Is Joe Budden A Guinea Pig?
by on February 25th, 2009
So Budden's highly and long overdue sophomore LP hit stores yesterday receiving a good amount of positive reviews. I thought the album is great, though after listening to "Pray For Me," everything else on the album seems subpar. As many of you noted, the last "conversation with god" track that carried as much meaning was DMX's "The Convo," I think Budden's came off better however because of the aggressiveness on Joeys part when questioning the big man.
Anyways, I digress from my original question. The Padded Room represents alot of things for Budden, but it may represent alot more for us as a whole. How so? Well, in today's day and age where everything is digital, the internet rules all, and records aren't necessarily flying off the shelves, The Padded Room will answer one pretty big question. How much can a rapper sell with JUST the web behind them? I'm not saying Budden fans are only online, I'm saying 90% of his fanbase are "internet soldiers." So can these internet soldiers land Joey on the Billboards?
I think that's the question Amalgam Digital looked to answer, using Joe as their guinea pig.
Budden is without a doubt one of the hardest working rappers on this here internets. Consistently dropping Freestyles, Mixtapes, collabos, hell, the guy even created his own reality show (as shitty as it is).
Budden is the biggest internet whore out of any rapper and it has paid off. His fanbase is growing day by day thanks to his own doing.
He's one of the few rappers that internet heads undeniably support.
But will this translate to sales?
There has been very little non-digital marketing for this album done--it dropped without a video for the first single, radio airplay in New York isn't at its best, and it's barely mentioned outside of the web.
If Padded Room manages to push some serious numbers, the model for releasing an album and building an artist will completely change. Not that it hasn't changed in the last couple of years, but this might be the eye opener labels who are still stuck in their old ways need. If it works, it can revolutionize the industry..if it doesn't....then well at least Budden finally dropped a second lp.

im not AT ALL sayin that its a bad album, its just my opinion and my preferences
i know how to appreciate good music at the same time, and his album IS good music
but the album was nutz! not all the tracks were that crazy tho, I LOVE pray for me, angels in my life, and in my sleep the most tho.
but daym Joey is a real MC, one of the few artists who put out the album with no punchline talk, just concepts and REAL shit
INTERNET SOLDIERS!!!
If Im an artist, I want to sell a lot. Shows you its a lot of people out there listening to the shit you put ya hard work into
“If u aint in this rap game, for muthafuckin cash mayne, then wat is ya muthafuckin purpose”
To be broke even though u droppin good music. Fuck that. If Budden was to sell 70k on Soundscan. Congrats, he deserve it
70K? on his first day? SERIOUSLY???
Your Friendly Neighborhood
it’ll make my collection look good
smh @ people’s ignorance
I like how niggas try to clown this dude joey for that pump it up song when they know for a fact the liked that shit…he dropped sum barz in that shit
“Ma tellin me she dont give Brain like im stupid, You can do anything if you put your mind to it”
I still say that to bitches….
www.straightouttahiphop.com
jersey stand the fuck up!
jersey bitch!
See when Kanye puts out and album they press up a million copies then do these expensive videos and appreances which he has to pay the label back so if he only moves 100,000 than hes in the RED or in DEabt to the label which is were the term FLOP came from…
But if budden label only did 70,000, minimal promo, and is sellin more of the net…
then like my dude said above me he could easily sell 20,000 and make more then some of these rappers that sold 100,000
THINK BOUT IT!
But he doesnt care about havin an image therefore he’s not marketable!!!!!
People who buy albums dont give a fuck about beats & ryhmes
Even if he sells 50k he’s still ahead of the game cause everything is low cost. That’s why no big video, no billboards & expensive marketing, no ass kissin the DJs or throwin em 10 stacks to play the single every hour (yes this does happen).
The reason artists consider big numbers like going gold or platinum a success is because they spend outragous amounts on videos & promotion & shit that is irrelevant nowadays. Maybe not irrelevant, but less significant. Who watches videos besides YouTube? What channel even plays whole videos anymore?
To me, since he is an artist that always comes wit the truth, & won’t ever dumb down his music for those that can’t comprehend what he’s talkin about, he is Hip Hop & everything Hip Hop is supposed to be in 2009.
To ignorant ass people that hate on Budden…FUCK YOU. You’d prolly get stuck in a glass room full of rocks, so go kick some. ONE
do yoself sum good and stimulate ya mind wit sum real good muzik from da soul
“Yung Mayo is a FAGGOT” end quote!
its sold out at all the local cd stores
reppin jerseeeeeeyyyyyyyyyy
“If u aint in this rap game, for muthafuckin cash mayne, then wat is ya muthafuckin purpose”
-——————————What an ever loving ass-clown you are, as a consumer what stake do you have in an artist sales? You gettin a hard on when your favorite artist goes platinum? Who gives a shit..you homo dick-riding stan.
-And you quote one of the outlaws..ha Some of the weakest rappers/hype-men in history. They were lucky Pac put them on.
i dont really see the point of paying to download the songs to put them on a blank cd anyway ya kno? if im buying it i want the official shit!
and if you do that makes you a contradiction… cause why wouldnt you buy it in the store then??? cd sales didnt decline cause niggas got tired of not having to burn a cd… or cause they was forced to look at cool ass cd art… niggas stopped buying cds cause they found out they could get the music without buying it… lets not forget that
