Top 39 Hip Hop News Stories Of 2008

Last day of the year folks so we're about to start rolling out the year end lists that every other publication has been doing all month long. But since we always try to do things a bit different here at DefSounds, instead of a top 10--we're rolling with Top whatever. So here are the top 39 headlines of 2008, of course we can't explain every single headline in this post so we'll summarize the first 10 and link you the the other 29.

#1 T.I. Cops Plea Deal

"TI sentenced to 1,500 hours of community service talking to youth groups around the country, followed by about 12 months in prison."

Now, I'm not saying T.I. snitched--and I'm not saying T.I. didn't snitch...I'm just saying Remy Ma got 8 years for popping two in a chick's belly and OJ got 15 years for robbery and kidnapping.

#2 Lil Wayne Sells A Millie First Week

"Despite having his album leaked, Lil Wayne is on pace to sell between 850,000 to 950,000 albums in his first week"

Actually, Weezy pushed over a million copies of Tha Carter III during it's first week of release which made it the largest first week sales for any album in 2008 in the United States and the first album to reach the million mark in one week since 50 Cent's The Massacre in 2005.

#3 Eminem Officially Announces Relapse

"There are alotta fake album titles floating out there--alot of bullshit titles. The real title of my album that's coming out is called 'Relapse."

Em finally put an end to all the "King Mathers" rumors and announced his return to the rap game after an all too long hiatus.

#4 LA Times Implicate Diddy & Biggie In TuPac Shooting

"In an indepth analysis of the Tupac Shakur murder case, LA Times writer Chuck Phillips indicates Diddy, Biggie,Jimmy Henchmen, and others may have known of an ambush awaiting Pac in 1994."

This story rocked the Hip Hop world and subsequently rocked the credibility of the LA Times after it was discovered that Chuck Phillips pretty much BS'ed his way through the report by using fabricated documents.

#5 Remy Ma Sentenced To 8 Years

"Remy Ma sentenced to eight years behind bars after shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph"

We knew it was coming, we knew there was no way she could get out of this one--but then again we thought the same thing about the T.I. case. WTF 1, Hip Hop Fans 0.

#6 Kanye West Arrested At LAX

"The "Stronger," hitmaker was arrested at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for felony vandalism after causing an estimated $10,000 in equipment damages."

If Hip Hop were highschool, Kanye would be that oddly feminine kid that shows up for class on time, with his home work in hand, and never gets in trouble.I think that pretty much explains why this story was such a shock--and if it doesn't, 3'Oclock this afternoon--you and me bitch.

#7 R. Kelly Acquitted Of All Charges

"The verdict is in......R. Kelly, who was charged over 6 years ago with numerous counts including child pornography, was acquitted on ALL 14 charges."

...We get R. Kelly--they get OJ..fair trade?

#8 XXL Mag Fires Elliot "Yellow Nigga" Wilson

After his long tenure as editor-in-chief Elliott Wilson was excused from his duties today (Jan. 7).

2008 definitely started off with a bang after word got out of Yellow Nigga's firing. Wilson can pretty much be accredited to making XXL Mag what it is today. He can also be accredited to knocking The Source Mag out of the league--with the help of Benzino and Dave Mayes of course.

#9 Eminem Rushed To Hospital

Critically acclaimed rapper Eminem was rushed to a Detroit area hospital over the holidays.

We hadn't heard much from Em prior to his unscheduled hospital visit in January. Then rumors and reports started spreading regarding his collapse and rapid weight gain. The photoshopped pictures of Fat Eminem are probably what made this story so popular.

#10 Young Buck Gets Kicked Out Of G-Unit

"50 Cent says Buck is officially off the group but remains part of the label as a solo artist."
