Jay Z: Bouncin' to a fashionable beat.

by T.D.R.ROUSE

SATURDAY JANUARY 6, 2007

Who has that swagger? That swagger that says, “I’m flier than fly, so fly the bottom of my fresh kicks can’t get dirty on the pavement.” That swagger that lets everyone know,“My worst outfit could put your whole closet on injured reserve.” Well whoever has it, congratulations, but if you believe that you created this on your own than most likely you are sadly mistaken. Do you truly believe that the outfit you were wearing today is your own? You may have popped the tags, but what influenced you to sport those designs or that type of outfit? For those who do not know, turn on the FM tuner on the radio, or press play on that newly opened mp3 player from Christmas. For years, musicians have announced over their music what styles were hot and what not to be caught in, especially for hip-hop fans. In the last 3 and a half decades, emcees and Djs alike have influenced the fashionable trends of the urban and suburban communities within and outside of the United States.

When the hip-hop phenomenon became fully mainstream; it was RUN DMC and LL Cool J with the Kangol Hats, Adidas, the thick gold chains, and of course those track jackets for men and women alike. Back in the ‘80s, it was cool to freestyle, and party, and have fun, but you had to look fly to do it. You could not be part of a rapper’s crew and look like a bum, and I could imagine all the laughter someone would receive for break dancing with a hole in their hat. Fashion was everything, the latest trend was the code of the street, and a rapper’s word about the latest style was gold. Of course the way that people dressed was generally important throughout the other periods of the 1900s, but it became overly emphasized once hip-hop was pumped into the street’s cold veins.
See, wearing extravagant clothes was necessary, it meant that a rapper was more exclusive than anyone else. Thus, they would brag about how fly they were, and about their favorite clothing companies to add to their “bravado” on tracks, creating a cause and effect cycle that had everyone trying to outshine anyone else in their neighborhood and school. The dictation of what fashions were in and out has continued as hip-hop/rap has grown. If you do not believe me than just take a trip down memory lane; remember the early 1990s when people wore the N.W.A. “Jerry Curl” or Snoop Doggy Dogg’s famous perm?

Honestly, I would never have worn a plaid flannel shirt like Paul Bunyan, regardless if Biggie Smalls wore it or not, but that is just me. You could not tell all the ‘fellas on the block that though, because everyone looked as though they were going to the forest to cut down a few trees. Near the turn of the new millennium and about two years after jerseys ran ramped and rappers boasted about all the jerseys they had in their closet. Brooklyn native rapper Fabolous has proclaimed on a few tracks about his sponsorship with Mitchel & Ness Co., a jersey company which specializes in old-school jerseys. Style just does not surround just clothes anymore, it has evolved, yes, evolved, into cars, jewelry, and dare I say it, which type of business or businesses you own.

The biggest overseer of this movement from hip-hop’s point of view has got to be Jay-Z. I call Mr. Carter (Jay-Z) the trend setter/brand ender. With a few lines, Jay-Z has single handedly either sparked or crashed some of this last decade’s biggest trends. I remember him hyping up the alcoholic substance Cristal and destroying the image of the 4.0 Range Rover in the track,
Imaginary Player, from the album “The Life And Times of Shawn Carter Volume 1.”

Jay Z- Imaginary Players:

After what he said on the track, Show You How To Do This, from Blueprint 2, the BMW X5 should have been burned at the chassis in any neighborhood. On the Black Album he gave all men a reason to leave the jerseys on the court and dress somewhat more sophisticated, and on the track What More Can I Say he boasted the epitome of freshness with this line, “…One life to live, I can’t let a day go, by without me being fly, fresh to death, head to toe ‘til the day I rest. And I don’t wear jerseys I’m 30 plus…” After the first time hearing this line I could not wait to hear it over and over. I wore it out more than 3 generation old hand-me-downs, so I know that this line caught massive attention from fashion enthusiasts.

Jay Z- Show You How:

Jay Z- What More Can I say:

From sneakers, to Roc-A-Fella clothing, to even his own brand of vodka, Jay-Z used word-of-mouth through his music to not only sell his own products, but dictate which products and clothing our communities should or should not use. Can Bill Gates or Warren Buffett do the same? Of course not, this is what emphasizes the power of hip-hop’s influence even more. We would much rather listen to the cool, rich man rather than the wealthy men who seem to get their clothes designed by the developers of the first Xbox game console. So after all of that please keep in mind when it comes to fashion and style, the majority of us hip-hop listeners hang on to an artist’s every word, just like how our clothes hang in closets. We are easily handled, but one tug or pull could either damage our image or have us looking quite radiant.
