The Game L.A.X.
by on August 28th, 2008
Album: LAX
Games third studio album
In less than ten years this artist has managed to captivate the hearts and minds of fans all over the world. He has done this with his lyrics, his pain, his toils, and his victories. We have seen the rise, fall and resurrection of an artist that truly wears his heart on his sleeve.
The Game over the course of his career has gone through a lot. Put another rapper in his shoes and we may have a different story to tell right now. He's been signed, shelved, added to G-Unit, dropped, beefed with numerous rappers, and even openly spoken about his own suicidal thoughts. Through it all, he seems to pick him self up and continue to make music. So for now what seems to be the final chapter of his rap career comes into clear view, he is dealt the task of offering what may be his final album when honestly he probably has not even hit his prime yet.
With so much potential and with so much more music to make, L.A.X may be the grand finale of this Compton rapper who has showed every side of himself to us. So the only question to be asked at this moment is, at the point of his departure, will this album make us miss him or will it be a declaration to the fans that there is not much left in the tank and subsequently the game is truly over.
Lyrics- 7.5
Game has long since established himself as a rapper that wont blow you away with crazy wordplay and a complex rhyme scheme, but in this process he has never been considered a horrible lyricist or disgusted a listener with down right simplistic rhymes. What you get with The Game is a lot of name drops and similies scattered all around the song, and of course a metaphor or two. What raises him above average is his emotion. Game pours his soul into every track and you can feel the dedication, emotion and time that is taken for every song on the album, which believe it or not can at times enhance the lyrical experience as it adds to the delivery.
On L.A.X., Game offers decent lyrics, but nothing out of the blue, just consistent to his style. Without the raw skills or crazy subliminals of other rappers, Game raises the bar with his lyrics by having hard hitting lyrics, laced with more truth and relevance than skill. His repetitive nature takes away from the lyrics, but no rapper is perfect, not even the best.
Production-7.5
Like his lyrics his production has nothing so overly complex that it will just blow you away, there are no beats that offer a multi audio attack to the eardrums that will leave you captivated or gushing to press the rewind button. It does all work with a nice mixture of up tempo, mellow and hardcore beats. Game offers to the listeners a variety of different moods. With production done by DJ Toomp, Cool and Dre, Scott Storch, and many others. The production overall is pretty upbeat with a couple of tracks that have a gloomy feel to it. To say that some of the production does not match the songs would be an outright lie, but some beats will bore you while others will have the listener hanging on every word, or every piano and drum chord pulsing through their respective speakers. Nothing overly complex but definitely a significant amount of head nodders, enough to keep the listener from throwing their CD out of the window from sheer boredom or frustration.
Songs/Content-7.5
Game as stated earlier is a rapper that is known to wear his heart on his sleeve. Although he carries the same bragadocious swagger that many rappers have in this day and age, but he also offers a side to him that can make some listeners grow a level of respect, while making others question his credibility as a real gangster. This simply means that Game is not afraid to talk about the way he feels, or openly show comradery towards another human being. While many rappers now make an attempt to add a track or two into their albums that show they are human too, it tends to sound insencere and a bit forced. For the Game this is not an issue, he seems honest and open with his feelings resembling at times a child rehashing on the days when life was a bit easier. Although he gets flack for his constant name drops of other artist, he does it in a way that is not annoying, as it goes with the song and nine out of ten time fits in to what he is actually speaking about.
What hurts Game's content is his repetitive nature, he shows maturity and growth but not in all fields, while listening to his album. You can clearly tell he is not the same man that we met when his first album came out, but the content has stayed the same for the past three albums. The formula remains the same, Compton, Gang banging, name dropping, idle threats, his feelings. There is nothing wrong with sticking to that formula, but as many artist learn, if you are going to stick with the same formula for every single album, you should be sure that however you say it has changed or feels fresh so that the listener does not feel like he has heard it all before.
This album is sincere and it is good but it can also be very boring when you know everything he's going to talk about and how hes going to talk about it. You don't have to be a conscious rapper to mix it up a little bit.
