M.O.P. Strikes Out, Prepare To Leave G-Unit

by Jokesta on February 7th, 2008

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/132/144/5078/asset.jpgBrooklyn duo M.O.P. has struck out yet again. After being signed to G-Unit for almost three years, the Mash Out Possie has decided it's time to move on.

According to M.O.P.'s long time manager, Laze Elliot, Lil Fame & Billy Danze will be off G-Unit once their new deal goes through.

"As soon as I lock down the new situation, it will be official," Laze tells AllHipHop.com.

The duo, who signed to G-Unit after a fruitless stint with Roc-A-Fella records, were due to release an album under G-Unit in October of last year ('07) however, the plan never materialized due to creative differences.

"I think [if we] would have got our record out earlier, that would have set a clear quality precedent," said Laze.

" All the aesthetic issues would have been solved and we'd be on the second album by now. I knew we were going to have problems though, because 50 needed the group to be in a certain space in order for him to co-sign it."

"He didn't feel Fame was in that space physically or mentally," Laze continued.

“He shouldn't have to [understand Fame], but there are many talented artists in history that you don't know where their talent comes from."

M.O.P.'s last effort, M.O.P. Salutes the St. Marxmen, hit shelfs in 2005 and consisted of several tracks recorded while the group was signed to Roc-A-Fella.

Remember “How about some hardcore” “Brownsville” “Downtown swinger”? All classic shit if u from NYC or somewhere close to it. But if u go too far south like say….anywhere past Delaware then niggas really dont wanna hear dat shit! They cant get it poppin wit a big label because they just dont have mass appeal! They need to sign wit Koch or Lathchkey or sumbody like dat and focus on sellin somewhere between 50 and 100k records on the east coast only! I love M.O.P….but I do understand why alot of niggas dont fuck wit em’

THANK GOD, I told my niggas around the way that when Mobb Deep and M.O.P signed to G-Unit that it was a wrong move. My man said that having Dr. Dre make beats for them would be a big push but as I could remember I don’t think Dre did a beat for Mobb Deep? Anyway G-Unit was going to soften those M.O.P boys up. I am from Brooklyn, Bushwick – BedStuy down the block from Bronsville and niggas in the hood is going to be on some happy shit now that they are off G-Unit and could get back to some Hardcore shit. decision to go with G-Unit?

G-Unit was mainly Fame’s decision but I back Fame on anything he wants to do. My main concern was being signed to an artist because artists have their own careers to manage and we might not get the proper attention. So like I said it was mostly Fame but I don’t think it was a bad decision. G-Unit is still one of the biggest labels out there today in terms of getting attention so I don’t think it was such a bad move for us.

Do you have a personal relationship with 50 Cent?

Yeah, it’s as personal as it is. This is something I wanted the fans to know too because a lot of them were mad that we signed to G-Unit because they might not like 50 or whatever the case may be. But, this is business, man. I didn’t sign to G-Unit to become 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, or one of those guys. I signed with them to be able to get my music to the people that appreciate it. I’ve had countless conversations with 50 and we pretty much see eye to eye.

What is up with these stories about 50 trying to get you guys in the gym, trying to get you to lose weight? These stories have been floating around since you signed to G-Unit.

I really don’t know, you would have to ask 50 about that. I’m sitting in the gym right now. It’s something that I do anyway. Sometimes I fall off and sometimes I don’t, but in 50’s defense, if you own a store a something is out of place on the shelf, you’re gonna try and put it in the right place. That’s just the way you make money. 50 didn’t come in the game when we first came in the game.

When we came in the game was when people first started thinking they could make some money in the game, when people first started having that thought. You gotta respect 50’s opinion if he wants to make money. I mean I didn’t sign with G-Unit so I could not make money. And they didn’t want us over there so they could make no money. It’s only business bro, that’s it.

Do you feel, at the end of that day, that the G-Unit affiliation will broaden your audience?

Yeah, I cant even bullshit on that. I was just thinking about that. I mean before G-Unit even came in to existence we had traveled the world but since we’ve gone out with them we’ve been places we’ve never been and the people were happy to see us. That exposes us to a different pocket of the world where maybe they wanted to hear M.O.P but they couldn’t get us full-fledged. I’m happy about everything brother.

50 signed them to get street cred, then just left them on a shelf, I aint from the N.Y. but we bump M.O.P. here too. Thats why cats can’t feel bad for them, they dont get any exposure outside of the Ny and east coast. They need to sign to Koch, for real. People sleep hard on MOP. They are some of the best and most passionate doing hardcore. They have to bo one of the most slept on duo in the game. Ante Up should have been a break out song for them. With the right marketing and promotion the should have been much bigger. If three six mafia can make money, then MOP should be able to make more. I do not mean any disrespect to three six either, they have there appeal. Cash Money would be a horrible move. Would probably mean another three to five years and no product. All Weezy and Baby, all the time…." I am my own drug…."

I think its obvious now that M.O.P ARE not meant to go global because maybe they are too hard for todays market or maybe they should just stay underground like they have always been and to me that seems to suit them best. thia is probably gonna happen at the next label they move to, if i was them i would just go indie KOCH, LANDSPEED anyone.

They never should have been on G-Unit in the 1st place. 1st, It’s a young mans game & they’re old. 2nd, the rap game rearly give second chances to pop this late in a career. 3rd, It is no way for any company to market these dudes for they could sell. 4th, they’re G-Unit artist not G-Unit soldiers so there wasn’t anyway they was going to ride with 50 in his battles. 5th, they’re old!

They’re in the record selling business. The record business don’t care if you legendary. With the exception of Snoop, Jay Z & Dr. Dre, you can’t name who been around for at least 10 years that still sell records. LL Cool J is a special case he appeals to females. Do you think these fat old niggas going to appeal to females? Only song they’re know for is ante up from 98. I don’t know thier situation personally. But from being a producer/label head/artist/mixtape DJ/etc…. I will say this…. alotta artists get lazy. They want the gold and the glory but aren’t willing to work hard enough for it… Truth be told, the last time these dudes hit big (as far as I’ve seen) is with that song “Ante Up”. That was a LONG time ago. There’s no telling who’s to blame…. On one hand, 50 could’ve pulled a Diddy and he is too busy focusing on his own career to give his labelmates thier proper support…. On another hand, MOP could just be lazy/unfocused/unmotivated/uninterested in thier own project. These artists need to learn that there is a BIG difference between having respect from your peers and ACTUALLY SELLING RECORDS…… With all that being said…. this is sad but true…. I’ve seen 50 talking more about Souljah Boy then his own labelmates…… I’ve heard 50 say… “Oh yeah, I signed so and so”…… but after that I never hear 50 really mention them again…. weird

Dude, MOP are HARD. My peoples love thier style, but I have to agree 10 years or so since your last Video/hit does raise some questions. Like, where the fuck are ya’ll now?? I didn’t hear you on all them DJ Whoo Kid Mixtapes. Thats a sign that the label aint helpin you out right there. Yall should’ve got out after being signed for 3 years on collecting dust on the shelf at Interscope. Unless he advanced them tons of money(which I doubt) why did they stay?? Well one argument is that if Koch really wanted them, and 50 really didn’t have any interest in developing them, Koch would’ve had them by now. That didn’t happen so you have to wonder…Did Koch realize what 50 might have realized, such as MOP are past thier prime, unmotivated, just happy to be signed by G-unit. Just happy to have a deal with a major, even if they knew 50 wasn’t doing shit with them. If thats true then MOP can’t complain, cuz they just did what most lazy artists do when they get a new deal, SINK.
