After a two year hiatus from the game, where he had to take care of his mother, a highly publicized beef with Hip Hop heavyweight 50 Cent, and the abrupt split between his Dipset brethren Juelz Santana, and Jim Jones, Cam'ron popped up just as abruptly as he disappeared. But being away from the game this long can do some things to an artist, you can lose a lyrical step or two, get lost in the past and find it difficult to adapt to the new styles in the game or very often the fans just forget about you. Cam'ron had no such problem. After a mixtape that had over 25 songs, he returned to the game with two stand out singles I Used To Get It In Ohio as well as Cookies and Some Apple Juice. "Crime Pays" has the opportunity to bring him back to his glory day's with Def Jam.

Lyrics 7.0 -

No one will remember Cam'ron, at least not this Cam'ron for his overpowering lyrical skills, but despite what some people may think, Cam is not a novice with the pen as he still shows the ability to cram out a good line or two. Lyrically he is not as flashy as say the "Confessions Of Fire" Cam'ron, but the multi-syllables and catchy wordplay that is offered on "Crime Pays" is something that can be considered a little higher than reasonable. He loses a couple of points with the flow as it stays the same, almost exactly the same on every song, and becomes painfully predictable. There is little to no change of pace in a song; something that a young Cam'ron could do with ease. But taking him for what he is and what he does now, this is not too bad to work with.

Production 6.5 -

The production on this album as a double edged sword. By no means was it horrible, there are actually a couple of really enjoyable beats on this album. The problem is that you could tell that they were low budget. Much of the production is the kind that you would expect on a mixtape. The format for most of the beats were repetitive, having the same ring of heavy synth and at times failed attempts to make catchy beat patterns. The production shines the brightest during Cookies and Some Apple Juice, I Used to Get it in Ohio, "Grove Me", and the totally unnecessary Chalupa. The Production is nothing to run home bragging to your friends about, but with an independent budget, which usually equates to independent producers, Cam got a bang for his buck.

Songs 6 -

Cam had the opportunity to address several topics on this album, and for whatever reason he chose not to do so. While this was his own personal decision, it takes away from what the album could have been song wise. Cam'ron is what he is, and for those who expect more, the song selection on here will disappoint them once again. Cam'ron does not do much to add diversity to this album, sticking to the topics that he knows best and putting together songs that sometimes had a point, while on other occasions left you wondering why didn't he just leave it for the mixtape? There are way to many skits on this album, but he does get points for at least having a really funny one in there. The content for lack of better words is insufficient, and there are at least five songs as I stated earlier that he should have let die in the mixtape scene. If you're looking for a good laugh or a song to ride out with in the car he definitely has three or four solid tracks to hang with.

Conclusion 6.5-

Don't call it a comeback, because he never retired, but if this is what Cam has in store for us during the remainder of his career, I would much rather pop in my "Purple Haze" album. "Crime Pays" is a decent album with decent tracks. He gives fans what they have long been waiting for (an album), but in all honesty, I as a fan would have much rather waited an extra year and hear him on a major label with major production and more time put into the songs on the album. If this were a mixtape it would be a pretty solid one with a lot of great tracks to bang to, but for an album its just a little above the curve but not quite good enough.

Shit i ain’t even a Cam fan but Crime Pays is fucking dope…6.5 on production are you fucking kidding me the beats KNOCK

I usually respect your views on album reviews LyricalThought but damn when you compare this rating to other albums u’ve rated, this shit is just wrong

I agree with the points you made, but I do not understand you’re rating system. Are you giving ratings which reflect how the album compares to other albums or do the ratings reflect how the album compares to how good the album should have been? It seems that you are penalizing killa for being a good artist…

as a fan of cam i realize that his status on a independent label is really hurting his potential. when paired with quality producers like the heatmakerz, kanye, just blaze – cam showed the ability to make some great tracks but you stick him with skitzo & aarabmuzik and you get mediocre cam – not that theyre bad producers but theyre not good enough to produce a whole album by themselves

the album was alright, but the too many of the tracks were either hit or miss. my favorite joint has to be Curve tho

ya I agree, Rick Ross does have lyrical skill in terms of word play and the amount of rhyming syllables in his bars. Its the content in those lyrics paired with his past that make people not like him. Personally, I think most of his songs sound the same, thats why I dont bump him in the whip, only the few songs that stand out ever make it into rotation in my playlists/cds.

“This is the same fool that thinks Beanie Sigel is better than Wayne.”
-———————————————————————————————————

When you grow up and are able to grasp all aspects of Beanie’s SUBSTANCE in his lyrics you, too, will see that he is much better than Wayne. Go listen to The B. Coming, and I mean really listen. Then try tellin’ me Wayne puts out better albums than that one.

Oh, and Wayne used to be one of my favorite rappers. His music was in my cd player more than any other artist by far a few years ago, so the “you a Wayne hater,” line is out.

Again, Beanie Sigel is a much better artist than Wayne.

