Cam'ron: "Crime Pays" Review
by on May 12th, 2009
Album: Crime Pays
Cam'ron makes his anticipated return.
After a two year hiatus from the game, where he had to take care of his mother, a highly publicized beef with Hip Hop heavyweight 50 Cent, and the abrupt split between his Dipset brethren Juelz Santana, and Jim Jones, Cam'ron popped up just as abruptly as he disappeared. But being away from the game this long can do some things to an artist, you can lose a lyrical step or two, get lost in the past and find it difficult to adapt to the new styles in the game or very often the fans just forget about you. Cam'ron had no such problem. After a mixtape that had over 25 songs, he returned to the game with two stand out singles I Used To Get It In Ohio as well as Cookies and Some Apple Juice. "Crime Pays" has the opportunity to bring him back to his glory day's with Def Jam.
Lyrics 7.0 -
No one will remember Cam'ron, at least not this Cam'ron for his overpowering lyrical skills, but despite what some people may think, Cam is not a novice with the pen as he still shows the ability to cram out a good line or two. Lyrically he is not as flashy as say the "Confessions Of Fire" Cam'ron, but the multi-syllables and catchy wordplay that is offered on "Crime Pays" is something that can be considered a little higher than reasonable. He loses a couple of points with the flow as it stays the same, almost exactly the same on every song, and becomes painfully predictable. There is little to no change of pace in a song; something that a young Cam'ron could do with ease. But taking him for what he is and what he does now, this is not too bad to work with.
Production 6.5 -
The production on this album as a double edged sword. By no means was it horrible, there are actually a couple of really enjoyable beats on this album. The problem is that you could tell that they were low budget. Much of the production is the kind that you would expect on a mixtape. The format for most of the beats were repetitive, having the same ring of heavy synth and at times failed attempts to make catchy beat patterns. The production shines the brightest during Cookies and Some Apple Juice, I Used to Get it in Ohio, "Grove Me", and the totally unnecessary Chalupa. The Production is nothing to run home bragging to your friends about, but with an independent budget, which usually equates to independent producers, Cam got a bang for his buck.
Songs 6 -
Cam had the opportunity to address several topics on this album, and for whatever reason he chose not to do so. While this was his own personal decision, it takes away from what the album could have been song wise. Cam'ron is what he is, and for those who expect more, the song selection on here will disappoint them once again. Cam'ron does not do much to add diversity to this album, sticking to the topics that he knows best and putting together songs that sometimes had a point, while on other occasions left you wondering why didn't he just leave it for the mixtape? There are way to many skits on this album, but he does get points for at least having a really funny one in there. The content for lack of better words is insufficient, and there are at least five songs as I stated earlier that he should have let die in the mixtape scene. If you're looking for a good laugh or a song to ride out with in the car he definitely has three or four solid tracks to hang with.
Conclusion 6.5-
Don't call it a comeback, because he never retired, but if this is what Cam has in store for us during the remainder of his career, I would much rather pop in my "Purple Haze" album. "Crime Pays" is a decent album with decent tracks. He gives fans what they have long been waiting for (an album), but in all honesty, I as a fan would have much rather waited an extra year and hear him on a major label with major production and more time put into the songs on the album. If this were a mixtape it would be a pretty solid one with a lot of great tracks to bang to, but for an album its just a little above the curve but not quite good enough.

Hip hop dies 2005.
Hip Hop reincarnated 2009.
I’m going to take some predictions
Blackout2=8.0-8.5
Relapse=7.0-8.0
Shit i ain’t even a Cam fan but Crime Pays is fucking dope…6.5 on production are you fucking kidding me the beats KNOCK
I usually respect your views on album reviews LyricalThought but damn when you compare this rating to other albums u’ve rated, this shit is just wrong
relapse>crime pays
send camron back to the slums, lets hop on the eminem train instead and fuck manikins in the ass, shit id rather rap about fucking manikins than about cookies and some apple juice and chalupas and all his other corny shit, if eminem is corny with his topics, camron is just corny to the second power
~real talk
They gave Curtis a 8…
“milk milk, lemonade, round the corner fudge is made…”
are you fuckin serious? cam is a dope artist, i won’t take that away from him, but cookies wit some apple juice, easily worst song of the year so far.
EMINEM BE GOAT
i copped it and its not a classic, but its better than most shit out these days. its got some hot songs with not to many fillers so a 6.5 is a bit low
I agree w/ jersey , I should be at least a 7.5 . . .
Cam put in work on that ‘Get it in Ohio’ track.
@Omg Dweezay: If you got the time please explain what the fuckin deal is with buying “3 copies?” And you said, “that’s all they would let me buy,” as if you walked to the register with 17 of those bitches and had to put 14 back. Hey, I’m all about supporting your favorite artists, but that’s retarded.
the album was alright, but the too many of the tracks were either hit or miss. my favorite joint has to be Curve tho
_But no offense , these niggas on defsounds dont know how to fuckin rate an album !
Fuck that shit , THIS CD BANGS PERIOD !
Go support this nigga CAM . . Fuck the ratings!
relapse > crime pays
told you so
-———————————————————————————————————When you grow up and are able to grasp all aspects of Beanie’s SUBSTANCE in his lyrics you, too, will see that he is much better than Wayne. Go listen to The B. Coming, and I mean really listen. Then try tellin’ me Wayne puts out better albums than that one.
