Hip Hop's Greatest Albums!
by on January 19th, 2007
When talking about the greatest hip hop albums of all time record sales really don’t matter. We are talking hip hop classics, which have been respected, and lasted through the test of time. We are talking quality music you can put into your stereo and not press another button. Albums that once you listen to you will not want to hear anything else. There have been a plethora of great albums made in hip hop; however there can only be 5. Therefore if your favorite album is not on MY list just argue why you think it should be considered one of the greatest albums. The categories i am basing my list on is Lyrics, production, guest features, substance, versatility, consistency, and has the album withstood the test of time. Another thing that everyone should consider it doesn’t take the greatest rapper of all time to make a hip hop classic. As mentioned in the greatest rapper debate rap has prospered all over so everyone’s list should have music from all over not just one section of U.S.
5. The Predator (Ice Cube)
A surprise to some, but not to those who have been in love with hip hop from day one. The once N.W.A member Ice cube went off to do his own thing with the legendary Predator album. You talk about ahead of his time; Ice Cube came with the most versatile album I have ever heard. Consisting of that West coast flow mixed with some east coast flavor gives Cube the variety every classic album should have. Cube opened the doors for a lot of gangster rappers while raging his feelings on a variety of topics on this classic album. He spoke of politics, struggles, drugs, and relationships. He even had a smash hit with Today was a Good day, at one point we all was walking around saying “I aint even have to use my AK, I gotta say it was a good day”, or how about “you know im trouble, last week F*D around and got a triple double” LOL. The Predator album, released in 1992 was so versatile you could pop it in today and still blast it and not sound out dated. Lol. Cube really laid the foundation down on this album, he came with the slow flow and the fast flow, he gave you power with the controversial subjects, and he even mellowed you out with the ever popular It was a good day. This belongs in your collection if you consider yourself a true hip hop head.
4. The Untouchable (Scarface)
I am sure this was expected in a list by AMJ himself…lol. However you cannot deny Mr. Scarface his place in history with this album. The album came with that serious flow; you could feel the anger, the pain or whatever emotion he was expressing in each track. The Untouchable had not one wasted track, every single track has a purpose, and every single track gave you a feeling of wanting more. For all the Pac fans out there you had to love the single off The Untouchable, which was Smile. When you listen to that track you actually can feel Face and Pac’s pain with every single word. Although I have never been the biggest Pac fan after listening to this track I had to reconsider every thing I have ever said about Pac. He came with that heat, not so much in a lyrical fashion, but with a serious message. On The Untouchable all subjects were touch as should be on a classic album. My favorite track on the album is “YA MONEY FOR YA LIFE”, the production and lyrics make that one of the greatest single tracks of all time in my opinion. Say what you want about record sales, and popularity, but this is an album that should always be included when discussing hip hop’s elite albums.
NUMBER 3 FEATURES A TIE.
3. Reasonable Doubt (Jay-Z)
Obviously this could have EASILY been my number one choice, however i am not blinded by the fact Jay is my favorite rapper.LOL. This album came at a time where hip hop needed to be refreshed, and Jay came with heat on every track. Jay’s flow was defined with Reasonable Doubt. The way his flow meshed with each and every beat perfectly can only be said for FEW others. With tracks like twenty two two’s, Can I Live, and Friend or Foe is where Jay-z supremacy was born. Each song had its own concept, yet they all came together to form one concept on the CD. Jay also gave every hip hop head a dose of one of the most legendary collaboration with the track Brooklyn’s Finest. Without doubt everyone respects Jay, and Big as two of the games greatest and you get that electric flow from both on this defining track. Without question this album belongs on any list of hip hop’s greatest albums