I don’t think Cam’Ron should ever have his name brought up with Fabolous, or Cassidy. Lyrically, he doesn’t spit like them; metaphorically, he can’t compete; and just all around artistry, he doesn’t make the cut. “Albums are not for true fans, its for commerical use and to get money. Cam made this album for true fans.” This just goes over my head, maybe did you didn’t think it out properly, or you just write whatever stupid thought comes into your mind. Let’s do a little something with this and make you feel stupid. Cam’Rons’ album “Crime Pays” is just that a album correct? We both agree so far? It was pushed as an album, and his label marks it an album. So are you sayin’ Cams true fans are commercialized idiots, who know nothing about rap? And his true intention in putting this album out was for money? Hah.. See how words are funny? That’s what happens when you put down every sentence you think about on paper… Anyway, back to the album. I never was a huge fan of Cam, he doesn’t really surprise me when it comes to lyrics. But I would give this album about a 7.. Nothing more, but I can understand why you guys gave it a 6.5.. But like Jim Jones said, “how do you know crime pays, when you never did one in ya life?” haha..

it was consistent..not too many skips and no record felt like a filler..the production was crisp, and Cam was back on his shit..gritty lyrics with hilarious punchlines to match..“Deep throat ya moms, call it lolligag”…I like it more than Relapse..slighty better than Ross’ shit…

If he got all the same popular producers that every other major label artist got he would sound like everybody else it is because of Cam’s unique production that he has that dipset sound and i wouldnt consider Skitzo a low budget producer im mean he did put out that banger get em girls on purple haze and the beats are banging i admit he could of kept chulpa that shit is garabage but everything else ranges from decent to hot.

Shit should have been a 0. This is by far the worst production cam has ever had. Even Jadakiss’s album had better production than this. Usually Ppl would look over his Shit lyrics and notice the hard beat. Not this album though. Sounds like he picked through the local neighborhood djs beats.

I cant really speak on Crime pays as an album since I never bought it, nor downloaded it. His singles didnt catch me enough. This is comming from someone who feels purple haze the album is one of the best rap cds ever made. I didnt skip a track on that cd, its a classic in my eyes, maybe to someone else its no where near classic, its an opinion. anyway, based on the singles which had decent lyrical skill involved, but I deff wasnt feeling the production and a song/cd with not enough lyrical skill that has crappy production (imo since thats what music is based off of, ppl need to remember that, cant stress it enough) is a song/cd I will not even bother downloading. Like someone said above, being independant is hurtin Camron, lack of juelz on his tracks is also hurting him in my eyes. I really miss the dipset movement in its glory days but no use dwelling in the past, I just hope he was serious when he said maybe in 2010 there could possibly be a dipset reunion type mixtape/album.

lets jus say if i were Juelz or Jenny or any other ex-dipset member, i would feel like a douche for not being a part of this project. i think if juelz had a couple verses on summa them songs they woulda been hotter. while jennys album flops an juelz is silent, Cams takes a break an jus comes outta nowhere an takes the game by surprise while Jenny an Juelz be trynna get all these wack “byrd gang” “Skull Gang” groups to catch a buzz. Cam jus did what these guys been trynna do for a couple years now in what? 2-3 months? an put out an album within that time not no mixtape series or a buncha random ass mixtapes, but a real retail, get that shit at your local best buy, ALBUM. Thats y i dont get why artists complain about record companies not puttin they shit out. if you really cared about your fans, music, an hip-hop instead of the money, hoes, cars an clothes. Aint no one gunna stop you from puttin out material its your fault cuz your too caught up with the money an you dont give a shit about music. Independent artist drop albums all the time, major artists jus feel their downgrading themselves by going independent when in reality it would help them tremendously. I mean what would u rather do? Be able to walk around an say “Yeah im on aftermath, interscope, etc” then the next question is “well when you droppin an album” an we always get a date then we get these bullshit “Pushbacks” for months or it never even drops. If your an artist that makes quality music an have a strong fanbase no matter the size or widespread you will have success on any kind of recored label, as long as you put out material people will listen and buy. Sure you won’t live in a $22 milli house in Miami, but you sure as hell will be better off than most people in this world.

i was one of the original writers on this website..and used to be one of the most active members….but just like the streets its just too much hating….u can’t honestly say this album is garbage…to me its at least a 8, the production is good, the concept is good, and people say Camron dont have lyrics….but yet they boast eminem and lil wayne lyrics who dont even talk about anything….ESPECIALLY EMINEM……if people would just listen to music and comment this website would so much better….but shotouts to the maker of the website cus he tries!

your sayin eminem doesnt say anything in his raps?? are you fuckin kidding me? you must not even listen to the shit. Sure he’s got his songs were he jus goes wild and sometimes doesnt really say much but when eminem gets deep, hes one of the most insightful if not the most insightful dudes in the game. Listen to De Jha Vu and Beautiful on relapse an tell me that you cant get any kind of message out of those songs. And those are jus 2 examples from 1 album.

