We Need To Stop Blaming Musicians For Our Dumb Ass Kids

by Matios on August 12th, 2008

Whose Job Is It Anyway??

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/2302/2320/9721/asset.jpgEvery time I ever stole my father's car while drunk, talking on my cell-phone with no headset (which is illegal in California), running red-lights while two wheels were on the side-walk so only half of the license plate would get caught by the Red Light Camera, I always had rap playing.

Sike. His stereo didn't work, but somehow, the media slapped this spotlight on Hip Hop like drug-use, alcohol abuse, hand to hand crack-cocaine exchanges, guns in schools, guns in neighborhoods, and women being treated like property is all a result of our lifestyle. And music.

Let me just add, that when I'm up watching the Olympics or BET: Uncut, there are ads for these white women flashing their little breasts with other white men. This video is called Girls Gone Wild, and even though I've heard it mentioned a few times ... it's no where near as much as Hip Hop. And all we do in our videos is get girls to wear bikinis and eat strawberries.

Either way, all the lollygagging and finger pointing is pulling attention from real issues like ... war ... and death ... and drug trafficking that's getting these substances in America, and perhaps even the fact that, maybe, somehow, WE MIGHT HAVE THE FIRST KNEEGROW PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION.

So I've been listening to music my whole life, as has almost every other homosapien on this planet, and I think it's safe to say that a lot of music is codified--as in we have a coded language that you have to be the least bit involved in to get a better understanding of.

And because of this, no one knows what they're talking about when they're blaming Rap for everything, because really, as much as it's been regurgitated and manipulated, the fact that Rap is reporting these atrocities is true. So we can't hold these musicians accountable for that.

As far as getting arrested 6 times in 2 months, or running around with pounds of marijuana and unregistered guns, I say no comment.

This is America. We have due process. So technically, they're innocent until a jury or a judge says so. Meaning they're not really bad influences, they're alleged bad influences.

But when did it become a rapper's job to raise your child?

All views and/or opinions in this article are not the sole belief/disbelief of Defsounds owners, staff or affiliates.

I don’t do black music, I don’t do white music
I make fight music, for high school kids
I put lives at risk when I drive like this
I put wives at risk with a knife like this
Shit, you probably think I’m in your tape deck now
I’m in the back seat of your truck, with duct tape stretched out
Ducked the fuck way down, waitin to straight jump out
put it over your mouth, and grab you by the face, what now?
Oh – you want me to watch my mouth, how?
Take my fuckin eyeballs out, and turn em around?
Look – I’ll burn your fuckin house down, circle around
and hit the hydrant, so you can’t put your burning furniture out
I’m sorry, there must be a mix-up
You want me to fix up lyrics while the President gets his dick sucked?
Fuck that, take drugs, rape sluts
Make fun of gay clubs, men who wear make-up
Get aware, wake up, get a sense of humor
Quit tryin to censor music, this is for your kid’s amusement
But don’t blame me when lil’ Eric jumps off of the terrace
You shoulda been watchin him – apparently you ain’t parents

this is what i dont get. there are movies out there that glorify murder, torture, guns, and drugs and people will NOT complain about that. but when it comes to rap, people starting blaming it.
first off to all you fucking retarded parents out there, rap is entertainment. i guarantee you music will not make your kid shoot everyone in sight or any other bullshit. you know what makes kids do bad things? PARENTS. Luda wont make little Susie buy weed, 50 wont make Tommy buy a AK 47, and Busta wont make Bob kill that bully at school. its you (parents) that cause this. because in reality, parents are the biggest influences in a kids life.
now next time on the news i dont wanna hear “16 yr old Gary died by hanging himself. the last thing he was doing was listening to a Eminem album.” no you ignorant fuck this is how it really went down, “16 yr old Gary died by hanging himself. he suffered a abusive relationship by his parents and got bullied at school constantly.”
music will NOT make someone do something

That’s a really good article!

And as much as I agree with you… at the same time i have 2 DISAGREE With u as well!

