Kanye West 808's & Heartbreak

Album: 808's & Heartbreak
Kanye Premieres the new genre of music Techno hop
It is said that the most vulnerable and most irrational point in any man's life is the point just after a heartbreak.
For a man, a broken heart means many things because along with feelings being hurt and the heart being broken, a man's pride takes a serious hit.
Most men hide from these feelings for fear of looking weak, and in return they react irrationally in other ways. But the truth remains the same and the hurt is still prevalent.
Rapper and super-producer Kanye West is the current subject of heartbreak but unlike most cases he, instead of losing one, lost two of the most important woman in his life.
The kind of loss that would break a regular man down to a point of no return has instead produced us with a form of art that we may or may not be willing to accept. Kanye's pain and loneliness is splattered across his latest offering 808's & Heartbreak. So instead of dwelling in his own sorrow, we have the chance to help him put it back together. This review will be unlike any other, because unlike any other album this album was more for Kanye himself than it was for ourselves. So we will take a numerical look into what Kanye must feel about this album.
Production - 8
You can take the ignorant or frustrated fan approach and turn away your ear from every musical production that comes from this album, but whether you like the lyrics or not, every single beat is a head nodder. Heavy drums with bass heavy after-effects, and the robotic rhythms of auto-tone induced sound effects give this album a very different sound, but it is not one that is horrible. The production seems techno driven with a hip hop flair giving it a tech-hop sound. The bass of the production leans more towards the simple side, but the way they all seem to blend into each other makes for a very smooth sound, as you can take out all of the lyrics and run every beat and they would transfer very smoothly. The technique seems to be original in the sense that most artist have never used this, but catchy because it is something that can become very popular in the coming years of hip hop.
Lyrics - 7.5
How do you judge the lyrics of someone who is basically pouring their heart out on every single track? That is the dilemna that every single reviewer should have trouble decyphering. This album is clearly Kanye's venting session and in this production it feels like he took no time to think about what the listeners would say when hearing this album for the first time. Instead of hard lyrics this album offers an auto-tone voice with constant reference to lonesome time and hurt feelings. Punchlines are non-existent and wordplay is clearly an afterthought. If you were looking for hard lyrics and catchy rhymes you should check the other album releases this week. 808's & Heartbreak is a tech-hop album filled with harmonies that give it a blatant undertone of R&B.
Songs - 8
The songs on this album take you on a journey through the heart of a broken hearted man. After listening to this album, a legitimate listener will come up with one of two conclusions. The first one being that Kanye is lonely, or that he is seriously depressed and potentially suicidal. I chose the latter. He lost the love of his life and his number one girl (his mother) all in the same year, and with the life that he lives, it is almost impossible to find someone who will be sincere in her feelings for him, or love him inspite of himself like his mother did. Kanye realizes this, so the majority of the album is speaking about those feelings while channeling them into a techno-hop auto-tone induced rant. While some people cry over the loss of a loved one in the privacy of their own homes. We are all witnesses to the many tears that Kanye has spilled over everyone that is no longer in his life. So for every track that plays through our speaker, a million tears have been shed for the feelings that motivated the production of hit.
Conclusion-8
At the conclusion of this album many listeners will be confused and utterly disappointed with this album. He may well likely lose millions of fans because of this, but for those who actually listened to the lyrics and read between the lines, the reaction should be different, because you, like me, will understand just how important this album was for Kanye. You will understand how this album is and was more for him than anyone else. Yes, we have the ability to purchase this album, and we can judge it any way we want. But it remains a fact that Kanye's production of this album was clearly the reaction of a broken heart. Through this work he say's that he was able to have fun with music again, and that was all he cared about because he made the work that he was the happiest with. So in Kanye's eyes, this is the perfect album, and for those who have suffered a serious heartbreak, or lost a love one, and can feel where Kanye is coming from this is a 10...plain and simple it has no flaws.