Conclusion-7.5
If this truly is Game's final album than good luck and God speed. For three albums he would have supplied fans from all over with the best music he felt he had available, and for three years we would have readily accepted it. So as the final song fades out and the outro fades in understand that even the greatest of rappers have flaws. The difference between Game and many other rappers who have been in it for a while is time and experience. With his third album out and him looking to retire, we are left with the feeling that we may not have gotten everything that Game has to offer, but we did get everything that he wanted to give. What he gave us was a decent album, above average but not mindblowing, inciteful but slightly repetetive, open but not embarasssing, all in all he gave us what he could and we as listeners must decide as individuals if it was what we wanted. Game gets and 10 for effort but a 7.5 for overall quality. If this was his last offering, I cant help but wish he gave a little bit more.

You buggin.
Defsounds has the WORST album reviews i can find on the net
Curtis over L.A.X.???? Fuck outta here!!!!
YYYUUUAAAHHHH!!!!
sarcasm
This album is at least an 8/8.5
I agree with the rating.
I mean, for his last album, i wanted a little more

good review i’d agree with the rating.
my life and letter to the king are my fav’s off the album.
“hip hop was aborted, so nas breathes life back into the embryo”
But i do agree soulja boys of the world are whack….
SO I GUESS BEG FOR MERCY HAD ALL THE SAME TRACKS TOO THEN. Of course game album gon cover different bases. G-Unit only had one aim on T.O.S. and they said it. AGGRESSION.
T.O.S. WAS A GOOD ALBUM. I DON’T GIVE A FUUUUUUUCCCCKKKK WHAT ANYBODY SAYS AND NO I’M NOT A G-UNIT STAN.
I still fuck with game music wise. Its just some things he do that contridicts himself. All the back and forth with G-Unit for one. EITHER YOU BEEFIN WITH THEM OR YOU NOT.
I not here to say LAX aint a good album. I think its good. But FOR BEING THE SO-CALLED LAST ALBUM IT AINT GON REALLY BE REMEMBERED. Same thing happened to Jay-Z WITH THE BLACK ALBUM.
GAME WILL BE BACK…….HANDS DOWN HE WILL BE BACK. I give LAX 8/10. Too many features though.
“7.5 shit r u out of ur mind”
http://hamexpress.net/2008/08/29/lax-the-game/
gimme a fucking break… you should delete your account and never come back after saying some retarded shit like that
this album is a 6/10 at best…
“Word to Martha Stewart, If I can park a Buick…..” That has gotta be the most random line on LAX
Fair score, I went out and bought it on Tuesday and after listening to it felt the same way he did, it sounded just like the Documentry and The doctors advocate. You guys know he is right too.
Its not a bad album at all, just I expected more. After all this hype and what not you guys were giving it. The Game does a pretty good BIG impersonation though.
Great production, but too much repetitiveness, and Touchdown and Gentleman’s Affair suck hard
Album is at least an 8.5 Not a 7.5, LAX destroys TOS in every way possible.
Not to mention he made 230 somethin songs before he even put this shit out. So, he’s still got a lot of shit left he could be droppin. Nigga could make 10 more albums with the shit we havent heard yet!
I would give LAX and 8.5 or a 9
Top 5 songs
Letter To The King
Angel
Let Us Live
Bulletproof Dreams
Never Can Say Goodbye
He should get a 9.5 for his songs and 8.5 for his lyrics.
Even tho hes a namedropper, the nigga knows how to drop them names, feel me?
and he got some serious lines Dope Boys, Bulletproof Diaries and Angel, which definetely in my opinion should give this album a 8 at worst. But 7.5 is like .. wrong. If u give him a 10 for his effort then 7.5 is wrong.
1. Paul Wall’s album is just as good as C3
2. Curtis is just as good as the cool & food and liquor
3. TOS is better than Kingdom Come
4. Trilla is way better than T.I vs TIP which is = 2 pitbulls album
5. Fat Joe’s album is a 6.. thats 2 high..LOLOL
Ill never take 1 of there reviews seriously again
STOP dikridin on game!!!!! dikride on nas, he deserves it lmao
this album is 8.5-9.5 / 10 .
but he only had 6 or 7 good songs.
