Eminem- Relapse Review
by on May 19th, 2009
Album: Relapse
Eminem's return to Hip Hop.
I've been listening to Eminem's latest effort- - and undeniably one of the most anticipated records in the last 5 years, non-stop for about two straight weeks now. With many critics already handing this album the death sentence, it wasn't the easiest task to review it.
Should it be judged with the understanding of what the artist is presumably trying to accomplish or should it be judged as a standard release. I'm going to go ahead and mix it up a bit.
With the exception of The Re-up mixtape, Eminem has been out of action since 2004. Prior to his hiatus, Eminem remained in the public eye whether in good or bad form.
His albums, prior to Encore, were arguably all heavily introspective and informative in regards to his life. From problems with celebrities to problems with his family, Eminem bared his soul with no shame for his fans in his music.
So it was to no surprise what we expected to hear on Relapse. With everything that has happened in his life during his time away from music and the public, it's fair to say we were expecting the same self-exposing and at times self-deprecating story telling witnessed in his previous releases.
But, that's not exactly what was handed to us. Instead, we received a record reminiscent to that of the Slim Shady LP. Which in a sense, isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just that the Slim Shady LP was coming from an artist which we as listeners had no expectations from. So how does this album fair exactly?
Lyrics - 8.5
Eminem rarely disappoints when it comes to lyrics. His wordplay, flow, and technique on this album are uncanny. Mix, matching, bending, & stretching words for a smooth coherent flow that is constantly switched throughout the album is a feat not many artists are capable of.
It's a rare occurrence where you'll hear Em use the same style on a track throughout Relapse.
However, technical attributes aside, the lyrical content of the album, while at times amusing, takes away from the package.
The over-stuffing of ludicrous and outlandish subject matters actually leave a lackluster taste behind and at times leave you wondering what the hell the guy's talking about.
Production - 9.0
With Dr. Dre behind the majority of the production, it's no surprise the tracks are top quality. From the bouncy vibes of "Insane" and "Hello" to the mellow laid back feel of "Same Song & Dance, " the sound diversity of the album take a wide range. There are a couple of tracks that stand out production wise. The intro to the inspirational ballad "Beautiful" comes to mind immediately as it sets the precise mood for the track's message.
Overall, Relapse is packed with great production. Some songs however take a bit to get used to. At first listen, "Underground" sounds like a fall down a shady (no pun) set of stairs . As you listen to the track more and more however, you're able to follow the scheme better.
Songs- - 8.0
Arguably the weakest point of the album is the content of the songs. As previously mentioned, the majority of fans were awaiting something more than random killings, rapes, and drug use.
Relapse plays out like a concept album. A scary movie in which Marshall Mathers plays Slim Shady--rather an extreme version of the Slim Shady we've seen in the past.
The album opens up as he falls into a nightmare with "3 AM," from there, we're taken to the origins more or less of where Slim Shady came from--the result of a drug addict mother and a sexually abusive uncle found in "My Mom" and "Insane."
From "Bagpipes From Baghdad" through "Same Song & Dance," Em shows his psychotic feelings towards women--no doubt thanks to his upbringings by his drug addict of a mother.
After "We Made You," we're taken through the drug addiction he developed with "Medicine Ball," and "Stay Wide Awake."
We are slowly shifted back to the psychopath murderer Slim Shady with a hilarious verse from Em as Christopher Reeves in "Medicine Ball" and one of the most creative verses I've heard in an album so far this year in "Must Be The Ganja."
How many people you know who can name every serial killer who ever existed in a row.
Put em in chronological order, beginning with Jack The Ripper.
Name the time and place from the body, the bag the zipper.
Location of the woods where the body was dragged and then dumped.
The trunk that they was stuffed in. The model, the maker, plate, which lake they found em and how they attacked the victim.
Say which murder weapon was used to do what and which one, which knife, and which gun.
What kid, what wife, and what nun. Don't stop, I like this is fun, the night's just begun.
After warping back into Slim Shady--mind you Em is still in the aforementioned nightmare, we're treated to two tracks which one would hope lay the groundwork for Relapse 2.
In "Deja Vu," paramedics attempt to wake Em up from the nightmare he's in.
Em finally delivers the story we've been yearning to hear since he left. What's been going on with his life? Where has he been?..We get our answers here. We are walked through the development of his drug addiction and the effects it had on his life.
