[Editorial] Def Sounds Going Abroad?
by on February 18th, 2010
When you think Hip Hop (in terms of location), the first thing that comes to the minds of most is South Bronx where it started. Others would probably disagree and say that the West Coast is where Hip Hop got its gangsta image, and still others will say that the South and the Midwest (who are the future of hip hop, like it or not), but few have considered anything other places besides America…and if you don’t know now you know.
The European Hip Hop scene has been around almost as long as the existence of Hip Hop; they’ve gone through their trial-and-error era, and nowadays are cranking out a lot of good acts, especially production-wise. Examples are Dutch producer Nicolay and rapper Roots Manuva (featured below). And because of the diversity of Europe and their open-minded approach to music, I see European Hip Hop definitely getting more attention down the road.
When talking about the Asian Hip Hop scene, you might crack a laugh or two (or nine) because you’re thinking “Oh shit, Bruce Lee/Jackie Chan/Ninja/Samurai Rap LMAO!” If you seriously believe all the stereotypes about Asians (notice that I said all), it’s best for you to stop reading this NOW. As for the other people who actually have a functioning brain, because of the language barriers most people in the Western world won’t listen to music put out by Asian artists which is understandable. But again like Europe, DJing/production allows Asia a foot in the door of Hip Hop. And if you didn’t know: they can dance, too. Check the two videos below for a slice of the culture:
As for other countries and their take on hip hop I cannot cover due to how much I can put in this article. But they too, have their interpretation in their own respective cultures. In closing remember this: there is a world outside of America (I know, I lived overseas for three years straight). The Internet is on a global scale, so why not us?

you sound like a faggot
Like a page for US hip hop