I mean… when we came up it was different…we started listening to it all from the beginning for the most part (70’s and 80’s babies!).
We’re older, and again or the most part our levels of common sense were alot higher than the kids now.

We had fun music, and dance music as well… but everything wasn’t soo DAMN DUMBED DOWN!!!!
_____

Aiight I’m getting off topic…

The Major Difference between THEN (when we came up with our violent music) and NOW (with these dumb ass kids and the music)… is the lack of PARENTING!

Most females now a days are pregnant and become mothers at 16!!!!!! ( and I know… I work for welfare in Camden, NJ of all places).
To make matters even worse…“Big Mommas” are like 32-35 now a days….and were young ass mothers themselves!

So we have a cycle of kids trying to raise kids!
There’s no REAL elder in the household teaching right from wrong or keepin’ these fuckin’ kids in check!

Even mooooooore so… The kids are being raised by TV, Radio and the fuckin’ Internet and NEVER see the consequeneces of their IDOLS’ negative actions… Which in return is why they go out and try to relive everything they’ve seen their favorite rapper do or worse say.

When a kid sees a rapper with jewelry, Bentleys and Bitches on Tv… they don’t know that ALL of that shit is just a mere RENTED FACADE!

All they know is that they’re “idol” rapped about how he got it, and that he has it…PERIOD.

So they naturally go out and do the shit that their “idol” says they’ve done…thinking it’s gonna bring them the same rewards….BULLSHIT!

That’s where the parents are supposed to come in at… But when ya mom is 12-15 years younger than you… 9 times outta 10…she’s doing the same dumb shit that you’re doing…prolly with you!!!

It’s just a fucked up cycle that’s not going to end unti these fuckin’ RAPPERS start explaining the consequences to these mislead kids… especially since their parents wont!

Just venting….

^^^yo man i completely agree with u…BUT
when a rapper does make a song about how life really is and how to make it better it NEVER hits the radio
the shit that hits the radio is ‘shake ya ass’ and ‘bitches and hoes’ (they censor it but kids arent stupid, they know what it is)

Something that really makes me mad is when they talk about rappers cussin all the time and there kids here it. How do they hear it? They censor profanity on the radio, in videos, and they have clean cd’s. If u didnt let ya kids download or buy songs with profanity you wouldnt hear it

They dont talk about hearing profanity on regular cable now tho. Some channels dont even bleep out bitch no more.

But can it load a gun for you and cock it too?”.. you cant blame music for the dumb shit that peopel do, you have to look elsewhere..

“But when did it become a rapper’s job to raise your child?”

I’ve been asking that damn question for years and no good response comes back to it. It’s the parents fault on why kids act like this because PARENTS AIN’T WATCHING THEIR KIDS!!!

Also, if you don’t want your kids listening to music with profanity or violent movies on TV buy the kid a clean version of the album and use parental control on your TV and block all the R rated movies so the kids can’t watch them.

Also, another Funny thing is there’s tons of music gernes out there and the parents always select hip hop or rock, smh… don’t blame any music gerne or movies parents, BLAME YOUR FUCKING SELF!!!

Now to end this, I’m a Mixtape DJ and a Parent, I know my rules as a parent and I will always follow the rules as a parent. Any perent out there should do the same thing I’m doing.

Wiz, I think you are definitely wrong. Why?

If I made a movie, and in the movie I shoot like 50 people, and I curse throughout the movie, it gets a R rating, so it’s for people 17 and older.

Now if I made a cd, and in the cd all I talk about is shooting people and I curse throughout the cd, it will get the Parental Advisory.

But for some reason I will get a shit load of flack for the CD because it’s “aimed” for children. Since when was it that when you make a fucking song, it was aimed for children, no matter the subject of the song? And that is what’s bullshit about it.

