. But let the chant “Where Brooklyn at, Where Brooklyn at?” blast through the speakers, once the words “I got seven Mac elevens about eight thirty eights…,” hits the crowds ear, the club will tear down, still to this day, almost fourteen years since its oringal recording. But what is more amazing is that no Biggie song with the exception of maybe “Hypnotize” has a sound like it was cookie cut especially for clubs or the radio, there simply played in clubs because they all have cross-over appeal.
So here we are ten years to the day since the world lost Biggie. Even though he was a son of Brooklyn, his home was Hip-Hop. So many labels try to repeat the success that was Biggie, but they all seem to fail. They get lost in the fact that although he rhymed of his mafioso ways, he still had a humbleness to his roots. His name dropping wasn’t that of legends that came before him, but that of the sounds he would hear growing up. Coogie wasn’t popular until Biggie told you it was, Brooklyn wasn’t a place you wanted to be at until Biggie made it Brooklyn, it almost seems fitting that he had his reign in between the golden age of rap and the age of coke rap that is occuring now, because it was neither an excess of both ages just a pefect combination that rap fans now and then could relate to.

Chillin in heaven smokin blunts wit Pac. RIP BIG.
big was the first rapper i liked. first rapper i recited his lines. greatest to me. thats why the name is notorious.
I would give him the crown but 2 albums over Pac's 5 (while they were alive) is not enough. Sadly BIG probably would of been THE GREATEST if he dropped a couple more albums to show his full potential, but his life was taking away 10 years ago.

lets just say 80% of my bk experiences there was trouble lol i'm an LI lady
In The Commision, you ask for permission to hit 'em
He don't like me, hit him while wifey was with him
You heard of us, the murderous, most shady
Been on the low lately, the feds hate me
The son of (*Satan*), they say my killing's too blatant
You hesitatin, I'm in your mama crib waitin
Duct tapin, your fam' destiny
lays in my hands, gat lays in my waist
Francis, M to the iz-H phenominal
Gun rest under your vest by the abdominal
Rhyme a few bars so I can buy a few cars
And I kick a few flows so I can pimp a few hoes
Excellence is my presence, never tense
Never hesitant, leave a nigga bent real quick
Real sick, brawl nights, I perform like Mike
Anyone -- Tyson, Jordan, Jackson
action, pack guns, ridiculous
And I'm, quick to bust, if my ends you touch
Kids or girl you touch, in this world I clutch
Two auto-matoes, used to call me fatso
Now you call me Castro, my rap flows
militant, y'all faggots ain't killin shit
Ooops Cristal keep spillin shit; you overdid it homes
You in the danger zone, you shouldn't be alone
Hold hands and say it like me
The most shady, Frankie baby, fantastic
Graphic, tryin to make dough, like +Jurassic+
+Park+ did quick to spark kids who start shit
See me, only me
The Underboss of this holocaust
Truly yours, Frank White
RIP BIG

Donna Carradine, keep her hair done all the time
My rhyme, somewhat Shakespearean, blood I'm smearin in
Tongue-kissin my lawyer, at my hearin
In this day and age, my rap is like the plague
I married this shit, y'all niggaz still engaged
Turn blowouts to 360 waves
How this 12 gauge feel sittin on ya tongue, on ya lips 'n'
dippin with money L in the green beamer
Sippin Zima's, on our way to see Katrina
She said she need a "Freak Like Me," like Adina
Fucked her by mistake she had a twin named Regina
I seen her, lights excite all the freaks
Squirtin on curtains, lips, tits and sheets
Compete, meet death, ya dead, ya die..
Don't fuck with B-I, that's that!
RIP BIG
Armed and dangerous, ain't too many can bang with us
Straight up weed no angel dust, label us Notorious
Thug ass niggaz that love to bust, it's strange to us
Y'all niggaz be scramblin, gamblin
Up in restaraunts with mandolins, and violins
We just sittin here tryin to win, tryin not to sin
High off weed and lots of gin
So much smoke need oxygen, steadily countin them Benjamins
Nigga you should too, if you knew
What this game'll do to you
Been in this shit since ninety-two
Look at all the bullshit I been through
So-called beef with you know who
Fuck a few female stars or two
Nigga, blue light, nigga, move like Mike, shit
not to be fucked with
Motherfucker better duck quick, cause
Me and my dogs love to buck shit
Fuck the luck shit, strictly aim
No aspirations to quit the game
Spit yo' game, talk yo' shit
Grab yo' gat, call yo' click
Squeeze yo' clip, hit the right one
Pass that weed, I got to light one
All them niggaz I got ta fight one
All them hoes I got ta like one
Our situation is a tight one
Whatcha gonna do, fight or run?
Seems to me that you'll take B
Bone and Big, nigga die slowly
I'ma tell you like a nigga told me
Cash Rule Everything Around Me
Shit, lyrically, niggaz can't see me
Fuck it, buy the coke
Cook the coke, cut it
Know the bitch 'fore you caught yourself lovin' it
Nigga with a Benz fuckin it
Doesn't it seem odd to you
Big come through with mobs and crews
Goodfellas down to the Mo Thugs dudes

Heart throb never black and ugly as ever
However I stay Coogi down to the socks

Once ya grin, I'm in game, begin
First I talk about how I dresses this
In diamond necklasses - stretch Lexuses
The sex is just immaculate from the back I get
Deeper and deeper, help ya reach the
climax that your man can't make
Call him, tell him you'll be home real late

First of all Pac wasn't as nice as Big on da Mic. Pac was a better artist and talked bout real shit, but Biggie ripped shit. So Pac and Big were different, cant really compare.