WTF does camron rap about??? Money, Cars, Clothes, Hoes, Cocaine, flippin bricks an ounces, how much he spends on jewels. so how can you even compare the 2 at all. atleast Em’s got versatility and raps about real life shit. i mean dont get me wrong cam appeals to me cuz i’ve been there an done what he raps about an ive done my time an been down that road so thats y i like cam’s music cause i can relate to it. Isnt that why anyone listens to music or likes a specific song more than any other?

im jus sayin lyrically you cant even compare the two and to even go as far as sayin Cam is better id like u to give me one example of camron not rapping about what i said above.

My nicca u are misunderstanding what im saying….no rapper really raps about anything..what im saying is rapping about shit thats believable…eminem is on the same level as ludacris…more comical, i take them as a comedian..not serious….camron rap about shit i relate to…clothes, cars, women, streets and all that..i grew up loving, wanting those things…thats just me…eminem raps about kililng and fighting …he cant whoop nobody i know..that nicca is a clown…im not saying Cam a drug kingpin, but he rap about shit i been thru…eminem says a bunch of bs to me

Rascal, you dont know shit bout shit really:

you said “Em’s got versatility and raps about real life shit.”

word? Em talks bout real life shit huh? what the fuck you been listening to, and if your life is like Relapse than your a fuckin psycho and a homosexual.

you said “And those are jus 2 examples from 1 album.”

your right, 2 examples of Em talkin bout anything real on a 10+ song album, thats less than 20% of the time when he raps bout reality.

you said “id like u to give me one example of camron not rapping about what i said above.”

Harlem Streets, Girls, I Hate My Job, are just a few i can think of off top. Cam does sometimes stray off track sometimes, but not a lot.

im tired of all these defsounders tellin me they relate to Em, cause non of his shit you can relate too.

Might give this album a listen but I can’t fuckin stand this ‘no homo’ bullshit. Someone please explain to me what exactly stating ‘no homo’ even means, all I can understand is that the guy is clearly trying to prove a point that he isn’t gay, has anything to do with gays. lol really it just makes the hip hop community look like a bunch of gays.

I haven’t heard the album yet, but I’ve alwaysthought that a mixtape vibe added authenticity to an album.

Killa Season came off like a tape and it still bumps. I’ll bet the only beef I’ll have with Crime Pays will be the beats. I’ll post again when I finally hear the joint

Cam goes in wa too hard on this album, jus lettin everybody kno he can do it without the rest of the set, even tho i was lookin forward to seein some new hell rell and jr writer, got 40 on there, ( that track is bananas by the way) but wouldve been alot better without with a bit more features, even a-mafia culdve been on there, idk but i love the entire shit…Dont like the skits, they r trash, but in total

I give this album a 9.75

deeper than rap is wack cause ross is wack, lets get out the way, have u seen the lastest on ross ? i guess not…Dude wack, def jam bought albums to make his sells increase, fukk ross…Banks killed da C.O. , but we aint even here to talk about him, Its killaz day!

Prey IV Reign flopped majorly due to the beef and seperation from the rest of the click, jus like The MoB album…Dont get me wrong, I find them both hot, but as good as they culdve been if jim n cam hadnt went they seperate ways, and everybody knos this.

And kiss, well…kiss is hott regardless, i aint buy his album, but i have mad faith in kiss…fukk the album sales at the end of the day, if they fans support the music, thats all that matters,,,,fukk the money from mainstream, cause at the end of the day,
crime pays!
99 ways

and weezy, we all kno wayne gon sell regardless, lets stop talkin bout him, needa hear some new shit from wayne on that milli type rhyming flow, thats his hottest flow, fukk everything else, i wana hear rap, not pop..

Dipset!

i heard most of the album and i gotta say everything i heard was fire. Get it in Ohio was a banger. Silky, Cookies n Apple Juice, Caveman were the same dope Cam usually puts out. I liked Chalupa too. Bottom of the Pussy wasn’t a good track. Curve was aight, but nothin special. i didn’t hear one track i hated. a couple i haven’t heard, one was below average, and the rest were fire. how u gonna punish cam for being solid in the past? I liked his other albums better, especially Killa Season and Purple Haze better, but this one is still a good cd and i’ll play it before most of the other shit out there. i’ll def play it before hearin eminem rap bout fuckin mannequins, 50 rap bout the candy shop or whatever other lame bitch ass shit he rap bout, and before jim jones and his ridin cam’s coat tails shit(mr. me too). he better than juelz lately. jr writer is still the best one from dipset.

i read the Overrated Rappers editorial. if they had one for underrated rappers, jr writer would be real high on that last. him and joe budden got as good of flows as anybody out right now. if any of u can name a rapper wit better consitent flows than the two of them, i’d like to hear it.

Terrible review on the album. It has the exact same Cam flow Cam has had his whole career, just not AS many bangers as Purple Haze had, but at least he hasn’t changed, still rappin bout the same shit and same flow, which has always been unique and something I loved about Cam’Ron, his exotic taste. “Spend The Night” Alone makes the album a fuckin at least 8…

Crime Pays is straight luke warm. Couple cuts that remind you of Cam at his best. Not nearly a CD that you want to play entire joint. I cosign LIl Chris, old schoolers Red and Meth go way harder on the Blackout 2. A 6.5 is probably what this deserves. It puts Cam back on the scene but not stellar effort by far.
