[Editorial] Def Sounds Going Abroad?

by Mr. Green Wings on February 18th, 2010

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/182/260/32331/asset.jpegWhen you think Hip Hop (in terms of location), the first thing that comes to the minds of most is South Bronx where it started. Others would probably disagree and say that the West Coast is where Hip Hop got its gangsta image, and still others will say that the South and the Midwest (who are the future of hip hop, like it or not), but few have considered anything other places besides America…and if you don’t know now you know.

The European Hip Hop scene has been around almost as long as the existence of Hip Hop; they’ve gone through their trial-and-error era, and nowadays are cranking out a lot of good acts, especially production-wise. Examples are Dutch producer Nicolay and rapper Roots Manuva (featured below). And because of the diversity of Europe and their open-minded approach to music, I see European Hip Hop definitely getting more attention down the road.

When talking about the Asian Hip Hop scene, you might crack a laugh or two (or nine) because you’re thinking “Oh shit, Bruce Lee/Jackie Chan/Ninja/Samurai Rap LMAO!” If you seriously believe all the stereotypes about Asians (notice that I said all), it’s best for you to stop reading this NOW. As for the other people who actually have a functioning brain, because of the language barriers most people in the Western world won’t listen to music put out by Asian artists which is understandable. But again like Europe, DJing/production allows Asia a foot in the door of Hip Hop. And if you didn’t know: they can dance, too. Check the two videos below for a slice of the culture:

As for other countries and their take on hip hop I cannot cover due to how much I can put in this article. But they too, have their interpretation in their own respective cultures. In closing remember this: there is a world outside of America (I know, I lived overseas for three years straight). The Internet is on a global scale, so why not us?

sounds cool just make it seperate sections.
Like a page for US hip hop
a page for UK hip hop
and a page for any other hip hop
I think defsounds should expand its sound to RNB and other forms of music. Defsounds is all hip hop and this is getting boring

I don’t know how to post blogs on this site, but ya’ll should check out the Canadian Hip hop scene… Kardinal has somewhat blown up lately, but check out Shad and more of Ka’naan… Shad is doing big things. I’ll link a youtube vid of his, ya’ll can trash, but I don’t care. I want to get his name out there and expose good hip hop.

Ka’naan killed his verse on Wale’s album as well, one of the best songs on the disc if ya ask me.

Shad – The old prince stills lives at home

DS should definitely go abroad!! London, canada, africa, japan, all have a old school respect for hip hop culture that the spoiled assholes of the U.S have lost. If you travel to Africa as an unknown rap group from the U.S and do a show, the people over there will cheer and worship you like JayZ! A lot of the dope boy, shoot em up kill nonsense that passes over here as art gets dissed in places like africa and canada. They are actually into beats, rhymes, and good stage shows. They have a deeper understanding of the roots of hip hop than we do, and unlike all of the fake fans, they RUSH to purchase cd’s from their favorite artist rather than downloading shit. You see the way we prey for an artist downfall, and call our rap legends ‘old’ in the states? Go to london with KRS one and watch him receive the royal treatment that he deserves from a foreign audience! Go Global DS! I bet you would get way more intelligent, hip hop conversation and debate from the rest of the world than you get at home with a bunch of e-thugs.

yea thats what i noticed about them…they like the true hip hop and dont really care for all that bubble gum crap we have here

People here can call artists like KRS-One irrelevent but in reality he got way more respect form ppl all over the world compared to alotta rappers today
