I was watching it. It was kind of crazy because I see that everybody had on Supreme Team shirts, then at the end, there is Irv Gotti boasting about he beat the FEDS. But did Irv really beat the FEDS? Or did the FEDS beat him?
Let’s start from the beginning….The FEDS had Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff back in the late 80’s along with the rest of the drug kingpin(Fat Cat, Pappy….), but everybody else except Preme was sentenced to life. Preme came home in 97, ready to make a change because he knew the FEDS were watching every step he made. During this time, DJ Irv was coming up in the game and eventually came across somebody who everybody looked up to in Queens…..particularly in the Hollis/South Jamaica area. Irv and Christopher Lorenzo became cool with Supreme and they developed a friendship. Supreme saw that it was a cool thing to drag the real life into the Entertainment business. So they decided to do business.
The FEDS are watching this relationship and wonder what’s going on here. So they started to tap Irv and listen to his conversations, and this was in ‘97. Irv started to be more related in different projects and started to make a name for himself. Then they started the label called Murder Inc, copying a killing mob from the 30’s and 40’s. But, it was a bad name, especially for Irv who was starting to affiliate himself with one of the most feared men in New York. The FEDS, meanwhile, knew what was going on and it just takes one mess up to reveal what’s going on so they can get involved.
Fast forward to 2000-2001. A couple of shootings and murders in Queens happened and fingers were being pointed to a big name who was directly affiliated with Murder Inc. Also not to mention the 2002 killing of Jam Master Jay. The FEDS think they know who is behind these things and it will only take a short time to get who they always wanted.
Fast forward to 2004-2005. The FEDS indicted Irv and Chris for money laundering with Supreme. (For those who don’t know, money laundering is taking illegal money and putting it into legal businesses). Instead they trialed Irv and Chris, but not Supreme. And the FEDS played it so beautiful like Ali vs. Foreman. The FEDS knew Irv and Chris were going to act tough and decide to fight them, just what they wanted. Irv and Chris eventually were found not guilty, but it took all their money to beat the FEDS. The FEDS used them all up and decided to let them go. The FEDS knew their plan worked whether Irv and Chris were found guilty or not. Irv and Chris were happy and celebrating…...meanwhile somebody who was in jail at the time awaiting his trial wasn’t.
So the FEDS decided to bring Supreme up to trial next, purposely after Irv’s and Chris’ trial. The FEDS knew Preme and Murder Inc. were on the same team, so they decided to make the trial last so that when Preme’s trial came up, Irv and Chris had no financial support to help him. The FEDS had so much evidence and so many people took the stand against Preme that it was impossible to beat them. Not to mention, Preme ran out of money also to fight them. But, there was one last hope was for Supreme and it was to ask a couple people to take the stand for him. He asked 50 Cent, Irv, Ja Rule, Jay-Z and more to testify for him. But nobody showed up. So Preme was sentenced to life.
After all the controversy, Irv’s finances dropped extremely below what he had before the trial. As soon as Ja Rule decides to show his face from a three year disappearance, he gets indicted on weapon charges, but from 99-2003 Ja wasn’t involved with any felony cases. Supreme made plenty of enemies from being involved with shootings and murders for defending Irv and Murder Inc. It made me wonder why during the behind the scenes, they didn’t shoot the video in Queens and Irv talked about other parts different parts of New York, instead of his own home.
It was simple as ever. The FEDS didn’t care about Irv and Chris. They cared about the big fish in the sea. And they used the little fish to catch him. Congrats to the brilliant Irv Gotti.