BUT... through the eyes of the realist and the reviewers such as myself, there is no such thing as a classic album anymore. Especially with a musical production such as this. 808's & Heartbreak took a drastic left turn in the musical highway intersection of Hip Hop, some might even argue that Kanye seriously put his career on the line with this album. But after listening to it several times it is clear that this is not bad as many would like to say. Kanye took a big chance, and in the process created his own genre, "Techno-hop". The true judgement of music is the artist's willingness to stray away from the norm and push his artistry to another level. Kanye does this in this album, whether we agree or not. For that alone this album deserves praise, but for numbers sake we will give it an 8.

c’mon now be consistent
Gggg Unit!!!
who hasn’t seen the tracklist
SICK! old 50 is back!!!!
808’s should be like a 6 of 10
its a very opinionated album
i think its based on the problems hes having with his mothers death
o well old yeezy is back come June
oh and his shoes are fresh Air Yeezy’s
808s are the most over used drums in urban music
auto tune is used on 50% of the tracks that come out
he gets 1 outta 10 for originality
im fine with u sellin out kanye but dont claim 2 be original
On a side note, Luda’s album was solid as usual. The sound with Nas and Jay is fuckin classic tho.
i hope this is just a one time thing from mr west
His lyrics were poor. But I saw the decline from late registration to graduation in that department so I wasn’t expecting much.
As for kanye when I was younger I ignored his attitude cause he got the job done. Sorta like how I felt about allen iverson and terrell owens, but this nigga has officially become a tumorous cancer in all things sane.
He’s gotta stop invoking heroes of the past. No one can be jimi hendrix or bigger than the rolling stones. Kanye continously praises this album as up there in impact, then him and his fans say “its from the heart so it has diplomatic immunity from criticism”. Makes absolutely no sense! And it also shows how he lacks knowledge of that whole time period and the music that came out of it.
Talking about how “classic” your album is reminds me of the trashiest girl at the bar talking about how “classy” she is as she smokes her cigarette and takes a double shot of southern comfort. It’s delusion at its finest.
There will never be another Michael Jordan, Ali, James Brown, Michael Jackson etc so kanye should focus on being himself.
I’ve heard comparisons of this album to Andre 3000’s love below which is laughable. Difference is we saw Andre making that album 5 years ahead if you actually follow hip-hop. And that album was a classic. Commercially and critically. Listen to “A life in the day of Andre 3000”..A display of lyricism, creativity and insight of a man who is truly ahead of his time. So please don’t hip-hop fans stop the intellectual violence lol.
That’s the thing. This album wasn’t creative. Of course Kanyes production will be on display but from lyrical content to the use of auto-tune, this was “rappa ternt singa part 2” mixed with a poor attempt at becoming hip-hop’s Radiohead.
We already have hip-hop Radiohead. NERD, Andre 3000, M.I.A. The roots, etc..And they have the integrity and maturity to shut the fuck up about it. If your going to offer someone something different you better bring substance and abusing auto-tune at this point is expected so it took away from the creative aspect.
I think kanye got caught up in the hype of his reception on the “put on” verse which was one the best verses in a long time in hip-hop. But it had nothin to do with the auto-tune. It was his lyrical content and the auto-tune was secondary.
The auto-tune is the substance and the lyrical content has become secondary which has led to the disaster known as 808 and Heartbreak.
Its okay if your favorite rapper makes a poor album. Mine made…lol what was Jay-Z’s album after The Black Album??! I really can’t think of it cuz it was bad but he redeemed himself with American Gangster. Now it’s Kanye’s turn.
I cant put a number too it but I do love the albulm
Before I first listened to it, I wanted nothing more than to declare the album as trash, and go on about how Ye needs to return to his college dropout days and cut the emo bullshit…But after a few listens I had to admit…I liked the album from start to finish…nothing even remotely close to classic…but definitely good nonetheless
Props on the review lyricalthought, I agree with the rating
PRODUCTION 10
the beats and quality and precision and genius of these melodies is Genius. lol i remember when defsounds first put these songs up on here cats were sayin’ there’s no bass!
yeah, it’s fuckin impossible for your little ipod or computers speakers to pick up the low’s on these 808’s! these mofo’s slap in the whip, and just sounds like pure quality music.
anyone with a good speaker system that has played these songs know exactly what i’m talking about. yall cats that only heart these songs on the computer probably think im lying and making this up… i assure you im not.
lol then how do you want to look at it? I mean Kanye did say he wanted 808’s and Heartbreak to rival the Beatles. So he should get his wish.