Don’t give me that “You can just download a CD” shit niggas be bootlegging them movies and having them up all over the internet. Tell me you don’t know about “watch-movies.net”

As for Hip-Hop getting scrutiny..Well that’s blatant racism..Hip-Hop doesn’t even sell in the same ball-park as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and The Eagles…Lol Celine Dion sold 200million records!!!!!!!!!!!! Whitney Houston sold 45 million off of one album!!!!!

Jay-z has sold 53million in 10 albums…it ain’t shit compared to the 3 artists mentioned above..

It’s not the content..It’s WHO’s making the music. Black and Brown people and we all know white folks don’t like people of color making more money than them, having a nicer car or living in a better neighborhood..That’s that “white man’s burden” syndrome…The cameras are focused on hip-hop because it’s a majority black and brown enterprise.

Take a look at the NBA dress code and the minimum age requirement being bumped up to 20..It has little to do with “the well-being of the NBA player”..It has everything to do with white liberals thinking the only way a black man can get ahead is if we coddle him like a child. Take his manhood and his ability to “choose” for himself..

No one cared when Alex Rodriguez went to the Mariners at age 17!!!!!thats because the MLB is a “lighter” sport..Simple as that.

if a kid shoots up a school then he was fucked up in the head already. most school shootings involve years of bullying its the fuckin stuck up little spoiled bitches who drive kids to shootin up schools. them niggas that shot up columbine, they didnt need hip hop or videogames for inspiration, i guarantee if GTA or rap wasnt even invented they wouldve still shot that shit up.

to the guy that said all that racist shit with the sports and white mans burden. fuck you that shit is stupid. im white idc bout black people living better then me, more power to you. you act like white people in general always tryin to bring black people down. you bring yourself down like mikey08 was sayin, black people are the highest race in jails, the highest % of aids in a single race to. what really brings you down is when you start blamin white people for slavery(im talkin general black race of people not specific person) but they blame white people for slavery where the fuck do you think they got the slaves. BLACK PEOPLE SOLD THEIR OWN PEOPLE its your own fault theres slavery. slavery was fucked up and immoral but your own greed caused it.

to marquis—a. rod started when he was 17 because he is the greatest player since mickey mantle idk if you heard of him you might have. did you forget kobe bryant, lebron, and tracy mcgrady started right after high school. and they made the age limit 20 not so they “cant control their own fate” because theres a lot of niggas tryin to get in the NBA. baseball has the deepest farm/minor league system in any sport so its easier for a 17 year old to get in.

so all that racist shit is irrelavent just because white people blame hip hop for violence. im a die hard rap fan, hip hop is my life so as a listener i know its all about guns, drugs, sex, violence thats why they go after it. it is what it is but the racist shit wont help onl add fuel to a already heated debate.

“you act like white people in general always tryin to bring black people down.”

-————————————————————————————————————————————-

That’s the whole point..You don’t have to try very hard. this country from the education system to lending companies is historically unfair and practices discrimination, set up, run and made a way of life by guess who? White People! It’s not your fault that it’s this way and it will take a solid 400 years starting from 1965 to eradicate that foundation, but as a white person today, you definitely reap the benefit of being white..

Chris Rock said it best “there is a white boy in the mail-room of this building in a wheelchair who wouldn’t trade places with me”…

And like I said they raised the minimum age requirement in the NBA to steer more black athletes towards education which isn’t a bad idea, but i don’t see that coddling, holding the hand of an adult in other sports…See that’s more racist than saying I can’t do something..Thinking I only can succeed with your help..

Lol we all know why a dress code was put into place..No other sport has an official dress code that has been in the public light, because since most sports are “lighter” we as a society automatically assume the players will follow suit and present themselves and the respective sport in a positive manner..

Well when it comes to the NBA that assumption is not made simply because it is young black males. I don’t hear the public outcry for baseball, football and other players leaving early from college to turn professional?? lol but then again I’m just ignorant?