3. Ready To Die (Notorious B.I.G.)
Without question this is one of the most respected albums of all time. Without experience in making a previous CD Biggie came with one of the greatest albums of all time. His mentioning of selling drugs, robbing, and surviving were definitely ahead of its time. Biggie had a way of making you visualize everything he said, almost everything he said you believed with no questions asked. He told a story in a way that put fear in your heart. He had a way of telling a story like it was a movie. His production backed by his supreme lyrical content made this album one of the greatest of all time. Although it is not my number 1 choice you can always argue it belongs on top of any list of hip hop best albums. Tracks like Warning, Ready to Die, and Unbelievable consistently deliver one of the most lyrical, and gangster albums of all time. We all wish his life would not have been tragically cut short so we could have had more of the same from one of the games greatest. If you have any question on anything I was talking about on his album just listen to the track Unbelievable, you will be hard pressed to find a track that mastered the art of production and lyrical assault like Unbelievable. That beat followed by the lyrical assistance of B.I.G. is easily one of the single most lyrical tracks I have ever listened too. He even had two of the hottest singles of all time, Juicy, and One more chance, we all was bouncing to sounds of Biggies hottest singles. BIGGIE BIGGIE GIMME ONE MORE CHANCE, BIGGIE BIGGIE GIMME ONE MORE CHANCE! Or how bout “YOU NEVER THOUGHT HIP HOP WOULD TAKE IT THIS FAR, NOW IM IN THE LIME LIGHT CUS I RHYME TIGHT, TIME TO GET PAID BLOW UP LIKE THE WORLD TRADE”....lol. This album will be in the rock and roll hall of fame soon as it’s eligible. Legend without question.
2. Follow the Leader (Eric B. & Rakim)
Let me tell you one thing, if you have never listened to Follow the Leader, or you have no clue about the history of Eric B. & Rakim you can not call yourself a true hip hop head. My Uncle Mike who introduced me to hip hop used this cd to lay the foundation on what a true hip hop cd is. A real dj, and a real Lyricist. When you consider what this album embodies you have to appreciate the true essence of this album. The album delivered a message, it delivered soul through beats, and it put you in a zone in which you became a fiend…..A Microphone Fiend. The CD was even used in one of the first major hip hop movies…Juice. Follow the Leader was a track that will live in hip hop eternally.
1. Illmatic (Nas)
This may be a surprise because some think i am bias to Jay-z, or Scarface, but its no surprise to anyone who really loves hip hop. This was the album that did it for me. The games best story teller, one of the games best lyricists came with the games single best effort. Hip Hop in its truest form, he delivered one of the most original Lp’s this game has ever seen. Nas did not have to have 22 tracks on this album; he gave you everything you needed in just 10 of the most powerful tracks. He had hood anthems, he had street tales, and he had everything you could ask for in just 10 tracks. One of the most respected and copied albums of all time without question belong at the top. Sure some will argue, but I will bet if you ask any rapper, producer or any person involved with hip hop to name their top 5 albums and in 99% of the responses Illmatic will fall somewhere in the top 5. Lyrically Ny State of Mind might be in the top 3 of greatest single tracks. Production and lyrics are at its finest with the 1994 classic release by God’s son. The album takes you from angry to mellow, with the variety he displays on the album. Nas without question cemented his place in hip hop supremacy with the greatest album of all time.
Now of course many will crucify my opinion, for not having any of Pac’s albums, or any Lil Wayne albums (That’s a Joke). Please understand I wanted to put so many more, however it’s just a top 5, and I cheated by putting a tie for 3rd place. However I will say this, after writing this I’m ashamed for not having The Chronic, and Doggystyle in this list, because for me those two albums opened my eyes to a whole other brand of hip hop. Other albums I am ashamed I couldn’t fit on my list was Wu Forever, Aquemini, Blueprint, All Eyez On ME, The Diary, and Resurrection by Common. Of course there are more but those are the first to come to mind.

