Hip Hop is alive, fck what you heard.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 21, 2006

Hip Hop Is Dead

It isn’t quite like me to sit here and get angry at all the fans, artists, and critics saying Hip Hop is dead. I understand everyone has their own opinion and all that nonsense but cammon, enough is enough! I hope by now you all get it that when Nas said Hip Hop is dead he didn’t actually mean it.It’s a gimmick,(ironically from a Rapper that prides himself in not using gimmicks to sell) It’s a publicity stunt that took on a life of it’s own. Like any other rapper starting a beef to sell records, Nas chose to start a beef with the genre as a whole, and you all fell for it. He laid the bait and everyone bit.

Why didn’t anyone say anything about Hip Hop before Nas decided to do so?

What’s happening here is just a fad. A Phase that’ll pass us before we realize it. It’s a case of stannism. There are entirely too many followers in Hip Hop and not enough leaders. Due to the fact that alot of hip hop fans are mindless dummies who can’t think for themselves, it’s gotten entirely too easy to influence them by going against the grain. Example, G-unit and Game. Do you remember when Game debuted on G-unit?, They were the move, the were on top, there was NO ONE hating. Then Game said “G-Unot” and all the fans he gained through the G-Unit exposure followed along. It pains me to say it but a good portion of Hip Hop is based on fads. You as the listeners have a responsibility to make up your own minds about shit and yet you just follow along like idiots. Another example, Eminem Vs. Benzino; now I understand Benzino did it to himself but what Hip Hop magazine were you reading before Eminem destroyed him on the tracks?..What magazine are you reading now?..odds are XXL magazine or King. It’s the bandwagon effect, subliminal peer pressure, and it’ll keep happening until you’re able to make up your own mind.

What’s happening now

Now all you hear is “hip hop is dead” “hip hop is dead” “the South is killing hip hop” which is absolute bullshit. If I remember correctly, Hip Hop has always had more than one sound to it. Hip Hop has never been defined by one thing, one location,or one person. Many say Hip Hop is a life style, a way of living, dressing, etc. Alot argue hip hop is nothing more than music. I say, hip hop is what you make it. Like Mos Def said, we are hip hop. We make it what it is. So of course if you have the idea in your head that Hip Hop is dying, you’re going to start noticing a lack of creativity or originality in music and try to pin point the cause; and since the ones in the spot light right now are artists from the south, you’ll automatically assume its their fault.

It’s by far their fault, in actuality, it’s your fault. If you’re one of those that judge an artist by their numbers then you can probably say it’s music piracy’s fault, Hip Hop ain’t dead, It lives on the internet. But you can not say, it’s the south. They’re making music in a different fashion, they are making their music. Hip Hop as a whole is thriving right now, you see it embedded into everything. Movies, Books, Commercials, Cartoons, Video games, you name it, its there. So how is it dying?

Then there’s always the argument that “Lyrical Hip Hop” is dying. Just because you don’t hear it on the radio, doesn’t mean its dying. When you stop letting people dictate what you hear, you’ll realize that hip hop is alive and doing very well. This has happened many times in the past with many music genres and it’s bound to happen again. It’s really up to you as a reader, artist, listener, or fan to make of it what you will.

Amen. Nas' album is easily the best of the year IMO (and I wasn't even anticipating it), but he definitely was a bit hypocritical with the HHID gimmick. There's audio somewhere here on the site where Nas pretty much admits it's a gimmick.

"It got them talking didn't it?"

The reason everyone is talking about hip-hop being dead is because things have been boring for quite some time lately. All this arguring and bickering back and forth between artists and fans is actually really GOOD for hip-hop because its keeping current and fresh. It's only opinions against opinions. The old think the new is weak and the new think the old is wack. One thing is certain, hip-hop will evolve and only get better from this. All this talk about Nas' must be generating money for somebody, dont you think? Nas' "Hip-Hop Is Dead" phrase got many people in an uproar and upset. He knew this mght happen, pushed the envelope out there and got CRAZY response from that. Excellent marketing technique. Dont forget this is a business.....and in business, popularity sells.

