Is hip hop really dead? If so what killed it?

by AMJ1227

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 20, 2007

Who is to blame you might ask? The answer would be All of us. Everyone who has accepted what is now considered good music by hip hop’s standards has participated in the murder of hip hop. We all have fallen into that warped society that creates drama and controversy over everything. I asked myself who do I listen to the most these days, and I found that I am just as guilty as all of you. I looked at my most played music on itunes found B.G., Jeezy, Swisha House, T.I., and a host of others who I really would not consider lyricist. These current big names just would not hold up amongst hip hop’s all time elite.

I took time to myself, re-evaluating what hip hop meant to me and what it should mean to a plethora of others. I dug deep into my collection, resurfacing some of the classics in order to find what changed to make hip hop what it is today. In my opinion, street credibility is main culprit for the decline in hip hop quality. The turning point was When it became more important to be a drug dealer and a gangster than to actually have lyrical talent.

In doing my research, I found that I had been criticizing rappers for all the wrong reasons. I have largely been one of the leaders on this website who criticized rappers for not keeping it real or not living their lives as they do in their music. Yes one should be honest and keep in touch with where one came from, but it should not be the determining factor of the rappers worth.

The premium placed on street credibility is what has brought the game to where it is today. Yes there were gangster rappers in the 80s and 90s, however they were not given a pass based upon their lives prior to their music. Case in point, Young Jeezy and B.G. get, without a shadow of a doubt, more credit then they deserve as hip hop artist because of how the relate to the “Street Life”.

One can not argue that hip hop has lost its original form. Today, rap generates more money then ever imagined. Rappers are CEOs of clothing labels, alcohol distribution companies, record labels, and an abundance of other ventures that generates millions. When hip hop was in its most purest and most original form, the business aspect was not nearly as complex and profitable as it is today. So when you consider the profit margin, the street credibility, and the ever lasting economic struggles in urban communities in relation with the subject of distribution of narcotics on wax, you must admit that hip hop has taken a turn for the worst. I like to look at it like hip hop died and rap was born. Hip hop is about true lyrical substance and telling a story in reality. Rap always seems to have a gimmick or something else to take away from the ability to spit HOT FIYAH!(JOKESTA).

In closing, if hip hop has died then we are all to blame for it, because last I checked, Young Jeezy, B.G., T.I., Lil Wayne all have went platinum.

For the record, I am a huge fan of T.I., Jeezy, and B.G. I just have come to the realization that they are not the artist that hip hop had in mind as some of it’s most popular providers of that sound we all crave.

Take this food for thought before you comment!

all them south niggaz suck when it comes to lyrics, u cant throw on ti 10 years from now n say that record was an impact on my life then n my life now same wit lil wayne jeezy and young joc and whoeva else they think is nice in the south...lil wayne doesnt have a song that compares to juicy feelin it i get around the world is yours if i ruled the world paid in full etc. nobody from the south has that thats wut they lack thats why hip hop is dead....they make songs for now not for the long term...party songs wont last but for the summer, i listened to the king album the other day and was like damn it doesnt have that same impact from the first time i heard it or the summer it came out, just doesnt. then i threw on illmatic it was written ready to die paid in full great adventures of slick rick doggystyle and still has me in the mood like damn this album is a classic, u dig my drift. if not then u dont understand music.

Damn AMJ1227, when it so easy to blame the south, you had to bring it back to us,the listeners, the customers, the only people who can keep Hip Hop alive.Yes, it really is all our fought, and myself included.Eevn though I stop buying the crap music when I was a teen, every now in then, I find myself listen to some complete trash artist garbage ass songs, RichBoy for instant.I guess going out and buying Jay-Z's and Nas album isn't enough to keep good Hip Hop alive. We as true Hip Hop heads need to support more lyrical and intelligent rappers such as Lupe Fiasco and Papoose.Supporting the greats is good, but if we don't show that same kind of support to the new and talented dudes, Hip Hop will surely die.Street credibility shouldn't trump talent, the Cold Crush brothers had street cred, but would any true Hip Hop head remember them if they weren't so sick on the mic and turntables.

