Chris William from Entertainment Weekly is among us enlightened ones as he's dubbed Souljaboytellem.com the #1 Worst Album of 2007 (I guess great minds do think alike).Williams says the album is a "teenage wasteland filled with monotonously looped chants and agonizing blunt-force beats."
O.K. ... maybe Williams was a little hard on the kid. What was he really expecting from Soulja Boy (who was sued for allegedly biting his name from Soulja Boy of the Home Dogs)? Seriously, the kid produced his entire album using the demo version of Fruity Loops...talk about hungry. He's not some gritty MC who's won tons of open mic contests in a row. We're talking about a kid who's made a nice little piece of change off of myspace and youtube. I mean after all, he did manage to move 697,000 units so he must be doing something right......right?
Well...yes and no.
It's good to see that hip-hop has the potential to free a family from the grips of poverty. But at what cost? Because after listening to the album, it seems to me that this type of music cheapens hip-hop and turns it into something that is miles from what it was meant to be. There is NO CONTENT or ORIGINALITY ANYWHERE ON THAT ALBUM. Now don't get it twisted, I like to dance in the club. But when it gets to the point where you have an "artist" putting out 15 tracks of straight up trash, I begin to have a problem with it. As a matter of fact, I can't even call this kid an artist because there is no way that he can believe what he's doing is art (which is what hip-hop is). If you don't believe me, just check out the tracks. My personal favorite is "Booty Meat" (which is better that Crank Dat to me).

I think he's just after the life. You know, the attention, the sex, the chains (which is especially evident as he's gripping his pendant and pointing on the album cover), and last but not least - the money. And if that's what he wants, then he should be satisfied. Because I'm sure he has more than enough of all four.
At the end of the day, we can be as mad as we want at Soulja Boy for watering down hip hop with songs like "Booty Meat" and "Agraaahhh" (his new single off the album). But the fact remains that he's not alone. There are plenty of "artists" (none of whom will be mentioned in this article as I refuse to add to their glorification) who are ripping hip-hop to threads. The only way to fight back is for real artists to put out real shyt. This way people can see the difference.
If you're reading Soulja Boy, no disrespect. Keep gettin paid. But when I have kids, I want them to know the difference between hip-hop and hip-NOT. Only time will tell where this kid's career is headed. And unless he plans on writing some rhymes that are worth listening to, I for one hope its headed to the pits - never to be seen again.

Soulja Boy made his album and I'm impressed that someone of his age could go and do it all on a demo version of FL, so I have to give him respect for that. You can't hate on him for that; everybody has the right to make an album in their bedroom if they want to, even if it's a shit album (I'll reserve my judgement on Soulja Boy since I haven't heard it.)

Really, I think that if there is a real problem for hip-hop here it's not the fault of Soulja Boy or any other artist who is just doing their thing, it's more likely a problem on the part of the general public (large numbers of whom probably just prefer run-of-the-mill beats and lyrics), the record companies (who are just pandering to the public while chasing $$$) and also the disc jockeys, radio stations, and music TV channels that play the commercialized as opposed to the hardcore.

ok i do see what you're saying and to some extent i do agree. you said he is not trying "to save hip hop" that is true he is far from it. Yet not only is he not trying to save hip hop, he is contributing nothing of merit to the art. Furthermore he is attributing to the undoing thereof, by applying more stereotypes then he may conciously know. I say this in light of the recent "nappy headed hoe" scandal, I as a black man and hip hop enthusiast do not believe it is proper for him to release a track that further demoralizes and demeans females ("booty meat"). While money and popularity are probably the motivating factors, we as concerned fans for the genre should hope and see to it that mentors will step in and educate these young entrepenuer emcees, so that for future generations (such as mine) will be able to enjoy quality music as well.