I never believed dat Hip Hop was dead, I asked myself da question of whether I still luvd Hip hop becuz so many changes were goin' through it. I believe 4 me it went stagnant, it became hard 2 listen 2 cuz it was being used 4 a quick buck, and b4 it was more about the quality of the music, now it's about the numbers. It's not dat I hate on any new muzik, it's dat some of deez artist need 2 have some responsibility, and dat's not 2 make my type of muzik. But in essence, progress Hip Hop, and dat's y it became stagnant 2 me. Dat doesn't mean every rapper was doin' dat, but back then rappers went across the states with they shit, I mean really, look at Dre. Dat muffucka transcends over every style, cuz it has quality, dat's what I feel is missin right now. I was excited dat Nas was sayin dat shit, yeah he was jus stirrin da pot, but it's what's needed, da competition, da fire. Fuck y'all, I seriously can't wait 2 hear moe of Hip Hop now, becuz he called every1 2 arms, and I honestly think muffuckas weren't tryin' no moe. Now they hafta answer 2 dem being put on da lime light, and every1's gon' b listenin', and if all u do is get ur feelings hurt, and u don't come back wit ur strongest shit, den he did us a fucken favor by gettin rid of u. Y'all act like jus becuz some of deez muffuckas have some tight singles, and all over TV with they videos, they merit our money, naww dawg. Make a dope album through and through, FUCK, then I'll support ur ass, even 50, and Lord knows I can't stand dat muffucka. So as 4 now, listen, bump, and feel a new era of Hip Hop, who's gon' answer Nas's call??? We'll c soon enough. Peace, y'all

T-Spence, good point, but what people need to realize is how is that different from the past? How many early hiphop cds went gold let along platinum? How many albums people consider classics have gone platinum?

Club songs = the way to the top because the more mainstream your music is, the wider your audience. The wider your audience, the more $$ you can potentially bring in.

Why does it have to be a "gimmick saying hip hop is dead" I feel that Nas really feels in his heart that hip hop is dead. Now lets not get literal because we all know that this thing of ours will live forever, BUT as far as what hip hop was when it started(70's) through the golden era of the 80's, and national exposure of early 90's, it definitely has lost it's way. i know times change and things are going to be different, BUT we cant lose sight of the foundation we built or else we wont have anything to stand on! Cats dont know the history, wanna beef all day, follow what is hot at the time to sell records instead of being themselves and putting out a true reflection of self, get caught up trying to bling, overdoing the materialism, talk about how many drugs they've sold and then think it's cool, glorify negativity so that our youth thinks that is how you should act to be an MC now days, degrade women callin them hoes, bitches, chickenheads etc, rarely balancing that out by calling them queens, good moms, princesses, lovers, or wives, thinking that record sales make you the best MC and you are garbage if you dont sell, commercialization of hip hop by almost every company putting commercials on TV with OUR culture as the hook to sell their garbage, bloodsucking from us and not allowing us to take control of what we created. Instead we see the same old capitalism with a few true representatives of the culture doing it right like Russell Simmons, LA Reid, or Jay Z. I could go on but i hope yall get the message. Why does Nas have to be "starting a beef with the whole game?" I aint feelin that, its just his honest critic of how he sees it right now. And i will bet that he would name most of the stuff i just posted as reason for his feeling that. So cats just need to move forward, use creativity, originality, rep where they are from and what they know, put messages in the music that uplift our people, take more ownership and control of the game, and last but not least respect ourselves as men and women so that our kids will grow up and have something to call their own and be proud of. Hip Hop IS INTERNATIONAL, everybody looks up to it and we are in the right position to use this for the education and empowerment of the people in the struggle...PEACE

Nas is THE nastiest rapper ever. PERIOD. HE CAN SAY WHAT THE FUCK HE WANTS. IT'S AMAZYING 2 me that one rapper's ALBUM COVER can evoke so much controversy. WHICH SHOWS JUST HOW POWERFUL NAS IS. Had T.I., or Jeezy, or Master P, or Chingy or Young Joc, or Nelly, or Ying Yang Twins, or any of them other wack ass and I stress the ASS, DOWN SOUTH people who holler on tracks and repeat double phrases in hooks named their album, HIP HOP IS DEAD, there would be NO media coverage, no controversy, no nothing. It'd just be them droppin an album. PERIOD. What I do know is, I BOUGHT FOUR copies of Nas' new CLASSIC and it is FIRE. PERIOD. Hip Hop AIN'T dead, cause Nas and Jay just brought it back. Like Styles said, it's in critical condition and needed some life support. YOU CAN ONLY LISTEN 2 THAT CORNY ASS CRUNK SHIT BUT FOR SO LONG. IT'S TERRIBLE. At a party I can only tolerate one or 2 tracks then I'm done. The EAST IS BIZACK!! And don't 4get my man AZ dropped on the low, AND ghost!