I was watching Krush Groove a few hours ago, watching that movie really remind you on how Hip Hop has changed.

I'm so sick of these So Called Writers on every website talking about the SAME THING! Why don't THE WHOLE EAST COAST just look in the mirror for a change and admit that they just don't support those GREAT Artist. Since you mentioned "Platinum", Nas sold 3k more than Jeezy but now Jeezy is 200k ahead!..Does the East just bootleg more than anywhere else and don't support Great artist like Nas but rather blame others? How much more Original can artist be when you have 10x more rappers than before. When the South did come with something different, the East shot it down. Plus we all speak the same Language. Remember the South wasn't mainstream and wasn't allow to be for a long time. Everyone from the South can't sound like "Jay-Z" or whoever.

The South isn't supporting the East like they have in the past because of the disrespect. Ghost Face said "F the East Coast" and flopped twice in 1 year but you can't blame the South for that. So the East should just keep doing their thing because they didn't worry about the South back then, they shouldn't worry now!

Those Born 1930-1979!

TO ALL THE KIDS
WHO SURVIVED the
1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we
rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and

NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because .

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day.

And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,

made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them . . . CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives

for our own good

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,"Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us....go ahead and delete this.
For the rest of us.....pass this on.

I dont buy the fact that a lot of the comments above say that the south killed hip hop. Our music been this way every since southern rap came about. "The Streets" that's what we are and thats what we know.

I honestly dont believe that this dude "Numba1NasFan" is from da south, because he would actually understand that this music has meaning to us and years from now it will still sound like good music

I personally dont listen to "Snap Music" but check this out:

T.I, Lil Wayne, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Jeezy, Luda, B.G, and Rick Ross

These artists are currently on top of southern hip hop and are some of todays most listened to artists. Now check this list out:

UGK, Scarface, Geto Boys, 3-6 Mafia, Juvenile, 8 Ball & MJG, Too Short, and Outkast

These are the rappers that todays southern artists grew up listening to. Their music is similar and when they were doing it hip hop was very alive. So how can you say todays southern artists are what is killing hip hop when it has been this way forever they are just doing what was good music to them 10-15 years ago and what will be good music 10-15 years in the future.

Good piece AMJ... I don't ever buy music that I believe doesn't merit encouragement. Period. I understand what you were saying with the mass majority buying whatever is hot and trust me I have plenty of friends that do this... but the fact that you included everyone of us as the reason Hip Hop is dying kind of got under my skin. I believe that people will always buy what makes them move because, as you all can see, thats whats popular now and thats always been whats popular. If you don't really love music with a message then thats not whats going to appeal to you and Its rare to find a person, at least in my experience, who really loves music with a message... and not just any type of message, a message from an urban perspective.

I'll admit that at first I thought Hip Hop was dying as well. But then I realized that you can hate on whats going on for the general state of Hip Hop as much as you want but its not going to change the fact that the bubble gum, corporate manufactured stuff is going to sell. There's a reason its corporate influenced.. these dudes (Corporate Suits) aren't going to invest in it if they aren't going to see a return... But I digress.. I actually think this is good for the audience of lyrical Hip Hop... This is going to separate the two types of Hip Hop fans.. Don't you agree?

I aint gonna lie I think some of the southern music is trash, but so is some NY music, but you got to give artists like TI, Wayne, Cham, and Ludacris props cause they do make good music and they made good music when there was no body else dropping without a dance song.

It is tough to get over that wayne thing aint it cause I aint over it either. I'm thinking bout changing my avatar picture right now cause that but if charles barkley can kiss a old man on the lips on national television and Shaq can kiss T Mac then I guess its okay for wayne to greet his father figure with a kiss.

Man I dont know....lol....im getting off the subject, but I guess it was kind of blown out of proportion though (if that's possible.

But hip hop is alive and well to me and im happy right now...Peace

I fuck the entire joke up, not just that one word, so i'm going to leave it alone.

