Death Of Auto-Tune? Not So Fast Says Creator

by Jokesta on June 23rd, 2009

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/1967/2021/24224/asset.jpegHip Hop power player Jay-Z has no doubt garnered the attention of the entire Hip Hop industry with his latest release, Death Of Auto-Tune a.k.a. D.O.A.

The track, which was released earlier this month, sparked many debates and has prompted even more responses.

From Jamie Foxx to T-Pain, nearly everyone has had a say in the matter--even the creator of the software himself, Andy Hildebrand.

In a recent interview with The National Post, Hildebrand says Auto-Tune isn't going anywhere.

"Artists come and go, but the Auto-Tune vocal is forever," says 62-year-old Hildebrand, a former Exxon executive who developed his pitch correction software while working on an oil rig and testing underwater echoes for the presence of oil.

"I haven't heard the Jay-Z song, but he's a smart guy. I'm sure he knows Auto-Tune would be almost impossible to kill."

Hildebrand put the software on the market in 1997 and says that within two years, 90% of the music industry was utilizing it.

It was even featured on early 2Pac and Blackstreet records, however it wasn't until Akon released Trouble in 2004 that misused Auto-Tune revolutionized R&B.

A year later, Akon discovered T-Pain, whose use of Auto-Tune has changed mainstream music as we once knew it.

Hildebrand says Auto-Tune will keep swinging because today's singers just can't hit the notes anymore.

Death Of Auto-Tune is the first street single off Jay-Z's Blue Print 3 which will be in stores on September 11th, 2009.

i dont think auto-tune will be forever
its just a matter of time before artists will get tired of it
and eventually move on
like Jay said, its not a trend anymore,
its become a gimmick
personally when T-Pain first came out and made it popular i thought it was cool
now im just tired of it cuz everyone seems to be using it
its become over saturated, we need to move away from that shit

I think he’s talking about the fact that a lot of artists use it to correct their pitch even though they may not overdue it to purposely distress their voice like T-Pain. A lot of people use it but it just isn’t noticeable and it isn’t just the hip hop community, anything that requires singing it can be used. But Jay was talking about the distress of auto-tune and i think that for the most part it will die off except a few people that sound better with it and can use it right.

People need to realize that autotune will never die- it came out decades before tpain. From pop, to techno, r&b, reggae, reggaton and even compa(creole. I doubt autotune will ever die

hahahahahaha, the first dude to stand up to Jay is a 64 y/o white guy!!!

like he said the AutoTune is here to stay…
it was here before a lot of these “singers”…
and it’s gonna be here long afterwards.

Jay’s got a lot of nerve thinkin he’s gonna kill the auto-tune single handedly.

when i said i think it wont last forever,
i was talking about in hip hop,
where a lot of rappers are using it.
i think it will eventually die out

autotune to me is mad annoying— except like t pain and akon who are “orginal” with it.. but jay-z sayin death of autotune means absolutely nothin.. jay-z does not run hip hop— and im pretty sure no one cares what he says about it.. if they make a hot song or its gonna make them money they are usin it.. jay-z aint puttin money in everyone elses pockets.. so in my opinion jay-z is a little hyped off himself..

so it was somehow used on early pac records when the software didnt even hit the market until a year after he died…..this site has way too many dumb motherfuckers writing for it….

the device used on the pac records, was a motherfucking vocoder…look it up, you ignorant ignorant people

Are you fucking retarded? 2pac’s music stopped being released and post-produced after his death? Reading comprehension is a bitch.

People are retarded. Only people that disagree with Jay are fags that use the shit wrong or Jay haters. When he says “Death of Autotune” he doesn’t mean it is no longer going to exist. Jay meant that it needs to stop being used wrong in hip-hop. People are only doing it because its cool now. It’s a decent tool if used properly however, people like Wayne overdo the shit and make it sound absolutely RETARDED!

Is it that hard to understand what he meant by this song? If you don’t get it, go listen to those simple ass rappers, thats the only music you will ever understand the meaning behind. I swear, some people should not be able to voice their opinions just because their opinions are completely retarded…

Look at all the retards sayin shit like “Who the fuck is he to say its dead?” Get out of here with that retarded nonsense…

I agree with the point of the song, but you can’t do what Jay-Z did and back-pedal and say it’s ok as long as only your friends like Kanye do it. That’s like the CIA importing mad drugs into this country and then putting people in jail for selling them or doing the same thing.

Auto-tune is for people with no talent to try and make something that vocally sounds pleasing to the ear. How else do you think old-ass Cher got play on the radio and in the club scene in the late 90s?

We’ve seen this before, the Jay-Z formula: jump on the next trend as soon as it begins to gain popularity, act like the spokesman for it and then hate on it the minute you hear dissidence from the public to sound like a leader. I would respect Jay if he hated auto-tune from the beginning or if he just flat out said it was lame without the exceptions of the people he supports. I swear he sounds like a true Republican, maybe the song he did with Nas was truthful.