The South ain't killin Hip Hop. But artists like Jigga, Nas, Eminem, even Kanye, the Game, the Whole G-Unit camp, Dipset, Snoop, Papoose, are all doing there thing. But the quality of the rap game has fallen off, Young Jeezy is a horrible rapper, but he entertains the fans with his style and his sound, so he is even good for Hip Hop. Hip Hop is entertainment, rap is the actual lyrics, that's the difference.

i'm surprised that a writer of website fails to see what Nas means when he says Hip Hop Is Dead. He has stated time and time again and even in his rhymes that our music is dead because we don't own it. It doesn't belong to us, it belongs to music execs, corporations, and big money deals. That's not how it was back in the day...the music wasn't all money driven. Today artists dont need any real talent to be successful in the business. That goes for any region. Nas has also stated too that he is not attacking a specific region but everywhere. The fact is hiphop is dying...u state that there is good music to be heard and that is true...but most of those artists with actual talent don't sell. So imagine if u had all the skill in a job and some schmuck with no skill gets the position. Apply that principle here. I dont have any particular hate for any type of music from other regions (from queens by the wayyy)..but hip hop was and always will be about the mic. Most casual listeners dont view hiphop in any other way but buffonery...they dont know about other rappers who actually have something legitimate to say on the mic...murs, little brother, talib kweli, pharoahe monche, common, nas, joe budden, royce da 5'9, mos def, andre 3000, ras kass, with the exception of nas people dont know about these guys ability on the mic (most people dont even kno that andre was a rapper before he started singin). The days of an mc are almost ova. Eminem to say tra-la-la-la on a song and he still would sell records (nice rapper anyway)

I gotta check these "mixtapes". I've never ALLOWED myself to really let myself like anyone else but the east (from Camden, NJ...directly across the bridge from Philly) so I'm gonna DOWNLOAD some Lil Wayne tracks and listen and see if he is fire. I want a TRUE lil wayne fan to list his BEST 5 tracks and I'll honestly determine if he can rap. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh BUT WAIT, Don't Gilly write all Cash $ shit!? Ha. How 'bout that!? I CAN'T do it. By the way, Gilly's (Major Figgas) from Philly. NOBODY ever ghostwrit for Nas. So Lil Wayne will NEVER get any respect from me OR the hood. PERIOD. If some1 asked me to list Nas' 5 best songs, hahahahhahaahaahhaha, it would be literally impossible. There's no way ANY panel could EVER come to an agreement on something like that. The fact that someone COULD list any artists top 5 means they are B or C rated. Jay fans, can y'all list his top 5 songs? How could you? The only way you could do it, is if you, maybe, categoried Jay and Nas' songs into like, message songs, story tracks, straight spitting (about nothin' in particular), freestyles, club shit, and so on...Or maybe you'd have to say that PER album...it's too hard! Like, I guess I could say that Nas' top 5 stories (on albums, not including mixtapes) or, I'll say my favorite Nas stories are (in no particular order)...I tried....I really tried to FOCUS...it's impossible...how bout this, my TOP 5 FAVORITE NAS It Was Written verses (in no particular order):
1. Verse 2, The Message...Pure FIRE
2. Verse 3, I Gave You Power...Pure FIRE
3. Verse 3, Watch Dem Niggas...Pure FIRE
4. Verse 3, I Gave You Power...My FAVORITE VERSE ON THE ALBUM...."i bet it be some shit when we connect the stretch, when we catch them cess niggas wit the techs we blessed...." whoooooo
5. Verse 2, The Setup...WHAT!???
6. Verse 1, Suspect Witness...WHAT!???
7. Verse 2, Shootouts...I'm OVER 5 now...I can't stop...
8. Verse any, Black Girl Lost...

See, how hard it is? People might even debate THESE! Or say I left some out!

Listen, Nas has SPIT FIRE (and Hov) on EVERY ALBUM...there are bright spots, EVEN ON what I feel IS Nas' worst album, Nastradamus! Lyrically, he's ALWAYS there, just sometimes his albums get boring (i.e. God's Son) cause the beats aren't always on FIRE. It doesn't make him a "worse" rapper...just makes his ALBUM not as good as it could be...that's what y'all have to understand about Nas...