Let’s compare it to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”..If not one of the top 10 greatest cd’s of all time, the Beatles classic went on to sell 30 million worldwide. Not only an innovation in the way we record today but a huge commercial success.
Lol and don’t blame the mediocre 443,000(kanye sold 1st week) on the economy. The best selling vehicle in the past 4 months has been a SUV!!(ford f-150), so the demographic he was going for could afford it. It just wasn’t good. It just doesn’t connect.
Let’s put it in the rock realm or adult 40! Lol since Kanye didn’t play any instruments on this, what’s the difference between him and Rob Thomas? Rob Thomas can actually sing and his music actually goes somewhere.
You can recite the chorus, but you can’t recite one verse off of the album. That’s the definition of a forgettable pop album.
So let’s put it in the pop genre. Beyonce sold 482,000 copies in her first week. And her song “If I were a Boy”, although not an original concept, is formatted and better performed than any song off of 808 and Heartbreaks.
You want experimental or pop art, try N.E.R.D.’s “Seeing Sounds”…Now that could be “over your head” or “innovative”..No I got 808 and Heartbreaks very well..I got boring music, repetitive music and just another coaster for my coke and rum.
Lol “kingdom come”.. Now I remember and it’s safe to say it was a bad album. All we remember from it was Danica Patrick and a Lil Wayne freestyle lol(which he killed)
In jay-z and nas’s defense they both maxed out lyrically during the epic battle. At least mentally. It was a fight to the death.
Top 5:
1. Street Lights
2. Coldest Winter
3. Paranoid
4. Welcome To Heartbreak
5. Love Lockdown
Good looks man. I’m glad someone actually read what I wrote. Not the sensitive trash monsters that frequent this site and screan “hater”. You can tell who’s actually made music and who hasn’t.
I love kanyes earlier work but I don’t like people trying to pass this record off as an overlooked creative masterpiece. Ghostface killa’s "supreme clientel(spelling) was an overlooked creative masterpiece. This felt unfinished.

Stay up and good review!
@lyrical thought
You can tell when an artist doesn’t make his best work when him and his fans insult the intelligence of those who don’t like it.
Jay-z tried to do this with kingdom come sayin “it was meant for those 25 and older”…lol whatever makes you sleep well at night! But he did the right thing and worked harder at his craft and dropped a solid piece of work to quiet those critics with American Gangster"

but luda album gets a 10 out of 10…..
What person HASN’T went through a break up?
Who hasn’t lost one?
So to say the select people who have been through serious break ups and losing one will think this album is a 10. Is like like saying we are aren’t humans.
Instead of judging the album…this interview seemed to judge Kanye. And trying to force people to give him a pass for his awful music he’s put out.
I feel your pain Kayne. I truly do. I’m sure alot of other people do. I feel 808’s & Heartbreaks the lifestlye.
As far as 808’s & Heartbreaks the album. Its awful.
Its not about the singing. Kayne has sung many times in the pass. Its not about the auto tune. Though like it or not it is played out. Yet and still, Kanye is currently its BEST user.
The beats we’re bad. Wether they were rap, pop art, techno hop. so don’t point of the genre to try to explain why the beats sound the way they do.
Some of them are okay. None stand out. And there are more bad beats then good beats. An 8 is to high.
The conclusion is more like a 7. we don’t judge the album on the artists brain. We judge it solely on the music. And its no way you can tell me this album is an 8.
Imagine how weird Hail Mary was when it was released. We didn’t look to Pac for his brain logic for making the song. In fact that whole album is an example of taking a drastic left. from many of the beats to the lyrics.
People didn’t ask what Jay-Z was thinkin when he made Kingdom Come, They didn’t see a middle age man struggling to with whether or not he was still relevant.
So don’t ask.
You shouldn’t have to if the music is good. And thats just real talk.
Peace!
808’s is wak as fuk!
that shyt aint even Hip-Hop! c’mon YE drop a real Hip-Hop album!!!you had your fun but that was bullshyt!
n how the fuk is this better than LAX..yall dont understand that LAX WILL go down as a classik for the WESTCOAST..so FUK all haterz!
