Jay -Z: The Savior

by DEF SOUNDS

SUNDAY OCTOBER 15, 2006

Many of you might not realize it, many of you are fully aware, and a lot of you are in complete denial.

New York has fallen off the rap/hip hop game.

Now before you NY cats start cocking your guns and throwing up your pink and purple Dip-set bandanas (seriously, pink and purple..all homo…) hear me out.

Lets reminisce a bit and go a couple of years back when ALL the hood AND club bangers were coming from NY. When “Give it to Me” was bumping outta every car, when “Wanksta”took over the underground and the mainstream radio waves, when the only song we had that told us what to do was the cha-cha slide.

Remember that?

That was NY holding it down.

50 cent and G-unit, Jay Z and the ROC, Mobb Deep, Nas, and every other mainstream rapper were doing their part. Even when the South started taking over, they still put out the gritty raw tracks and the club bangers.

But today, it seems like they just gave up, the airwaves are being dominated by trash.

There are eight rappers from the South in the Billboard Hip Hop charts (with the other 2 being Sean Paul and Diddy.) Sure you might hear a rapper like Busta Rhymes drop a track like “Touch It” , which repped all the boroughs in NY, (well, in the remix at least) but it seems like for every banger coming out of NY there are three generic tracks coming out of the South that take over.

I don’t know if NY has given up but it damn well seems like it.

But then again who can blame them?

With tracks talking about chicken noodle soup (oops, I forgot the soda on the side) coming out of NY and reaching an unexplainable level of popularity, I would’ve given up too.

Every few years, hip hop has an artist who has a tremendous impact on it and thus bringing his or her city/borough to the front line of the game. 50 cent, Eminem, Nas, Jay Z and others have done it over the last few years for the East Coast; Ludacris, T.I., and (as much as I hate to say) Lil’John, all have played major roles in the game.

So who’s going to do it this year?

Who’s going to save NY from falling off the map in 07?

It’s impossible to tell. With this uncertainty looming, NY needs a savior.

This is where Jay Z comes into play. Hip Hops Superman, he realizes NY is in desperate need, which is evident in the latest single from Kingdom Come by the same name.

However, there are many saying Jay is just coming back in the game to save his team (ROC), and many are saying his retirement was just a publicity stunt.

I say he’s stepping back in the ring to save NY.

to be continued
