The Vibe Is Gone

by Lyricalthought on June 30th, 2009

Sixteen years after its first publication, Vibe Magazine is reportedly ceasing publication.

According to reports on Dailyfinance.com; the magazine founded by Quincy Jones and Time Warner will be closing its doors for good.

According to the site, despites Vibes attempts to implement some cost cutting plans to save money, which included lay offs, and shortening the work week, the magazine was still unable to make it through this media recession.

It is being reported that the staff were told today June 30th, 2009 that the magazines run was over.

Although the magazine had already implemented cost-cutting measures, including layoffs and a four-day work week, staff today were told that its run was over.

According the the Gossip Blog Gawker.com the Editor Danyel Smith sent a note discussing the ending.

"On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It's a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine's sixteenth anniversary, it's a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you."

Danyel Smiththe former Chief Content Officer VIBE Media Group & Editor in Chief, VIBE.

In its Prime Vibe was one of the most popular magazines for Hip Hop culture. They are now one of the many magazines in print media that have either downsized or have gone out of business. Making it clearer every day that print media may soon be out of style.

Vibe was bought by the Wicks Group in 2006. No information on the last issue was released at the time of press.

Internet is takin’ all the way over, T.V. is next to go down. BET is next, especially after that horrible award show that really wasn’t that much of a MJ tribute.

this is to be expected, when i can go to defsounds or a worldstar and get the same thing plus actuall music FOR FREE i understand why this is happening.

~ INTERNET BLOGS ARE EASIER TO GET AND CAN BE REACHED ALMOST ANYWHERE

the only way thing continue to strive is if it grows, mature, and evolves, vibe didnt do that well enough so the died.

The internet is destroyin everythin in the music game. Sales have decline now the mags thag cover hip hop and othe genres are going out of business. People seem mad about it, but those are the same people that don’t support the artist or the mags.