Props to the article. Parents are supposed to be the moral foundation for children. It is the responsibility of the parents to teach right from wrong, good from bad, legal from illegal. When children begin to learn and apply the images they are bombarded with daily the blame should be put on the parents. Parents not hip hop are failing children.
I was born to young parents who had nothing better to do than conceive me…if you let them tell it. And they were born to teenagers. But my parents took the duty of raising a child and establishing a strong moral foundation for me. I have been a fan of MUSIC all my life. I have seen images and heard the lyrics that are contradictory to my beliefs but that will not tear my morals apart because my parents role is much larger than anything I can get on the idiot box.
People always talk about this generation of youth being hellions (some are) but I think the real problem is this generation of parents. The parents are worried about the same frivolous things that teenagers worry about… labels, shoes, cars, and drugs.

And as far as the racial stuff that some of you are talking about……..
Yes we live in WHITE America. All of these so called “American” values are really eurocentric values that are forced upon everyone by the majority. For dude talking about Blacks being in jail…lets see 13% of a population you have to be kidding me if you really think that most of them are criminals. What you are saying is a fallacy because of a criminal justice that is scared as shit of the Black male whether he is a criminal or a college student. The penalty for crack is higher than the penalty for cocaine…hmmm I wonder why? And if you don’t get it then you are naive or just a bigot set in your ways.
We did not create the race issue…Europeans came to Africa and got us. Yeah we had some punk ass kinsmen who sold us out, and wrote us off like a bad check, but this Kush guy up there makes it seem like Africans invited the Europeans over. They showed up and caused hell for the Africans just like they came to America and took the Indians’ land.
Get your facts straight before you start talking your pseudointelligence.

Hip Hop is not the blame 4 this world, period. Did Jay-Z crash the planes in towers? Did Nas send troops to start a war? Did Biggie make that man kill that other man? No…Its people and their own decisions, people do wut they do, am I right? Our youth is corrupted, but from what?….The answer: The world as a whole…..Learn it.

Hip-Hop is the perfect scape goat thats why lol.
Of course they won’t blame rock music on stupid ass kids blowing up their schools, cutting themselves, being diagnosed with manic-depression, smoking weed, sniffing coke, shooting coke, etc… Because most of the people complaining, corporate americans(white collar) grew up on the same thing. They just feel like hip-hop is becoming bigger than anything in the history of the usa, so they must attack it.

Although i do believe that media does influence kids to a point, it is up to parents to or gaurdians to raise the retards runnin around trying to get attention. i kno some ppl do things cuz they have to that may not be considered legal, but most of the kids who get caught doin shit are have no reason to do it. So most of the blame should go to tha fam or gaurdian (95% of it), but you cant deny media’a hand in it. I make vids and music and go to school for it, and i’ve actually done studies and research on this subject. that 5% sometimes is just the push some of the crazies need to act or react. but i did like the article, it’s not all hip hop.

I think Bushwick Bill said it best when he stated “hiphop is a mirror on society”also Bill Maher stated that the reason that he likes rap music is because that rappers arent affraid to say the things that other ppl think but do not say.Hiphop is not the cause of the deteriation of society but more like a news report on the deteriation of society.Shit people, America itself was established on the grounds of getting that money. The beginnings of America tells us how the american indian was almost brought to the brink of extinction and how the africans were sold and bought as work mules, and for what reason was all this done for “THE ALLMIGHTY DOLLAR”.Obtaining monetary gain till the poing of greed, lust, murder, evny, rape etc. has been instilled in all ouf our family trees since the very dawn on America. So naturally as a culture ,naw fuck that, that is our culture. We live, breath, eat, sleep and shit that type of lust for self gradification. Its been here since the beginning and it will be here till the end so naturally that is why we all see the glorification of “money hoes n clothes”.Hiphop mirrors this way of life whether politically of superficially.“Hiphop is not a cause of society but it is a response”

I SORTA blame rap for some of these problems. not when it comes to murder, war, and shit like that tho.

today’s rappers make a mockery of the whole principle of makin music, with their simple rhymes and flashin all that expensive crap they probly don’t even own. they make it seem SOOOO easy to get this stuff and achieve status that it makes youngstas not wanna actually WORK and EARN what they want outta life but rather take the easy way out. and that’s why we have so many garbage ass rappers now.

they’re takin away that essential element that every person should have to gain legitimate credability: WORK ETHIC!

