WoooHah 2008 Preview: Hip-hop artists in movies
by on January 1st, 2008
2007 was the year that hip-hop artists dominated more than just music as they gained more and more exposure in movies, reality TV and online clips. Established artists such as Ludacris, Common, Snoop and Andre 3000 continued to make noise in Hollywood. But 2008 looks to be an even bigger year for Hip-hop in Hollywood. A look at what 2008 has to offer...
Jim Jones' BET reality TV show
If Snoop, Rev Run, Salt-N-Pepa and even Irv Gotti can do it, why can't Jim Jones? BET
ran an article awhile ago about Jones' current spats with VH1
producers for his reality show "Keepin' Up With the Jones.'" Due to
constant arguments with producers, Jones' reality show, which was
originally supposed to air with "Gotti's Way" and "The Salt-N-Pepa
Show," has been put on hold. Filming has been complete for awhile now,
but as any producer in reality TV knows, it's all in the editing and
Jones had issues early on with the thin line between true reality and
scripted reality programming.
“There’s a bunch of time we bumped heads while
doing the show. That’s pretty much what the show is about, me spazzin’
out on them [producers],” Jones explained. “Reality shows, they call it
scripted reality, so it’s really not reality for none of these TVs and
I told them I’m really not used to that. It’s either ya’ll gon’ catch
the essence of the moment or you don’t catch it at all. We’re not doing
nothin’ scripted. We’re just gonna follow life and that’s what it’s
basically about.”
Even though Jones and BET producers clearly have issues, due to his rising popularity you can expect "Keepin' Up With the Jones'" to air sometime by mid 2008.
Ice Cube to play B.A. Baracus in "A-Team" movie?
John Singleton has been involved in this project for years and is in talks to develop and direct a modern day The A-Team Movie
with Ice Cube rumored to play the shows most notable character B.A.
Baracas (AKA Mr. T). Singleton and Ice Cube of course have worked
together in the past on the classic Boyz N the Hood. While everything is in rumor stage at this point, Singleton has been attached to The A-Team Movie for
awhile now. In fact a screen play has already been written with one
version by Bruce Feirstein, the same guy who wrote the James Bond films
The World Is Not Enough, Tomorrow Never Dies and Golden Eye.
The A-Team Movie has been in various stages of development for years...if it can actually get greenlit expect it end of 2008.
Coach Snoop movie back in the works
Although The Snoop Dogg Youth Football League is currently facing a lawsuit regarding exclusive footage rights of the league, Coach Snoop,
the family-friendly comedy starring Snoop Dogg is still all-systems-go.
The film has been in development since 2004, but as the writers of the
family comedies The Wild and Snow Dogs finish up the script and as the popularity of Snoop's football league and his new reality show emerge, Coach Snoop is primed for a 2008 release date.
"This film is about how I learned to be a good father through
coaching," Snoop Dogg said. "It's also about life lessons learned on
and off the field..." Coach Snoop will be in the tone of other sports family friendly comedies such as Rebound, Kicking and Screaming and The Bad News Bears so don't expect any chronic smoking, gin n' juice or deez nutz. The only balls getting touched in this movie...are footballs.
Movie is currently in development and on track for a 2008 release
Xzibit in new X-Files Movie
Xzibit will be playing alongside Mulder and Scully in the new X-Files
movie scheduled to come out on July 25, 2008. David Duchovny and
Gillian Anderson will be back and Xzibit will be joining the
alien-hunting posse as a fellow member of the FBI. Xzibit's schedule
freed up after the Oliver Stone film Pinkville
was delayed due to the writers strike. Filming for X-Files begins next
month in Vancouver. Time for some aliens to get a piece of the
X-to-the-Z!
Andre 3000 in Will Ferrell comedy Semi-Pro
New Line Cinema will be releasing the Andre 3000 and Will Ferrell basketball comedy Semi-Pro which
comes to theaters February 29, 2008. From the early cuts of the
film he definitely has a major role as Clarence "Coffee Black" Withers
where he is the shooting guard for the Flint Tropics basketball team
and has some hilarious parts of the movie. Check out the official
poster and an exclusive pics of Andre and his fro here.
Diddy casting rumors for upcoming Notorious B.I.G. film
We brought you an exclusive update at the upcoming Notorious B.I.G. biopic right here on Defsounds. The release date of Notorious
has been confirmed for January 16, 2009 (close enough to 2008 for this article) which is timed for the Martin
Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. While no official casting
announcements have been made, the big news around town is that there is
a leading candidate to play the role of Sean Combs AKA Puff Daddy AKA
Diddy AKA Ciroc Pusher.
Melvin Jackson Jr.(photo above Left), who had limited roles in "The Wire" and "Everybody Hates Chris" is rumored to be the leading candidate to play the young Sean Combs. Many websites and blogs have asked why Diddy just doesn't play himself, but since Notorious is a biopic the Sean Combs in the film is the twenty year old version of him, the one who was an A&R Rep for Uptown Records and then signed Notorious B.I.G. in 1992. So the current Diddy would need to shave off 15 years of aging and allow people to call him Puff Daddy once again...two things that would never happen...even with some CGI and persuasion. As always...expect more exclusive updates from us on this one.