TOS had every song except 2 that were hot so TOS shld git a 8.5/10
DONE.
stop tlkin bout it khuz i juss ended it
& as far as “classic” only time can tell. haven’t had an instant classic come by in a bit and I don’t think this album falls in that category either.
trash if you want but take this in… Classic material is like fine wine… over time it gets better as do classic albums
as for this being his last album thats where my extra 1-1.5 went. if its truly his last album then ther shouldve been just a little more effort so we remember him levin us a classic but this is weak for a final album. like someone else said he made like 200 tracks for LAX you kno he got a stash next to the bud.
as for the name droppin…it is his style and i found it annoyin when he first came out but he perfected his own style. he is clever with the name drops and they make sense with what hes already sayin. overall this review sucked IMO but the album is straight fire hopefully he builds off this and dont sit on it like he say.
If u listen close hes saying it to the dogs because right after he says “fucking dogs, barking and shit” So it wasnt to biggie or tupac u dickheat.
nuff said…lol
These niggas is biased as hell…
I could understand if the writers favortism of 50 was justified, but it CANT….50 is WHACK AS FUCK….(at least NOW he is, and compared to GAME there is no contest…)
cuz I don’t like it…not compared to the other two albums…
PLUS…I saw an interview he did about the album “Recession” and he was talkin all this shit about how the world is in a tough situation, and people don’t want to hear about how rich niggas are..People don’t want to hear about cars, rims, chains…etc…
I was expecting some REAL ASS SHIT from the recession, but what did I get THE SAME OL JEEZY BULLSHIT…
(I’m not saying that jeezy is garbage, or his album is, but I’m jus saying that the title “the recession” does not match what the actual SONGS are talking about…it misleading as hell, and a fuckin FRONT just to get HYPE…Nas gets hype from contrversial album titles too, but at least he backs it up..)
If this album was called Thug Motivation 103, I wouldn’t be complaining, cuz he talking about the same old dopeboy street shit…)
“the trap got a nigga, drunk, still tryin to sober up
wish i had me some money, ide buy me some better luck
might buy me a bigger truck, buy me some more time
aint nobody got it now, need to find me a new grind…”
you want him to rap about being broke or what? how does is sound when a rich nigga raps about being broke? that’s ridiculous. it’s funny that you’re talkin about rappers using album titles for hype, and then you talk about Nas. What do you think “Nigger” was? If you really want get down to it, The Recession is about making money regardless of how the government is fuckin everyone over. Listen to the shit again before you start talkin bullshit.
I listened to it again last night, and its cool…..
the songs are straight, I just don’t like how all his songs are “fast-paced” like that, he slowed it down on #7, and that is the best track on the cd…
the recession is staright tho….
when I first commented I didn’t really listen to it, I was to busy bangin that LAX….WELCOME TO CCCOOOOMMMPPTTTTOONNN!!!! (track 10)
COP IT!
LYRICALTHOUGHT U DICKHEAT; FUCKING HATER! FUCK OUTTA HEEEEEEERE
This bitch didn’t even go into detail about specific songs that were good/bad….
he just gave a real generic ass review that didn’t really say shit specifically about LAX, the review was more about GAME the Artist…Not the ALBUM…
HE PROLLY COPY AND PASTED THE REVIEW FROM ANOTHER SITE….
its funny how much his “style and Lyrics” have changed since his debuit…maybe cuz 50 wrote half of it
and before you start talkin shit like no he didnt…look in the liner notes for the CD and you will see Written by or co written by curtis jackson
speaking the truth
he needs to go back into whateva closet he was in, shut off the light, and pull the trigger
to many features????
he practicly did Docters Advocate by him self give the nigga a break his shit is fukin ill!!
THE DEFS0UND RATER iS 0N S0METHiNG ELSE TH0UGH y0U DUMB FOO!!
FUCK 50 FUCK G-UNIT!! 50 just a greedy cunt and hes bitchin cos g-unit anit shit. He cant make any money off Game, cos Game knows he full of shit so fuck you