So I take vicodin splash, it hits my stomach then aah,
couple of weeks go by and it ain't even like I'm getting high
Now I need, is not to feel sick, yeah I'm getting by
Wouldn't even be taking this shit if DeShaun didn't die
oh yeah, there's an excuse, you lose Proof so you use
there's new rules, it's cool if it's helping you to get through
It's 12 noon, ain't no harm in self inducing a snooze
What else is new, fuck it what would Elvis do in your shoes
Now here I am 3 months later, full blown relapse
'Just get high until the kids get home, holmes, relax
and since I'm--convinced that I'm an Insom--niac
I need these pills to help me sleep, so I take 3 naps
just to be able to function throughout the day, lets see
that's an ambient each nap, how many Valiums 3?
and that would jot to about 3 hours sleep
ok so now you--see
the reason how come, he
has taken 4 years to just put an album, beats
see me and you, we almost had the same outcome Heath
cause that christmas, you know the whole pneumonia thing?
It was balognia, was it the methodonia think?
Em then continues with the inspirational ballad "Beautiful" which is reminiscent of "Sing For The Moment." Both amazing tracks with incredible messages.
Conclusion - 8.5
As I said in the intro, if put into the perspective of a concept album, this release plays out perfect.
Sadly, that's not the case-this isn't supposed to be a concept album for Eminem. It is his long awaited return to the genre that has so severely missed him over the last couple of years.
We got so little actual Eminem content and such a vast amount of psychopathic Slim Shady rhetoric that it felt a bit flat and lack luster.
Is it a bad album? Not at all. However, to fully appreciate it, you may have to listen to it more than once.
As I mentioned before, following the album from beginning to end, it plays like an origin story and ends on such a high note, you can't expect anything but good things for the sequel.
It is what Batman Begins is to The Dark Knight. It sets the stage and tone for the classic Relapse 2 may be.

I hope he can drop a classic in Relapse 2, Because this definately is not what i expected from Em’ since he been gone for 4 years. And i still dont think it will outsell Graduation or Carter III first week sales.
then your going to be disappointed cuz Em is past his prime
i mean c’mon, i luv the homie (no homo) but if you really think 9 years after he dropped the MMLP he will come up with another classic then your dreaming
i was never expecting Relapse to be a classic, you cant just expect that kind of consistency from any artist
without a doubt this was still a good album, much better than a lot of the crap rappers are dropping today
with that said, get off your asses and go cop Relapse niggas!
sucks
real homo ish album
Jokesta, Looks like you beefed up the scores and are willing to hold Em’s hand until Relapse 2 comes out (which you haven’t heard one song off)…even people held off opinions of The Dark Knight until they saw previews of the Joker… You better hope Em doesn’t give you Dumb and Dumber 2 instead (which would fit more with “the voices”)
i’d give relapse a 8.5+, pushing a 9… you really do have to give it a few plays to appreciate it, at first I was disappointed, but em really is a genius
past his prime or not, em will always deliver a quality album, and this will always be of a higher calibre that the majority of rapper’s material out now
a clouding problem is that because of em’s quality and potential, the expectation of him is so high, anything less than the classic, that’s been waited for, will be jumped on…
…anyone else throwing together an album like this would end in their grammy
ohh and did anyone else notice the lack of features? compare that to rick ross…. kind of miss obie not being on an em album though
Your are mistaken, Relapse is already a classic.
Relapse 2 will be a Masterpiece.
ive listen 2 enough watered down jackasses spitten random lines about money and bitches, its nice for once 2 c someone just not hold there tongue and spit wat they want.
the review is perfect (the scoring that is) and even tho i dont agree with someone of the points he makes, b all that matters in the end is the score n that was right on point
Relapse is a hot album
The Cool & Food & Liquor get 8.0 though….WTF!
Jokesta, I understand that you are rating the albums as fair as possible, but you should add some sort of user review widget.
I’d say relapse anywhere from 7.3-8 is fine with me, disappointing yes, awful no.