He's the BEST RAPPER....but his albums necessarily aren't always that nasty, beat-wise, and Nas doesn't really make party/club tracks, like say Jay or Busta or (I hate to say it) 50 (who is an ENTERTAINER, LIKE JEEZY OR PUFF, NOT a RAPPER), or rappers from the south, so if you're just a CASUAL hip-hop fan, you're probably not privvied with hearing how vicious he really is.

I like the comment gp180 made, and I quote, "it's only problem iz that it embraces more wack rappers den it use to..." I gotta give you that. But Nas said that a while ago too. People come up, get on, spit a sentence with a hot little hook and gotta couple bad bitches in the video, and the mainstream is like, oh he's hot. And he don't be hot. Frustratin'.

The Saviors:

Nas & Jay. Two FIRE albums. I wish people stop saying that Hip Hop is Dead is hot but "it's not Nas' best". Duh. NOTHING'S ever gonna be his best. Think about it. Nas has to be the rapper most greatly criticized and compared to in the history of rap, no....MUSIC. EVERYTHING he puts out, we compare it to Illmatic or It Was Written. It's so unfair, lol. Had Nelly came out with Hip Hop is Dead, we'd be bowing down to him right now. But nooooo, because it's Nas, we're like, it's an okay album, for him. That means we're DOWNGRADING how NASTY the album REALLY IS, because it was NAS that put it out. Y'all feel me? HIP HOP IS ALIVE....Thanks 2 the 2 FIRE albums Jay and Nas put out at the end of 2006.....There, I'm done.

Man, the fact that we live in an era where dudes truely believe that Wayne is the best rapper alive is kinda horrible(I've heard all those mixtapes and personally, I think he's okay and that's it), I bet that's one of the reason's niggaz are sayin' this shit is dead...but, I disagree. Hip-Hop will never die, even if the fans are accepting the bullshit that the radio and T.V. feeds 'em...just listen to what you like, if niggaz got a problem wit it then it's their problem, not yours...there's no way everybody is gonna agree on who's the best, who's the worst and which albums are classic or not...

Hip Hop Is Dead! Bottom Line! Everybody need to go and study hip hop and then go and study rap! 2 totally different things! These niggaz nowadays are rappers not MC's and um RUN DMC was the first group to go gold so gold n platinum has been around for a while! I wanna know y everybody thinks these down south rappers go platinum because they dont! Not Rick Ross Not D4L Not Dem Franchise Boyz Not even they have crazy spins but they dont sell like evrybody think they do! And n e way the rapper is the last 1 to get paid anyway i'd put out bullshit music too..................................................................

Hip Hop isnt Dead But it is people like D4L and franchize boyz that is killing it. They are not making music. They making up dances. They are teaching use how to dance and people walkin around sayin people like lil john and d4L are there favorite rapper when they arent even rappers. Those niggas make the south look bad.The south need people like slim thug,luda,t.i,ugk,jezzy,.....and more.Hip hop aint dead its just dance music sells more then a nigga sittin down with a pen and paper and thinkin about what he sayin........It not that hard to make up a song when 80%percent of the words is YEP!In my white Tee

hiphop is dead and u know why because bullshit songs like laffy taffy, candy shop and lean wit it rock wit it, killed it. cmon yall say something with some real meaning, muthafuckas rapping about drinking cough syrup what the fuck is that? hiphop died with big and pac. after they died the door opened an garbage came from everywhere, all kinds of wack acts came out from all over. since the 2 legends have fallen we didnt have a choice but to listen to the bullshit that was all over the airwaves.hiphop became a circus spawning all kinds of clowns diddy,ja,no limit and cash money to all the latest garbage.

HIp hop aint dead dat shit is a live and well. What people gotta realize is dat since hip hop is diveded into three main divsion east coast ,west coast, and down south everybodies gonna get a turn to run the game. When hip hop statred the east coast ran it niggas was all bout lyrics. In the 90s west coast ran that shit niggas was all about being gangsta. Now in 07 da south run that shit and most of it bout club tracks. Every part plays a role in the make up of hip hop so once the south time is ova its just gon circle back around.