Mid west nigga wont b able to do nothing but kiddy songs n dance songs 4 hur
East coast nigga claimin he ballin but he not so he doesn’t sell then says Hip Hop Is Dead lmao
Down south keeps it creative n fresh like how hip hop is suppose to be
demo5in5, you are the funniest dude on this site.Don’t you mean, down south raps is dumb and coonish, how hip hop should never be.Southern raps is the most unintelligent form of Hip Hop in America,if not the world. The majority of southern rappers aren’t creative enough to rhyme, with many others using basic rhyming techniques.Add in the constant use of the same or similar beats, the poor grammar which makes it hard to understand what they are saying, and the all around copying of EastCoast style and essence, makes your post sound just like your rap scene, dumb.

I kno every1 is gonna go crazy when they see eminem on there but dont hate if u listened to that whole album u kno that is 1 of the sickest albums of all time touching on a lot of controversial topics and giving u something to get amped EM is 1 of the most versatile rappers
-Ready To Die
even 2 this mufuckin day i still hear that shit, and i feel the exact same way biggie does. he came so gangsta wit it…suicidal thoughts is the realest shit on there
-Blueprint
jigga literally was miles ahead of everybody wit this shit…from the swag to his grandaddy-in-the-rockin chair-type flow, to the fuckin beats….CLASSIC. that really was the blueprint to a classic. he had everything from club bangers to hood stories to soul-searchin joints, nasty dis, nigga please.
-Aquemini
outkast always been the craziest mufuckas in tha biz…they aint scared of shit when it come to muzic…they aint tha best rappers but they tha most creative…this wasnt even a rap album, it was like country, jazz, funk, r&b all rolled into some hood ass slick-soundin shit…plus they country twang on they voices tripped a nigga out. gnarls barkleys bitch asses got they inspiration from these niggaz
-I Am(Nas)
i personally think this was nas nastiest album….he came wit concepts of the meatrack, the beats was on point and he had hits…that fuck tha government track was vicious, dr. knockboots was sick…ny state of mind 2, im from tha ’go so i grew up listenin to west, east, and souf shit so this was some o tha slickest shit from tha east i heard
-I got a tie for tha other two…
-Eminem Show
I dont follow eminem like a stan but me bein a hood nigga, knowin he white, an still b impressed is crazy….dude is hotter than most o these out an niggaz seem to forget that. i remember a time when jay at his best couldnt touch dude. this album trip me out because he talk about his fucked up ass life but he talk about his fuck-you mentality which i can relate to….but to put in big ass words and crazy words schemes for u 2 believe him and laugh at the same time is crazy. theres very few niggaz who can make u feel 4 emotions at once with just one line. em can.
-All eyez on me
pac did somethin aint nobody did b4 or since. see into his future. this album was weird 2 me cuz he was almost crazy 4 real. an he let tha shit show on his album… u could hear he did rush it by tha adlibs n shit but that add to what he was tryin 2 let mufuckas know about him n what he was about….i aint tha biggest pac fan, but i respect a real nigga….he talked about shit i been thinkin bout on tha bus or while im gettin drunk n shit…real nigga shit.

-Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full was BETTER than Follow the Leader
-Scarface’s The Diary AND The Fix were BOTH BETTER than The Untouchable
-Biggie’s Ready To Die was SUPERIOR to Reasonable Doubt, I like Jay-Z and all and RD belongs in the top ten, but it’s not as good as RTD.
-Ice Cube’s Amerikkka’s Most Wanted AND Death Certificate were BOTH BETTER than The Predator
You’re entitled to your opinion of course, but that’s mine.
My top 10 of all time is….
10-2Pac- Me Against The World (much deeper and less filler than All Eyez On Me)

Aww man Lil Wayne is a fad not a legend
These comments just proves how irrelevant 2Pac can be! lol Aww man no disrespect but he had hitz never whole albums that were great! None of 2Pac albums I can listen all the way through! It’s impossible!
But you can listen to Missy Elliot all the way through. I can’t listen to 1 song from Missy all the way through. Maybe if it was just instrumentals.

1.ALL EYEZ ON ME Tupac Amaru Shakur
the reason i mention all eyes on me because it was the first ever hip hop Double Disc
it set a milestone for hiphop pac was on of the first to go multi platinum in the same year. But thats beside the point he had everybody on the same album he repped the west on the album and still had other peeps from the other side like method man
and red man. album is not only THE best album. its the greatest classic.
Also i do understand why the list is takes in account the cultural impact the artist added to the industry. Yes DMX is gimmicky, commerical, and lacks substance compared to the likes of NAZ and Biggie, but Flesh of My Flesh, tack for track, matches up wit any on the list!!!
10-2Pac- Me Against The World (much deeper and less filler than All Eyez On Me)

Notorious B.I.G.- Ready to Die—- Instant classic from the time the tape went in the deck it was melting the speakers…
Raekwon- Only built for Cuban Links—- I’m a huge Wu Fan so this is definitely a classic to me… “the purple tape” I don’t give a damn where you from, you put in any Clan tape, cd, whatever… these cats were way to far ahead of their time…
Method Man-Tical—- I said I was a Wu fan damn it… Instant classic, as a matter of fact it’s still in rotation… listen again if you need to, quite possibly some of the best work ever done…
Dr. Dre- The Chronic—- The BEST produced album I’ve ever heard in life.
Last but not least, and this should have been more like top ten by the way…………………………………………………………………….. ………….. I have to say….
Tupac Shakur-All Eyez on Me—- This album was for real niggas, for real people, going through real shit, with real problems and real resolutions. In my opinion Pac always is gonna be in the top 5 of any Greatest of All Time…. If he was still around it would be a lot of wack mufuckas out of the game as well, so love’em or hate’em he was and is one of the greatest of all time.
2. Immortal Technique – Revolutionery Vol1,Vol2