Oh, and Wayne used to be one of my favorite rappers. His music was in my cd player more than any other artist by far a few years ago, so the “you a Wayne hater,” line is out.
Again, Beanie Sigel is a much better artist than Wayne.
LOL
Here is a question, they gave Ross a 7.3 and Asher Roth a 8.3
Do people think that their albums are of better quality than this?
You just made an ignorant mistake while trying to clown someone for being ignorant.
“ALBUMS are not for true fans.”
“Cam made this ALBUM for true fans.”
Reading your comments makes it easier to understand why you’re hyping this ALBUM up to the max.
In now way was this better than Curtis.
Oh btw FUCK RICK ROLL’D that’s his new name because all he is, is a prank on hip hop.
“Get It Get It”
“Get It In Ohio”
“You Know What’s Up” (feat. C.O. & Sky-Lyn)
“My Job”
“Spend the Night”
Theres alot of tracks on this joint so i gotta listen to it again but these are the ones i remeber.
“It’s all about the lyrics.”
wayne back in the day? you prolly rite sayin weezy’s better….buut beans at anytime in his career vs wayne now? U alredy kno beanie’s got that bro…prolly shudnt be talkin bout 50 cent dick riders, if u doin the same thing with wayne? and “if” meaning if that is ur reeeal opinion on beans vs wayne
but i agree it deserves more than a 6 atleast 7.5 – 8
WTF does camron rap about??? Money, Cars, Clothes, Hoes, Cocaine, flippin bricks an ounces, how much he spends on jewels. so how can you even compare the 2 at all. atleast Em’s got versatility and raps about real life shit. i mean dont get me wrong cam appeals to me cuz i’ve been there an done what he raps about an ive done my time an been down that road so thats y i like cam’s music cause i can relate to it. Isnt that why anyone listens to music or likes a specific song more than any other?
im jus sayin lyrically you cant even compare the two and to even go as far as sayin Cam is better id like u to give me one example of camron not rapping about what i said above.
you said “Em’s got versatility and raps about real life shit.”
word? Em talks bout real life shit huh? what the fuck you been listening to, and if your life is like Relapse than your a fuckin psycho and a homosexual.
you said “And those are jus 2 examples from 1 album.”
your right, 2 examples of Em talkin bout anything real on a 10+ song album, thats less than 20% of the time when he raps bout reality.
you said “id like u to give me one example of camron not rapping about what i said above.”
Harlem Streets, Girls, I Hate My Job, are just a few i can think of off top. Cam does sometimes stray off track sometimes, but not a lot.
im tired of all these defsounders tellin me they relate to Em, cause non of his shit you can relate too.
eminem > camron
personally i think the Public Enemy #1 mix tape was better then this
Crime Pays,99 ways,9 gage,Ak-47’s, homey hit the highway.
Killa Season came off like a tape and it still bumps. I’ll bet the only beef I’ll have with Crime Pays will be the beats. I’ll post again when I finally hear the joint
Are you trying to tell me Crime Pays is better than Pray IV Reign, Deeper Than Rap, and The Last Kiss?
Sit in front of yo stereo a lil more son.
Crime Pays 99 Ways, AK 47 Homie Hit Da highway If U Hatin!
Dipset Bitch!
Classic album without the dips, still hard, I Love every track ’cept one! and every album has one of those,
Cam goes in wa too hard on this album, jus lettin everybody kno he can do it without the rest of the set, even tho i was lookin forward to seein some new hell rell and jr writer, got 40 on there, ( that track is bananas by the way) but wouldve been alot better without with a bit more features, even a-mafia culdve been on there, idk but i love the entire shit…Dont like the skits, they r trash, but in total
I give this album a 9.75
Dipset! Killa!
Fukk U Hataz, Suck a Dick Fukk Niggaz! (No Homo)
Curve..Ord Road 4 Life!
deeper than rap is wack cause ross is wack, lets get out the way, have u seen the lastest on ross ? i guess not…Dude wack, def jam bought albums to make his sells increase, fukk ross…Banks killed da C.O. , but we aint even here to talk about him, Its killaz day!
Prey IV Reign flopped majorly due to the beef and seperation from the rest of the click, jus like The MoB album…Dont get me wrong, I find them both hot, but as good as they culdve been if jim n cam hadnt went they seperate ways, and everybody knos this.
And kiss, well…kiss is hott regardless, i aint buy his album, but i have mad faith in kiss…fukk the album sales at the end of the day, if they fans support the music, thats all that matters,,,,fukk the money from mainstream, cause at the end of the day,
crime pays!
99 ways
and weezy, we all kno wayne gon sell regardless, lets stop talkin bout him, needa hear some new shit from wayne on that milli type rhyming flow, thats his hottest flow, fukk everything else, i wana hear rap, not pop..
Dipset!
Shady Aftermath,,,
AND I THINK CAM CAN RAP…
also, i should point out that people said ross’ album was too polished, and now you’re hating on killa’s for being too gritty. y’all don’t know what you want.
go cop crime pays and support independent music.
So far the best album out has been DOOM’s “Born Like This”
“the clothes, from italy, the coke, from Sicili, im talkin, Literally”
Plus, I’m stupid foul, pulled a coup to trial
I come through Canal, and let the luger style