There’s a monster inside of me, it’s quite ugly, and it frightens me,
But they can’t see what I can see, there’s a vacancy in my tummy
Its making me play hide and seek like Jason, I’m so hungry
She’s naked, see no privacy, but I can see she wants me,
So patient, see I tried to be, but gee why does she taunt me,
Pulls the drapes and she goes right to sleep, and I creep right through the front, see,
So blatantly, but silently, cuz I know that she’s sound sleep,
“Who’s waking me so violently, and why is he on top of me,
He’s raping me,” she tries to scream, “somebody please get him off me,
He’s taping me, he’s biting me, he’s laughing like its funny,”
She’s scraping me, she’s fighting me, she’s scratching like some dumb freak,
Escaping me, no dice you see, I might just be Ted Bundy,
Or Satan, gee what a sight to see, I’m dancing in my red panties,
I’m crazy, but its alright with me, man life can be so empty,
Stay away from me, cuz I’m dancing to quite a different drum beat
– Some Lyrics from “Stay Wide Awake” are perfect. I’ve never seen rhymes structured so well and delivered so flawlessly. Or maybe its the weed talking. Either way, I haven’t felt Em’s shit since high school, but all that’s changed now. This song is fucking classic. I haven’t felt shit like this since Pac, and that’s real talk.
– Big Freeze
You do know that Jokesta didn’t review either of those albums right…smh

“Who, WE Niguh!!!”
He need some more real sons like Beatiful on there for that in my opinion, however all in all, a great album, and you definitely gotta cop it if you like good music, period.

EMINEM BE GOAT
Wtf is up with that bullshit u speak. I bet you got a bunch of dead rabbits in your yard or some shit, fuckin pyscho.
Anyways man this was well written. My favorite track is “hello”. I like the beat and the way Em rides on it. The game has changed so much since Em was out, I kinda feel he’s a bit out of touch.
Its summer-time. Memorial Day, The 4th. People want to have a good time, have a couple of drinks, bar BQ and shit, your family is around. You know Em’s cd will be nowhere to be found playing.
Gotta throw on that Big Pun ft. Donell Jones “Its so hard” for the summer.
This album is whatever. If it was for a movie I’d get the concept, but to set up the next release?! Nice marketing ploy but I don’t care about u that much. Easily top 5 or top 10 ever, but everyone in the Top 5 is over the hill.
Deuces
I think you guys are letting your fandom get away from facts. We love it of course, but no new fans do. I don’t hear anyone bumping this shit bruh. I mean no one. lol A milli in a week? Forget about it. Maybe 400k and that’s generous.
Em’s albums have always been for when you’re hotboxing someone’s ride – crusing with your friends or bumpin that shit riding solo
“see me and you we almost had the same outcome HEATH” … he’s talking about heath ledger. get it? i think you should go on and fix that. beautiful, underground, stay wide awake were incredible as well.. hello insane old times sake great tracks. best album of the year for me…
you could of mentioned the 3rd verse from 3 AM… simply amazing.
I love this album from begining to end..Em’s lyrically talent is incredible. I could care less about how everyones been rating his album, its a great album…about an 8.5 – 9 in my eyes. Good shit Em.
The juxtaposition of the laidback beat and the violent lyrics is
miiiindblowing.
DRE DID WHAT MOST PRODUCERS CAN’T DO……CREATE A WHOLE ALBUM LIKE A FILM WITH DIVERSE SOUNDS……LISTEN TO THAT UNDERGROUND BEAT SO CLEAN
The only way this album is not a classic, is if you put your hopes up too high and if your listening to it simply to decide whether it’s a classic or not. Why not listen to each song for what’s it’s worth, put urself in that mind fram and you’ll probably like it even more (especially if u do put urself in that mind frame cause nobody describes shit like this guy man haha). I’m sayin this cause I did the same shit at first listen. Then I went back to it, and I had a better opinion the second time around.
i aint listened 2 the album yet, im waiting till i buy it
Uh…isn’t it me or does anyone else find it bad that When you hear Relapse your only left saying “I can’t wait for Relapse 2” That’s not good.
I guess Slim Shady has returned, STill waiting for Eminem though….
Peace!
my darling is a crazy track if you haven’t heard it.
Proves tha first part of my comment a few post down, and ppl act like I just make this ish up

LOL @ THIS BROKE ASS POVERTY LINE MOTHERFUCKER AND A TRANNY!!!!!!! HAHAHAHHAHA
Em is a vet naturally he been out, he’s proven, and he pushin 40…Wayne a vet bcuz of his catalogue and bcuz of how HipHop is today; he too popular love and hate so he’s saturated which puts him at a high status even though he young. Both will sell and do so greatly but dnt expect nothing bcuz nowadays they just rappin they phenomenal so u may luck up and catch a few Birdman Jr or Stan type tracks but expecting it everytime is silly.