I’M NOT SAYING HE HASN’T PUT OUT GOOD MUSIC IN HIS CAREER, but lately he’s been reduced to just a trend-jumper that pretends to have an independent view of things. In reality Jay would dress up like a woman if that was the new trend making the most money in hip-hop business, you just have to respect him for what he is which is an excellent marketer and business man.

As for the song, the first verse is dope (“This will offend my political connects”). The rest is just modern Jay, rambling and making little sense with maybe one or two nice rhymes to save face. Throw a few ad-libs saying “Hova” or something about his money and businesses and you have another turd that the sheeple eat right up. Until it gets lame after a month and he has to come out with a new record to conform the the newest trend that he will later speak out against. WHAT A LIVING LEGEND!

People need to start listening with an objective ear instead of liking the music for who raps on it, then maybe the radio would have something that I could listen to. Just cause Jay, 50, Beyonce, Kanye, Wayne, or any other household name comes out with a song doesn’t mean that it’s good music. If it was good music it wouldn’t have to be played two or three times every hour to catch on like most of Jay-Z’s music. If people knew anything about psychology and the fact that the more familiar something is to us then the more we like it, we’d have better music and more of a variety on the airwaves instead of the same 10 fuckin songs over and over and over and over and over. This is why record companies pay radio stations for so many spins per week, so they can exploit this clinically researched phenomenon. But whatever, this site is called Defsounds so Jay probably owns this site too. I’m pretty much talkin to a wall with this point of view.

that jay z song wasnt powerful enuff to stop auto tunes he should have made fun of it on the track by rapping in it with a few bars then he should have spit some bars after it with out it showing everybody just how dumb it sounded, but thats not really his stlye that somthing slim shady would do

Auto is gonna keep swinging because singers can’t hit the notes anymore. That sounds like he sayin people can’t sing. Guess that’s why t-pain got a career in music. Damn shame that this bullshit trend lets people in r&b that can’t sing, when a good singin voice is the best weapon a singer has.

Just think… of the top 100 economic entities in the world (countries & corporations) 51 of those are corporations and 49 are countries (as of 2000). Exxon brings the heat at #26 and being a former exec. means you got that island buying money.

This guys got a point but its Jay-Z.. he’s the only one who could stand up and say enough with this bullshit.. Sure, it’ll always get used but that’s cause the music industry will never die out in any aspect, I also think his point is aimed more towards the ringtone rap and shit.. People will always be creating music and sounds, whether its with a big white tall styro-foam cup and a voice box, or a straight freestyle off the top.. I’m sure Jay-Z is a fan of some autotune work, but its also gotta be demoralizing when you rhyme your ass off for a decade goin’ in on almost everything, and some idiots make a nice cut from using autotune..

Idk, just my thoughts

Then why did it take Jigga man so long to voice his opinion?? He shoulda dropped that record after week one of that shit taking over the radio. Just as everyone starts saying enough is enough he FINALLY speaks up. God knows if all the fans were still jockin it he wouldnt of opened his mouth. Shit seems bandwagon to me.

think of how much influence jay z’s already made tho
just from one song hes affected the whole music industry
if he got a few other guys like kanye or someone else from rocafella to spit a few verses on the song then it would be something humongous and then he prolly would be able to eventually kill autotune in the hip hop community

I mean people just bite and abuse trends in hip hop like the little whistling sound Dr. Dre used in his beats and from 94 to 99 everybody tried to sound like Pac( They even cut all their hair off and tied bandanas around their heads and tatooed crosses on their back) And remembber when everybody tried to tung twist like Bone Thugs it’s just a trend !

speakin of jamie foxx, anyone remember his 1st stand-up comedy special? at the end he was singin while playin the piano and he KILLED it! why doesn’t the industry want us to hear that jamie??

its not going die off competently. “Hildebrand put the software on the market in 1997 and says that within two years, 90% of the music industry was utilizing it.” then it faded away and came back when Akon released Trouble in 2004. T-Pain came in the game using it. now it blow up and its about time for it 2 go back where it came from. jus like niggas in the street dressin like its the 80’s again. Everything full circle. So if Jay-Z say the shit is dead then the shit is dead. but if u ask me i only think T-Pain sounds good with the shit.

I think what Jay-Z was trying to say that the autotune is ruining hip-hop not really R&B or any other genre. Too many rappers are starting to think that they can sing due to this. Like Jay said, they T-Paining too much! So he’s trying to kill it from the Hip-Hop standpoint and bring hip-hop back to what it really is.

he means autotune will never die because its basic pitch correction properties means that it’s used even on singers who sound “normal.” akon/t-pain/lil wayne are not actually using the software for its original purpose. so the way they use it may die. but the rest of the music world will keep using it.
