The Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival has become a staple in the Music community since it’s inception a few years back. Every year it promises fans of Hip-Hop a healthy dose of the genuine article, and 2007 was no disappointment.
Boasting a line up that included EPMD’s Parish Smith, Mad Skillz, Consequence, Tanya Morgan, Sean Price, Large Professor, Ghostface, and even a special appearance by Fat Joe, it’s safe to say everyone got their fill of great music.
Every type of person you could possibly imagine was there, from hippies to hardcore gangstas, proving that music (good music anyway) is what can really connect people. You haven’t seen anything until you see people from all walks of life reciting Sean Price lyrics word for word, and dancing in the crowd.
Every artist grabbed the mic with a mission, and believe me when I say that no act (even the lesser-known ones) put on a bad show. Brooklyn’s own Poison Pen and his entourage even performed in the midday blazing sun, sweating as he cycled through his catalogue, most notably his new album single “Bed Stuy BestBuy”. Skillz even took it back to 06 with a performance of his trademark “The Wrap Up”, and his single “It’s a Crazy World.”
The nearly 7 hour event could barely fit the vast majority of artists set to perform. Hilarious proof of this is Consequence’s set, which he threatened to extend because he felt like he didn’t get enough in, until Ralph McDaniels, the host of the event, cut him short to make way for Ghostface Killah. The crowd voiced its disapproval, but to no avail. It was all forgotten quickly though, as soon as The Wally Champ himself, Ghostface hit the stage.

This was my first time seeing Ghost live, and he damn sure made it worth my while as he covered nearly all bases. From “Run” to “Metal Lungies” to tracks with his Theodore Unit brethren, Trife Da God, Sun God and others, the Wu affiliates sure know how to put on a good show. He ended the event off with a call for everyone to be peaceful. “Throw ya peace sign up!” “Keep ya fingers together, because it’s apart that we falter”. Truer words have never been spoken.