P.S. WHEN I HEAR THE ILLITERATE PHRASE “3 A.M. IN THE MORNING” THAT KINDA KILLS ANY DESIRE TO KEEP LISTENING
beatiful .. insane. my mom …CRAZY
CANT WAIT TO HEAR THE REST
Jokesta’s right on point with the scoring. Classic. No. Dope. Without a doubt. To be honest, I was actually skeptical, not because I thought it would be bad (there’s honestly no such thing as an eminem bad album, even Encore had a few good tracks) I was just scared it would be somewhat like Encore, plus he’s gone for 4 years, I didnt know whether he still had it or not. But here’s my score for the songs.
3 AM-8.0 Great way to start the album
My Mom-8.0 This dude talkin bout his mom isnt unusual but havin positive thoughts about her, whoa!
Insane-10.0 Crazy ass lyrics, in a way, reminds me of “My Dad’s Gone Crazy”
Bagpipes From Baghdad-9.0 Addicting.
Hello-10.0 Dope beat
Same Song & Dance-10.0 Laid back
We Made You-5.0 The weakest song on here
Medicine Ball-8.0 Interesting cut
Stay Wide Awake-10.0 My favorite
Old Time’s Sake-7.0 Could’ve done without Dre’s verse
Must Be The Ganja-9.0 Dope
Deja Vu-10.0 Great storytelling from Em as usual
Beautiful-10.0 didn’t know what to feel on an Em track calle “Beautiful” But yeah this is “Sing For The Moment II”
Crack A Bottle-7.0 Not my type of song
Underground-10.0 Sick shit, that dark sound damn
Bonus Tracks:
My Darling-10.0 Replace “We Made You” with this.
Careful What You Wish For-10.0 Replace “Crack A Bottle” with this, dope record with deep emotion
Overall-87% B+
Final words: Really good album buy the man himself, this makes me want Relapse 2 even more. Go Cop This Album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dope review
but the album grew on me, the songs are a fuckin album..unlike most artists have been doing for the last 5 or so years..Em has made an ALBUM..the shit flows..you have to listen to it from start to beginning..and if you do that, it will appear to you that this album is a work of art..and Em hasnt lost anything..
he even said in his interviews..he hasnt lost his ability to flow and talk normally..hes fuckin bored with the english language!!he’s fucked with it SO much..that he cant even rap normally..that shows you..dude is a LEGEND..so if you’re unhappy with the album, atleast give it a nother listen..
this shit is exactly what i was waiting for..can NOT WAIT for Relapse 2
in the review it says its rare Em uses the same flow and style on each track..was that a joke? hes rapping in the same style and high pitched menacing style in nearly every track..his psycho rage voice..i now understand why its called relapse, so i guess he gets a 10 in keeping with the theme…but this album is shit..all this hype, all the interviews about how hes been in the lab with Dre dropping sick ass beats one after another that hes dropping a relapse 2, as to say he has so many tracks…i think of it like this, obviously money isnt an issue with these 2 juggernauts, so if he says they made close to 70 to 120 tracks, SO much that hes dropping 2 joints this year, these are the best 15 hes found fit for his first album in 5 years???? eminem is king, he is dope as hell, through and through…and comparatively speaking, as in compared to himself and his other works…this album is garbage..please redeem your status come Relapse 2!!!!
i would bump lyrics up to 9.5 or 10 and overall rating to 9
Dude is from New Zealand where no black people live so I know he aint some wigger who’s a product of his environment influenced by an urban setting. He truly loves hip-hop music with no strings attached, so when he says an album sucks I take it to heart cuz he aint a dickrider. Just a real cat who likes to hear good music in his honda coupe.
Em’s album is garbage. Shit aint cool no more and it really is a maturity thing. I don’t care about poppin pills and killin people no more cuz I aint no 19 year waste. His word-play is amazing but his content is fuckin lame. Shit isn’t relevant no more. Prescription pills got replaced by meth in the larger public eyes. If you still doin oxy’s, OC’s 80’s you so 2004. Nigga is time to grow up or die. Shit aint cute no more. Put a suit and tie on and get to work!
Em failed with this one bruh! I know half these cats don’t know what addiction is. You don’t ever quit; you take a break, but when its in you forget about it. You stuck for life, just a matter of time.
Wtf is wrong with talkin about money, girls and cars?! You could make that argument if you was common or some underground cat, but Eminem doesn’t get that pass when talkin about murder, decapitation and rape. Lmao oh yeh that’s positive and real pure.
Some of you cats need to get your GED and do somethin with yourselves. Epic failure.
