Mixtape 101: Big Sean - UknowBigSean Vol 2
by on April 27th, 2009
Call me late, but the first time I heard 21 year old Detroit MC Big Sean was back a few months ago on a track called 'Who Knows' featuring Mike Posner.
His microphone presence and lyrics immediately stood out and caught my ear.
So as soon as I could, I jumped online to search for some older material of his and more information on the kid.
Sean signed with Kanye West’s GOOD Music in 2007, and then in 2008 signed with Island Def Jam.
That same day I received an email from Mick Boogie stating that he was prepping the release of Big Seans second mixtape entitled 'uknowbigsean vol 2.' Needless to say I was very excited about the release and planned to monitor my email very closely over the next few days in anticipation of receiving the download link.
Now alot of time I over hype myself , and rarely do the mixtapes ever turn out to be as great as I had envisioned them. But this was definitely one of the mixtapes that did NOT disappoint.
This mixtape definitely has a summer feel to it, something you would ride around the beach bumpin'. The production, as with any G.O.O.D music project, is stellar. Big Sean's style almost reminds you of Kanye West back before the Ego and the Auto-Tune. Also just as I sad last week with Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean has that style that can appeal to the hardcore hip-hop fans like myself, and also to the hipster crowd.
As long as Kanye doesn't shelf his artists and put them on the back burner, we should be hearing alot more from Big Sean in the near future. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the mixtape below and let me know what YOU think about it...
Overall Rating (1-5): 4.0
Hottest Track(s): #8 Who Knows, #9 Rollin, #11 Billionaire
Weakest Track: #2 Into (Not a good attention grabber for the 1st track)