u aint gotta agree with me but das my list…i cudnt leave Pac out…but I still bang the Cronic 2001 b4 All Eyes on Me nd same with Doctors Advocate….
2) Illmatic: Nas
3) Ready 2 Die: B.I.G.
4) Paid In Full: Eric B. & Rakim
5) All Eyez On Me: 2Pac
I feel these are the 5 greatest albums ever, not because of who made the albums, but because of what those albums did for Hip-Hop. I don’t think we had a classic since The Black Album.
i personally think it may not be the best lyrically, although it is really good..
every single song on that cd, you can put on repeat and just bump for hours upon hours.
every song on that cd is a classic
here is the real list…
1. Tupac – All Eyez On Me
2. Eazy E – Eazy-Duz-it
3. Dr. Dre – The Chronic (original)
4. Eminem – Marshall Mathers Lp
5. Cypress Hill – Black Sunday
Fuck Yall and Im From the South
6. Brotha Lynch Hung – Season Of Da Siccness
we are talkin all time and you faggs talkin bout nas wu tang and Ice cube?
These albums on my list – you can jam the whole Cds and everysong is a hit.
1. Chronic 2001-Dr. Dre
2. Marshall Mathers LP- Eminem
3. Revolutionary Vol.2-Immortal Technique
4. Ready to Die- Biggie
5. All eyes On Me- 2pac
6. Get Rich or Die Tryin- 50 Cent
Revolutionary Vol 2 never gets mentioned among the best but it should. Listen to it. However much people hate on 50 you cant deny that album. I don’t like him at all but that one album was ridiculous. Track for track. To me Chronic 2001 is hands down the best hip hop album of all time. And the list has nothing to with who best rappper is and that shouldn’t be taken into account in other peoples list. This aint about that. So people shouldn’t say shit like “you cant have 2pac off the list”.
4. ATLiens – Outkast – This marked the transformation of Dre and Antwan, young niggaz straight out of high school, pimpin and spittin flames, to the musical entreprenuers that are Andre 3000 and Big Boi. Some of the most thought provoking hip-hop tracks in history were all compiled together onto this one album. The follow up, Aquemini, was pretty close too.
3. 36 Chambers – Wu Tang Clan – Best album ever made in somebody’s basement hands down. It wasn’t the concepts of the album, but the raw energy in each and every beat and emcee spitting on those tracks that made this complete. East Coast, grimey hip-hop at its finest.
2. Illmatic – Nas – I dont think it’s possible we will ever hear a compilation of lyrical domination like this on one album ever again. Somewhat sloppy song concepts and hooks held this back in my mind, but if it’s number 2, just imagine how muc that says for Nas’ rap skills.
1. Reasonable Doubt – Jay-Z – No bias here. Perfect combination of lyrics, beats, concepts and just an overall “aura” that surrounds each and every track. The few features that are on this album are unforgettable and Jay-Z shines brighter than the Sun on his own.
10.Straight Outta Compton By N.W.A – Without this cd there would have been no Pac no Big and so on. I respect the work that Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E , Mc Ren & Dj Yella put in this cd, so nuber 10 is a fair place for the compton mc’s!
09.Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg – Truly 1 of the best West Coast Cd’s ever. His funky & cool bars mixed up with Death Row’s finest beats give’s us a perfect picture of the G-Funk scene. Snoop Dogg made a lot of good cd’s but, in my eyes he could never top his first cd, Doggystyle.
08.The Chronic by Dr. Dre – Eaven though Dre isn’t really a rapper he created a master piece with this album. Eaven though he dissed the West Coast veteran Eazy-E more than once on this cd, he what a talented person he is. What also made this a classic was Snoop Dogg, because he was featured on a lot of tracks on The Chronic.
07.Paid In Full by Eric B. & Rakim – MTV called this the best Hip-Hop cd of all time, which could be correct. The back then young Rakim gives Hip-Hop a totally new face with his lyrics that where ahead of they’re time. Eric B. shows us what being a Dj is all about, expecially on songs like “Eric B. Is On The Cut”.
06.Reasonable Doubt by Jay-Z – Shit! Jigga is just a straight up hustler! All I can Say about this is: You Can’t Knock The Hustle!
05.All Eyez On Me by 2Pac – Some People Say Tupac Shakur is the best rapper ever, now I can agree with that. There are not a lot of rappers that get better from lp to lp. 2pac introduces his listeners to a Thug Life!
04.The 18Th Letter by Rakim – HAHAHAHA Rakim is a genius, a can’t believe his methaphors xD, it’s crazy his punchlines his rhythm’ , in my eyes Rakim is the G.O.A.T.!
03.Ready 2 Die by The Notorious B.I.G. – Biggie is simply great, “Juicy” had me feelin’ like I was from New York. I can’t forget to mention, that his thought of death facinated me. I will always luv Big Poppa!
02.Illmatic by Nas – Ohh my God! Nas made me smell the Queens Bridge on this Record! Nas made a legendary cd with this , but he could never again created somethin like this so he’s only my 5th favorite Mc.
01.The Documentary by THE GAME – Like Game Said on his L.A.X. cd , his 1st Album sended me life! This is the Hip-Hop Lp that I heard the most , the Lp that made me study Hip-Hop and the Hip-Hop Lp that made Game my favorite rapper!