What’s worse is you dudes sayin “classic”?!
Smh classic changes culture of hip-hop, this collects dust and will be forgotten by september. There’s only like 30 classic albums out there that’s a must have. This isn’t one.
Em’s first three albums were objectively awesome, Encore and this are objectively half-assed crap
the last great album i heard was like Graduation
BUT (Marquis) u gotta remember its a lotta young cats who dnt get it so murderin and skitzo-talk will sell bcuz as long as they favorite artist still rappin it, its gon get backed up, but tha year is early theres hope for more albums yet, I won’t say RELAPSE is trash but I aint wit tha lets call it “classic” just bcuz he been gone for 5yrs…
and since aint no one else said it when will tha article be posted so all tha haters can back up what they was saying about Em selling 2 million if Wayne could sell 1mill first week wit his CRAP CARTER 3, and all that it wnt even be close sh**, bcuz I’m bored and I know tha excuses will be tha best to read…now I aint doubting but heaven forbid he dnt crack a mil all them 200-300 comments would’ve been for nothing lol
2 fingers
The album begins with a very thematic skit called Dr. West. It begins ever so cleverly with Eminem getting ready to be discharged from rehab. The only awkward thing is…he seems more aware what he has to do to stay on the right track than the doctor does. Saying things like “take a drink to take the edge off” and what not are the complete opposite commands of advice that would help Em stay clean. By the end of the skit, it’s revealed that this might just be Eminem’s downfall in front of his face. Who’s to say if it was the actual doctor or just some inner torment type ish…either way, it made for a great dramatic introduction to the album.
We move onto the horror-core, psychopathic sound sight that is “3AM”. The song has superb production and a classic style flow (that may be knew to some new Eminem listeners) of his psychopathic alter-ego as he tells the story of his adventure in rehab land on an late night/early morning killing spree hopped up on a pill cocktail, “feeling himself” to reruns of Miley Cyrus’s alter ego television series. This was a song that I first heard when it was released that I thought was quite sub par. It definitely grew on me as I see how Eminem begins to put together a project that is sonically equivalent to a motion picture.

So what its not a groundbreaking classic .Its em having fun on the mic and i think that is what all artists are should resort to .Yeah the content is dark and gross at times but what can you really expect from mr slim shey plus the album is obviously presented as one big Rx of drugs.Just like jokesta said its a concept album.Which I think was pulled of almost perfectly.I like all the politically conscious hiphop plus the positive shit but this album made me laugh my fuckin ass off at some points and had me speechless at other times.Isnt that what a good album is supposed to do???Good music sparks emotions and thoughts. After certain lines I found myself drifting off and thinking of certain scenarios at times which to me is a sign of some “GOOD SHIT”.This album was refreshing and a reminder to make sure i put away 15 dollars when i get payed friday to cop blakout2 because this year is turning out to be one hell of a year for hiphop releases.
And Marquis sade i agree with you on one thing .Addiction never stops Sometimes us addicts just go and get a new high which turns from snorting and smoking dope to being addicted to our families mixed with a little music homie.
9.5? thats such biased bullshit.
P.s. The album officially dropped yesterday, you can’t have any final statements on the subject till its atleast been circulated officially for a month. First week sales still will be a milli tho. Believe that!
I’m 200th!!!
PuffySwag
This is one of the greatest albums in the past 5 years and fuck a nigga who say cam ron killin him.
The only complaint I have about this album review is:
" fans were awaiting something more than random killings, rapes, and drug use."
- honestly? do you know who’s album you bought? its called relapse for fucks sake. Eminem’s expertise is nothing but shock through rapes, killings, drug use, and the occasional Chris Reeves joke…
so other than that good review, great album, and a good look for em. cant wait for the next one.
Pine County Cartel out.
2 fingers…Itried to not go past tha 90’s since ppl act like tha 80’s wasnt tha best yrs for HipHop bcuz everyone wasnt talking bout dguns, selling, killing, or cussing every 3 words but tha albums I named still go hard
The album has a real demonic feel to it though(most of them do)
But at times this sounds like a secret tribute to the bophomet (sercet society, illuminati) My Darling a prime example, along with a few others.
Sometimes I wonder how serious these rappers are with there sneak shout-outs. Like when Jay said “in my inner circle all we do is ball / till we all got Triangles on our walls”???
Sorry of getting off subject but that what all this reminds me of!
I got a song on there
THIS IS SOME REAL HIP HOP!!!