I aint gonna lie I think some of the southern music is trash, but so is some NY music, but you got to give artists like TI, Wayne, Cham, and Ludacris props cause they do make good music and they made good music when there was no body else dropping without a dance song.

You mean the majority of southern artist are trash, not some. And since we are talking about the good music from southern artist, here a verse of that good music from T.I's King album, which some dudes say is a clasic.

See me in your city sittin pretty know I'm shinin dog
Ridin with a couple Latin broads and a china doll
And you know how we ball
Riding in shiny cars
Walk in designer malls
Buy everything he saw
You know about me dog
Don't talk about me dog
And if you doubt me dog
You better out me dog
I'm throwed off slightly bro
Don't wanna fight me bro
I'm fast as lightening bro
You better use your Nike's bro
Know you don't like me cause
Your bitch most likely does
She see me on them dubs
In front of every club
I be on dro I'm buzzed
Gave every hoe a hug
Niggaz don't show me mugs
Cause you don't know me cuz

His entire album is like this, alot of car talk, tough talk, sex talk, and more car talk.

Hip hop is not dead; you can’t expect something to stay the same for a long period of time. Time has changed and so does the music. If hip hop is dead, why don’t people go back a listen to all the classic albums that were put out? Can’t anybody be Rakim, Nas, or Jay Z, and the south is not killing hip hop. My point is everything changes over time. 10 years from now kids from this generation will be saying hip hop has changed from what is being played now. All the legends from the 80’s didn’t say the artist in the 90’s killed hip hop, and there was a big difference in lyrical and subject content.

That verse is hot, to someone from the south, thats what you not gettin Dre. Most of the niggas I know in the streets love that type of music. Thats what we are down here and thats what we live. How can you disrespect that.

And as far as you saying that most of the south music is trash, thats crazy and you know it. If it's trash why do we got NY niggas puttin out southern records (MIMS)?

The South just so happened 2 be on top when it died.......If you think about it, hip hop changed after the 50 droppped GRODT....after him i feel people where waiting for another sensation....but what did we get? nuthin really was close to the impact that album had on evrywun...nuthin much happened after that, albums still dropped evrything was well till somewhere around 2003 when i moved from New Jersey 2 Florida.....anybody remember Lil' Jon and Get Low? It was huge down here and evryone was going crazy over the new style of muzik....Crunk? People started to notice the money you can make saying the same thing over and over....that started getting alittle boring so what do u do next? hot beats started comin out wit no lyrical talent...people still enjoyed at clubs nd shit nd then it got out of hand.....thats all this generation (i speak from experience im only 16) wants 2 do iz party....nd at a party or club i dont think they would want 2 here something like Many Men-50 Cent or Either-Nas or any of Ice Cube, Game, Rakim, Mos Def, Common, the list goes on forever......its it about, beats that make u dance at a party..Snap Muzik for example...it was made for dancing...Shake That Laffy Taffy? Lean Wit it? that iz all tellin u 2 dance nd since evryone embraces it as a form of Hip Hop then it has become part of the muzik industry...plus, it make alot of money so on the radio thats all you will evr here along with the ocasionally RnB song

Hip Hop aint dead, it just need a break from the same old routine. In my opinion, people who say that is not disrespecting the south cuz we all came from the south and that is reflected in the music. Different slang and ways to do thangs but its all the same. Hip hop is just getting stagnant. People saying and doing the same shit, even the slang is the same. You a hustla, killa, thug or someone taking part in something illegal. Hip hop is music and people have gotten away from that. Hip hop will never die cuz too many WHITE PEOPLE are making too much money from it. And the south is not the only region ruling hip hop. Betta kno that!!!!

AMJ,

"Who is to blame you might ask? The answer would be All of us. Everyone who has accepted what is now considered good music by hip hop’s standards has participated in the murder of hip hop. We all have fallen into that warped society that creates drama and controversy over everything. I asked myself who do I listen to the most these days, and I found that I am just as guilty as all of you."

FUCK OUTTA HERE. I DON'T LISTEN TO THAT DOWNSOUTH BULLSHIT. East Coast all day. Period. 1.