Direct and straight to the point. Great article. Stop blaming everything on minorities. That goes for minorities too. America needs to stop putting everything on the hood. Don’t try to put 237 years of bullshit into 30 years of hip-hop. Always we put stars under fire because their position of power. Yea I understand that in that position that they SHOULD live life different from what their used to. I also understand that their human too and make mistakes. Yet every time in our history we blame someone or thing that is positive, or that can bring a form of good and destroy. Think about it. We have read articles on how much rock ‘n roll was not accepted in its beginnings. Martin King, Pres. Kennedy, Malcolm X,John Lennon etc. All down for the cause, but they, or this case “it”(hip-hop) was either forced for a change or gone. yea music alter moods and changes modes from good to bad or bad to good. But how far does that really go? As a child growing up when CANNOT decipher and break down a song and pull from it sell drugs and pop bottles and models. But from the PROPER guidance from PARENTS growing up i know the difference from right and wrong and the consequences of my actions. Also not to trust a stranger. So imma listen to T.I. over my parents and go sell drugs. Know that my life is in danger along with the fam’s. Right!?!?!? .So i guess the cops that murdered Sean Bell in cold blood can blame it on Jay-Z, Nas, and KRS-1 right. All i’m saying is that the world has been fucked up for a while. Hip-Hop, like anything else is a product of an environment. America has a problem with the new Nas album title but its cool for little Britney Spears to be pregnant at 16. Mutha fuckas better wake up…..

music only corrupts children when parents let it corrupt them. man if you 28 yrs old and got a son thats 8 years old whos impressionable, it might be hard, but dont play tupac(no disrespect), jeezy, ti, gucci mane or any other gangsta music around him just because you wanna listen to him, teach him that that music if for grown folks and he needs to be somewhere learning watching yugioh, or lamb chops, or sesame street or something instead of memorizing lyrics from songs he cant comprehend yet. same thing go for the young mothers who play trina, kelis, beyonce(nothing wrong wit em, but they still for grownups) around their daughters and get mad when they see them shaking their asses in public at only 8 years old.

to this article I agree and alot of the comments are on point as a single mother of a nine year old son, It’s all in the parenting, at the age of nine my son still watches cartoons, loves playing sports, and getting hugs and kisses from his mother. but at the same time he loves rap music, and movies and I don’t mind him listening to it, but I also teach him right from wrong and I can honestly say that my son isn’t into killing, shooting nobody, smoking drugs or drinking and all that came from me talking to him and telling him what he hear and see on tv, radio, cd’s etc is not all that is cracked up to be, and some of it isn’t even real plus he don’t mommy doing any of those things and it’s not that I do it when he isn’t around its just that I dont smoke drugs, I don’t kill, steal etc. not saying that I’m a good girl i use to smoke weed back in the day but I stop, I had my son at 20 I finished school and was in a relationship, and i do believe it is a cycle like someone said, but the cycle can stop if we teach our kids and tell them they need to be better than what their parents are!!!!!

u know 4 me i dont give a shit no more cause the goverment is always gonna act like im the parent and while ur livin in my country ur gonna do what i say on some serious shit we could protest this shit and they dont really care but put 1 of those representatives in a hip hop video with all those girls watch they wont say shit but go along with it and say gimme more they are not stupid they say things that are conveniant to them they dont let others speak 4 themselves they speak 4 us which is stupid but wait

WHEN HIP HOP WASNT THERE WHAT WAS CAUSING ALL THESE PROBLEMS THAT ARE NOW BEING BLAMED ON HIP HOP?