I listen to all east coast rappers who were hot in the 90s and all their classic shit that STILL TO THIS DAY MASHES anything put out now. Period. I'm currently bangin' the SCORE in my whip as we speak. Don't say all of us. I'VE NEVER PURCHASED A DOWN SOUTH RAP ALBUM EXCEPT 4 Outkast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (I actually think I ordered that on 1 of those 6 cds for $1 typa joons they used to do in the mags) and Aquemini (I KNOW i bought it cause it got 5 mics) and Scarface's The Fix (also got 5). I swear 2 God on my life.

Other than Outkast, and honestly I'm startin' to like Luda a little (Run AWAY LOVE has me feelin' emotional), and Scarface, I really could care less about the South, the Midwest (except for Em), and the West.

Love to the East: Nas, Jay-Z, Capone -N- Noreaga, Mobb Deep (90s), AZ, the Roots, the Lox, Boot Camp Clik, the Wu-Tang Clan, Jeru, A+, Keith Murray, Redman, EPMD, Public Enemy, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Salt -N- Pepa, the Juice Crew, BDP, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Run-DMC, LL, Gang Starr, Cam, Ma$e Murda, Lost Boyz, Naughty By Nature, the Fugees, Fox, Kim, Terror Squad when Big Pun was alive, B. Sieg & Free, and all the old school artists from NY. R.I.P. to Notorious B.I.G., Big L, Big Pun, Freaky Tah (hype man), Jam Master Jay, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Scott La Rock, and anyone I forgot.

p.s. I got love for people or groups not from the east: Bone (1st 2 albums), Dre, Em, Kast, Face, Luda (lately; he's gettin' better), Xzibit (is okay, though i've never heard an Xzibit album, just about 4 or 5 tracks), Cube (on the movie tip ... Westside Connection: ass), and really, that's all I can think of off the toppa my head.

BUT DON'T SAY IT WAS ALL OF US, CAUSE I SUPPORT THE EAST. JUST CAN'T SAY THE SAME FOR EVERY1 ELSE.

Let me start off by saying AMJ good shit once again! I have not looked at any of the comments as of yet so I may repeat something someone has already stated.

Hip Hop has taken a serious turn for the worst. It's not the 1st time it has happened.

The problem I'm seeing is that anyone that is considered hot seems to spawn multiple copy cat acts. The originality is gone. It reminds me of when The Real World came on MTV the 1st time and now every other show is a reality based show. There was a time for every gangsta rapper you had conscious rapper. For every conscious rapper you had a party rapper. It was some form of balance between them and each could exsist alongside the other. Those days are gone!!! Now it's snap music or gangsta shit. A few conscious cats still exist but not nearly enough. Lyrics don't sell. Your image sells records.

I have more to say on this. Just cant get all my thoughts together.

KING...And as far as you saying that most of the south music is trash, thats crazy and you know it. If it's trash why do we got NY niggas puttin out southern records (MIMS)?

NY niggas is puttin out southern records right now not cuz they hot but cuz unfortuanly thats the only way to eat....see what the south did (excludin face mob, outkast etc...)is they made it uncool to rap about something thats relevant.. nowadays if a nigga from ny tries to do something cultural n his name aint jay z nas etc..dude better come extra hard(pause).. n in this present day extra hard(pause) dont cut it for a ny rapper if his name aint known... 4 example papoose put out a alphabetical slaughter music video ( which i cant think of a single south cat who has the brain power 4 that)n that joint dont get no air play cuz aint no opportunity to "snap your finger" between the beats n then mims puts of a song that i seriously dont remember the name as im typing n i dont wanna stop lol...which has no lyrical contenet whats so ever n he pose to be from ny? another example is grafh if yall herd of him he pose 2 be one of them young rappers from ny who heavy on the mix tape circuit... but what he do? as soon as he get a big break he puts out a myspace song with a southern beat i aint knockin sothern beats but just shpwin yall how niggas will even go outside they culter just to eat.. instead of tryin to help bring back ur own culter... you gon rep. somethign that aint you