hip hop didnt cause this its how people are raised and the things they get taught if any of us as young kids get taught or see that our role models hit women well were gonna see that as the right thing to do but its our choice to see it differently when we get older if its the correct thing or are we making a mistake same goes for murders, drugs, drinking everything

but where are the parents to teach also that everything they see or hear they should not do wtf if everyone was really good and go to church everyday and what not life would be boring and we really wouldnt learn anything i go to church like 2/4 of the time i know what to do im not stupid if i chooose to do something its because i felt like it not because i heard t.i. shoot someone on a song or game say ima kill you next time i see u thats fukin stupid these representatives need to break it down and take a look at this problem in sections not just look at the whole thing at decide

rap/ hip hop is a social justice barometer that testifies to true realities of our people (whomever identifies with those realities), i’ll give you that. But at the same time, all things considered, it is not JUST a reporter of atrocities. While artists may not have the intent to negatively influence America’s youth, the impact of their lyrics and videos cannot be denied.

At the same time, if Hip hop has this much power, there is a large window of opportunity for it to do just as much (if not more) good than it has done bad.
I love hip hop. Real hip hop speaks the truth, is an organic artistic expression, lifts people out of poverty, and has a well of potential to do more to improve our communities.

See, the thing is when people look at hip hop they see this billion dollar industry in which the foundations of it are…rap. That confuses their morals. They grow up thinking to make good money you have to work extremely hard for it, go to college, get a few degrees, and so on. They’re blaming the nation’s problems on hip hop when deep down they know that’s not the case. As you get older you realize that the decisions you make go back down to your roots. Parents. They give you incite on what the future is going to be like and how to prepare for it. Let’s face it, we’ve seen our parents go through it all. Without realizing it you take notes on how they deal with it. Like you said, it comes down to parenting. It’s so sad to see babies everyday that pretty much have a label on them saying, I’M BORN TO BE A FAILURE! I can never understand why poor parents decide to have kids. It’s sort of like hey, my life is hard so let’s make someone else’s hard too. How about getting financially bounded and then deciding to have kids. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.

It’s funny because after reading alot of these threads.. i see the focus mainly being on who’s to blame. When hell, look at the number one selling artist today… Slipknot. They were masks, they yell on songs about things like violence (to others and self), but.. funny enough nobody outside of IOWA and a couple of other scattered towns has ever heard of Slipknot. They make a new CD, grab the number one spot.. nothing is being brought up about their lyrical content or any of that. They sing Metal.

See it’s a different world in Hip-Hop though. Because depending upon what time YOU wanna go back to. Everytime a new artist in Hip-Hop sells number one or close to it.. There’s always these moments in time, where somebody gets shot and hip hop is to blame. Hell, it ain’t even black and white racism. It’s Hip-Hop racism. Eminem even has to deal with his lyrics being put into question. When other white artists such as Slipknot, and other bands are let off the hook.

Honestly. We could debate the topic all day, but what it comes down to is personal responsbility of the people involved. White people’s kids shoot up schools, black folks must take the blame for it. Black kid can’t get out of the hood, blame whitey. If people took personal responsiblity and starting blaming the person in the mirror, the problems wouldn’t happen. And hell, ya’ll wanna quote lyrics.. go listen to “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson if you’re confused about how to make a change in today’s world..

I don’t fully blame hip hop for the influences on our society. I mostly blame the government for feeding our society with drugs & guns. Yeah I said it, Bush Sr. & the CIA shipped drugs & guns to this country in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s. But for those stans who might try and act out there favorite rappers lies, you are a fuckin’ idiot!!!

They only true problem is parents and their honesty with their kids. If you let a nigga know right from wrong and kept them aware of the shit that they are doing and where they can end up… they wouldn’t have been knee deep in the shit in the 1st place.. .Truth

Calm down with that dumb ass kids stuff wiz101 all of us aren’t that dumb. And i’d hate to place blame but if kids aren’t right today its because their parents aren’t raising them right. Now if they had two good parents who tried and they still chose to fuck up then thats on them. Not the music industry or anybody else. But if they never had anybody to show them the right way to go in life then i’d cut them a little bit of slack, and maybe try to educate them rather then condemn them.
